“Some immigrants come and believe they can function in isolation, refusing to adapt. I suggest they must assimilate. Adapt to the culture they wish to live in,” State Rep. Carla Cunningham argued. “All cultures are not equal.”

The African-American elected official took a stand for “The Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act” which enabled federal immigration law enforcement to arrest over 1,100 illegal alien criminals including MS-13 gang members, drug offenders and the killer of Amber Paris: a 15-year-old girl.

After her vote, Rep. Cunningham, who is black, was accused of racism, and of being a secret Republican, despite her longtime history as a Democrat elected official. Radical leftists showed up to hound her at a town hall meeting and accused her of wanting to deport all immigrants.

“I do not support illegal immigrants. I support legal immigrants. I have not voted for a bill to remove all immigrants,” she clarified. And later she was forced to apologize, but that wasn’t enough. The woke political machine set out to destroy this longtime black elected official.

And not just her.

State Rep. Nasif Majeed appeared in the woke crosshairs when he voted for the ‘Prevent Sexual Exploitation of Women and Minors’ bill, which woke Dems claimed was ‘transphobic’ because it allowed parents to opt their children out of explicit LGBTQ lessons in schools and mandated that students on overnight field trips should be housed with members of their own sex to avoid assaults.

Woke Democrats targeted the two black Democrats in primary ambushes, pouring money into the campaigns of Veleria Levy, an HIV ‘equity’ advocate and  pro-LGBTQ+ Rev. Rodney Sadler. The two woke candidates backed by sizable amounts of cash won their primaries, and now Rep. Cunningham and Rep. Majeed are leaving the North Carolina Democratic Party.

“I have been a Democrat all my life, but I came to realize that I want to serve the people; not a party. Being an independent thinker does not align with party politics, and I will never compromise the needs of my constituents to satisfy a political agenda,” Rep. Cunningham said.

“I’ve been a Democrat. But what they did during the campaign, they smeared my character, confused my voters. They raised over $1 million to get me defeated. I guess if you go against the status quo, it’s the stuff of consequence,” Rep. Majeed said in his statement.

Rep. Shelly Willingham, a black Democrat who had taken a stand for women’s sports, by voting for a bill that defended women from having to compete against men in dresses, was also ousted. No word on whether he intends to remain in the party that purged him.

Cunningham and Majeed’s departures raise the number of Democrat state representatives who have left the party over its culture war and woke crackdowns to three after Rep. Tricia Cotham, a former teacher, left a few years ago over pressure to support abortion until the moment of birth. Rep. Cotham had previously supported abortion, but she drew the line at some abortions.

And that was enough.

But Rep. Cotham was white. The purges of black elected officials whose views are entirely in step with the generally socially conservative black community in North Carolina is another matter especially when considering that those really behind the purges are not black.

Reps. Majeed and Cunningham were targeted by Unite Here, a radical union headed by Gwen Mills, a white leftist, and the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters headed by Carrie Clark, another white woman. Unite Here’s North Carolina political director, Aiden Graham, a white man, discussed the coordination to oust the black elected officials.

Gleefully taking credit for the purge of black elected officials was a white man: Dustin Ingalls (He/Him) of the Environmental Defense Fund’s action arm. “A lot of folks have tried to get Cunningham and Wray and Willingham, particularly, to hold the line on vetoes, and been burned, really, too many times,” he snipped. “We decided ultimately, enough was enough.”

Between them four woke groups spent over $1 million to purge black Democrats.

The woke purge has sent the message to black Democrats in North Carolina that they have to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to their values and their religion behind Dustin Ingalls.

Last year, Sabrina Berry, the 6th District Chair for the Democrats, dropped her old party, saying, “I didn’t leave the people, I left a party and a platform that no longer aligned with my values.”

“In the Democratic Party, I found that certain convictions had to be set aside. I could advocate for justice, but not on the foundation of my beliefs. I could speak on issues, but not from the perspective of my faith. Ultimately, I had to choose, and I chose to stand by my principles.”

In North Carolina and around the country, black Democrats are being forced to choose between their party and their faith. And growing numbers are putting faith over party.

And paying the price.

But the North Carolina Democratic Party’s decision to hollow out the party by putting illegal alien criminals, transgenderism and environmental special interests ahead of its black base may come with a heavier price.

In the 2024 election, despite a half-black woman on the ballot, exit polls showed that, “Trump’s share in North Carolina this year went down five percentage points among white voters and up five percentage points among black voters.” Black turnout overall declined from 68% in 2020 to 66% suggesting it’s not only black elected officials walking away from the Democrats.

Black voters are also beginning to put faith over party.
