Ex-Capitol Police Chief Claims No "Civilian Law Enforcement Agency" is Trained to Repel Riots
The former Capitol Police chief is picking yet another story to explain his force's complete incompetence during the Capitol Riot. Apparently, police forces are not capable of handling riots.
Only the military is.
Normally this should raise eyebrows, but we are in a post-fact, post-truth, and post-reality reality where making insane statements is no longer even noticeable.
"No single civilian law enforcement agency — and certainly not the USCP — is trained and equipped to repel, without significant military or other law enforcement assistance, an insurrection of thousands of armed, violent, and coordinated individuals focused on breaching a building at all costs," former Chief Steven Sund told senators.
Except for the part where the rioters were not armed with firearms, the conclusion people draw when hearing the word 'armed'. Some had makeshift weapons and mace. But thousands of people did not arrive with shields, mace, and blunt objects intent on breaking in. Only a small well-prepared group did that.
But never mind that.
Chief Sund is claiming that no civilian police force in the country is capable of handling thousands of rioters. Despite the fact that civilian police forces spent much of 2020 doing just that.
As I noted after the riot, "The Capitol Police have over 2,000 sworn officers. A police force dedicated to protecting Capitol Hill has more personnel in its service than the police forces of most of the country. Congress' private cops are the 19th largest police force in the country. It’s a larger force than the police forces of Atlanta, Baltimore, Denver, or Milwaukee with a massive $460 million budget."
Those forces dealt with massive Black Lives Matter riots that sprawled across entire neighborhoods. The Capitol Police boss, by contrast, is claiming that it's impossible for a force with 2,000 sworn officers to secure already heavily fortified buildings from rioters.
If that were true, maybe we ought to defund the police and just turn over the country to military rule.
That's the only reasonable conclusion to be drawn from Sund's insane claim.
