Yesterday I had some figures from the NYC vs LA deathmatch over who can spend more on the homeless population. Los Angeles was looking pretty good with $650,000 per housing unit for the homeless, but don’t count NYC out yet.
These numbers come from the NY comptroller’s annual report via Mike Bird of the Economist.
New York City’s unsheltered population increased from 3,588 in FY 2019 to 4,504 in FY 2025 — a 26 percent increase from pre-pandemic levels
In that time, spending on services for this population has more than tripled, growing from $102 million in FY 2019 to nearly $368 million in FY 2025 (a 262 percent increase). Its share of spending has also increased, from just under 5 percent to nearly 9 percent of total DHS spending.
This part of the pattern is consistent. Spend more on a problem and you create more of it.
Homeless spending tripled and the homeless population rose 26%.
But let’s break down those numbers. Divide $368 million by 4,504 and you get $81,705 in spending her homeless person.
Obviously that’s not the actual amount being given to the homeless. That’s the money going to various agencies and contractors and the vast majority of it goes to various politically connected folks. If the issue were resources for poor people, you could just give a check to each bum. But the bums are mentally ill drug and alcohol addicts and the welfare state cultivates them to be able to cash in. And are they ever cashing in.
In January 2025, the City announced an additional $106 million in the annual baseline budget to open 900 additional Safe Haven beds, bringing the City’s total low-barrier bed capacity to 4,900 beds
And we’re not even in the full Mamdani.
My best advice is if you’re living in a major homeless city, is to get a second job. You’ll need it to pay for the homeless spending that’s buying mansions for some people in the homeless-industrial complex.

The money doesn’t go to the homeless, it goes to NGO’s who spend it on themselves and lobbying for more
Exactly. It’s a very profitable industry for the unethical and immoral. And it pays better than government work.
It would be simple to just round up the homeless and assign them to the nearest DEMOcrat! Given the speed in which Mammy is islamisizing NYC, that may very well be an idea already discussed!
There is no desire to reduce homelessness if it means losing a big salary payday all at the expense of the American taxpayer.
If New Dork Schitty spent $81,705.00 on every homeless derelict instead of fake programs and fake charities which funnel off all the funds, I would understand why they choose to be derelicts.
I see we have a lefty toll here who’s never spent a penny of her own money on the “homeless crisis.”
Get a job, bitch.
The real cost is probably more than that, but it’s a good example of why subsidized rent is the cheapest way to deal with homeless people.
Yes, that works. Paying off so called NGOs who collude with governments doesn’t. They just swindle all the funds with no results other than paying off their government comrades who made it possible.
Yeah, we’ve seen it all in the East Bay and elsewhere. Every single thing we tried failed except subsidized rent. One can do nothing and end up like India where the homeless live and defecate in the street, or try to do something. When the city tries to run a building the crack gangs take over and the city officials in charge do nothing except collect their salaries. No building repairs get done, etc.
It’s interesting what you wrote about crack gangs taking over properties. I haven’t dealt with that sort of crisis personally but I can tell you, after multiple legal consultations, that tenants can’t do shit about annoyances in their apartment buildings unless you actually apprehend somebody in the commission of a major crime, and beat the shit out of them. That was about what I figured before consulting lawyers. Retards making noise, roaming the hallways and even dealing meth from their apartments are untouchable legally.
It’s nice to know tenants have some personal rights in CA but we don’t have rights when it comes to our neighbors and the scumbags they bring in with them.
Of course, property owners are taxed up their asses so you’re fucked by this state no matter what.
I swear, only illegal aliens and other criminals benefit from CA law and government. The rest of us take it up the ass.
If they reduced their expenditures on homelessness to zero the rates would plummet.
Long story short: Politicians love to waste taxpayer money! If they had to spend their own money theis picture would be far different.
Think about the millions of dollars spent on Joe Bidens invaders housed in NYC still….
I dont really see an end to the homeless…. most are addicts and or mentally ill, what do you do to rehabilitate those illnesses and return them to productive society.
Maybe this is one issue that we should look at what caused these people to become homeless and work from that end of the issue with maybe more success preventing normally adjusted people from becoming homeless?
America and the world has become too expensive for most to survive in and those costs are increasing everyday… salaries and jobs are not keeping up and with A.I. that will kill even more jobs will only drive more out of their homes onto our streets.
If you have a job and a roof over your head dont give up, tighten your belts and hang on, this inflation spiral has to end sooner than later or else all of us will be homeless.
Well, Bob on the Knob,
prices went down precipitously after Trump was reelected and Heels Up Harris was rejected. Do you expect us to forget the four years of shit and Hell your comrades put us through?
Remember that 4000 number is just the beds the city have for homeless. The real homeless number in NYC is more like 25,000 or more. They live on the streets and in the subway. When deblassio shut down the subway during covid literally tens of thousands of homeless people came out the subway system and were all over the streets. There are some 300 subway stops but only around 70 are handicap accessible so those stops had hundreds of homeless living near them during covid..
NYC deserves exactly what it gets. It had idiot mayor Eric Adams filling expensive hotels with illegals while Americans slept on the streets and now it had Commie Momdani who is going to tax the city into oblivion. What a bunch of morons.
Don’t worry. Mamdani will fix it. LOL
Endless protracted wars. Welfare fraud. Homeless fraud. President Trump is making damn sure Iran is surgically destroyed of it’s current leaders and not a protracted war for war profiteers and money launderers.
Citizen Journalist young Nick Shirley outted the “learing centers” and thereby exposed the billions of dollars in fraud enabled by Minnesota governor and AG.
And we have the homeless fraud that DOGE needs to get their Ai asses moving on.
$81k per homeless in NYC? They should have gold leafed tents and transportation up to their door taking them to showers and fine dining and driving them in circles as they walk in circles all day long.
That’s our tax dollars and they have collected enough to afford the best defense attorneys.
So bring it on!

Iron law of economics: you get more of what you subsidize. Why don’t they just take the money, make a big pile of it in Market Street, and ignite it?
I would bet the $75,000 of that per person number goes into the pockets of those wanting their taxpayers to come back or at least into their campaign funds.
