Like the paper he works for, Thomas Friedman is a longstanding institution. People read the New York Times so they can repeat his slick glib nonsense at parties to people just as clueless, but slightly too busy to read his verbose ramblings in the paper for themselves.
But give Tom some credit, he was just a little too honest in this CNN interview.
Don’t want Iran to lose if it means Trump wins. @TomFriedman of @NYTimes really wants “to see Iran defeated militarily because this regime is a terrible regime for its people and the region,” but on CNN’s @Smerconish he fretted “the problem is I really don’t want to see Bibi… pic.twitter.com/rgPngGXkGc

“I really want to see Iran defeated militarily because this regime is a terrible regime for its people and the region. And nothing would improve the region more than the replacement of this regime with a regime that is focused on enabling its people to realize their full potential, and integrating peacefully with other countries, and stop occupying Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. So I’m all for that.”
On the other hand, Friedman is troubled because those whom he sees as the “wrong people” are leading the fight against Iran. “I really don’t want to see Bibi Netanyahu or Donald Trump politically strengthened by this war because they are two awful human beings.”
For that reason, he says, “I really find myself torn. I want to see Iran militarily defeated, but I do not want to see these two terrible people strengthened.”
This, mind you, is the ‘moderate’ liberal position on the war in Iran. The ‘extreme’ one is straightforwardly supporting Iran and wanting America to lose.
Here’s a sample.

Since the talks in “Islamisbad” have failed for Iran, the result will be a win for Trump and eventually a win for the Persian people and return of Shah Palavi and constitutional government. You don’t need a “Revolutionary Guard” if the “Revolution” is a desire of the people!
A win for the whole world with the ongoing threat of jihad! And the terrorist acts of genocide and unspeakable death and bombings.
Fried Man is an idiot! When the HATRED for a PRESIDENT and PM who have joined to rid the WORLD of the mullahocrazy cancer prevents you from acknowledging the EFFORTS of EVERYONE involved, you’re just a sick person! I’ve seen it many times that being a DEMOcrat is a mental condition – not sure if that’s true or if it’s having a mental condition just makes you a DEMOcrat!
1. Genesis of Iran’s Israel obsession AFTER it saw it as extension of “great satan” US. 2. As Ingraham concluded from NYT’s piece, Trump listens to all and makes HIS OWN decision. 3. Trump never changed stand against Islamic fascist republic of Iran’s nukes since 1990s.
Until reading this article I was better off never hearing of yet another self-loathing Jew Thomas Friedman. WTF does this fucktard want? If he was held prisoner in Iran he would beg and plead for President Trump to get him out.
It’s like people who want eternal life but don’t want to call on Yeshua Messiah Lord Jesus Christ to obtain that.
Hey, I was born 100% with Semitic/Hebrew/Jewish DNA – and I know the difference.
I am 100% zionist pro-Israel and 100% pro President Trump since the day he announced his bid in 2015! I told people Donald Trump will win the Presidency. I of course did not see the relentless attacks against him, the fake dossier, the sham impeachments, the Hell bitch Nasty Nutzie Nazzi PeeLousy rippping up the State of the Union as Speaker of the House, The bitch witch should have been arrested and expelled from CONgrASS.
I did not imagine the lawless lawfare and assassination attempts, the first one missing President Trump’s head by fraction of an inch! Don’t tell me YHVH G-D Almighty’s HAND is not on President Donald J. Trump –
President Trump is YHVH’S Man just as Moses is YHVH’S Man.. No two bit, sycophant self loathing Jew reporter on the deep state anti-American anti-MAGA pro-commie news rag NY Times has any credibility and is showing himself and his sins because he influences ilk like him to YHVH G-D ALMIGHTY. Repent ye assholes—just a friendly warning!!! Stop getting on your knees in line to suck satan’s ding-a-ling (Yes I know those spirits don’t have genitalia, it’s a figure of speech.)
I have a cockatoo who is a Biblical expert and scholar who advised me to qualify my statement.
Thomas Friedman has always been against Israel, at least since he was in college. Even a claim in his books that sounds positive, that Israel is a special country, was a trick to state that means it should not defend itself as any other nation would. Friedman’s preference that Iran should be defeated is not strong enough to overcome his hatred of President Trump. Imagine Freidman in a wartime foxhole hating another soldier so much that he could not serve on the same side in the face of an enemy attack.
Yes, Thomas Friedman is Jewish. Raised in a middle-class American Jewish family in Minnesota, he has described his upbringing as having strong Jewish roots, including attending Hebrew school and visiting Israel. He has referred to his faith as part of his cultural and communal root system and often addresses issues relating to Israel and Jewish identity in his work.
Upbringing: He attended Hebrew school five days a week until his Bar Mitzvah and spent summers in his youth on a kibbutz in Israel.
Education & Interest: He developed a strong interest in the Middle East after visiting Israel in 1968, later studying at Brandeis University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Identity: Friedman has stated that being Jewish is a significant part of his identity and anchors him in the world.
Journalism: As a New York Times columnist, he frequently analyzes Israeli policy, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the security of Israel, often describing himself as a supporter of a secure Jewish state.
Friedman typifies the average NYC Jew. I wonder how many of them voted for Mamdani……? Given how badly Mamdani has mucked things up thus far, they’ll never openly admit to voting for him.
Poor Tom, he’s mentally ill. Sad……
I think he’s borderline dangerously mentally ill. He’s menace to society and should be hog tied and muzzled and locked away in a dark and dank padded cell for the remainder of his miserable life.
Finding it beyond sad that these people hate Trump so much…..and for WHAT reason?
He won…..These small minded libs seem to not care about the nation….can they read? Do they not understand what the stakes are…..?
Hatred has made them sick in their minds….
Some people just love to hate. It’s what comforts them. That kind of hatred manifests in many different ways.
“I really find myself torn” Trump’s got shedloads of chutzpah and is getting the job done. Tearing yourself up over who’s doing it suggests that you are timid and may be suffering from aboulamania.
Unfortunately for Friedman, the politicians he approves of would only consider appeasing the Iranian regime, not defeat it militarily. He needs to join the real world and pick what side he’s on.
Fortescue said that the opposition had the right to criticize the national government, but only if that is in the national interest.
Friedman typifies not a “typical NYC Jew”, but a typical Brandeis graduate. I spent five years in one of their grammar schools in the early/mid 70s. Most of my teachers had original members of the actual Frankfurt School as graduate advisors. They were unpleasant and profoundly subversive. Parents finally banded together and demanded the instillation of a non-Brandeis grad principal and assistant principal. We ended up with a former USMC jr. officer who served in Korea and a former jr. officer in the IDF, respectively, in those roles. The school didn’t turn out any Tom Friedmans thereafter.
So then, Mr. Freidman, you would rather continue to see the Iranian people slaughtered by the thousands…..Due to a distaste for a sitting POTUS…
I get it….
You, Mr. Freidman, are a very bad, mentally damaged human being and I use that term HUMAN, with much liberty.
