Democrats Applaud Congressman's Joke About Trump's Death

The Dems know how to give their base what it wants.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D., Fla.) joked on Sunday that it would be a "catastrophe" if some saved a drowning President Donald Trump.

"I will tell you one joke," Hastings said at a "Stronger Together" rally in Sunshine, Florida. "Do you know the difference between a crisis and a catastrophe? A crisis is if Donald Trump falls into the Potomac River and can’t swim. And a catastrophe is [if] anybody saves his ass."

The joke was met with laughter and applause from the crowd.

The same comments would have touched off a week of media outrage during the Obama years. You can see the Washington Post headlines, "Watch: Republicans Applaud Potential Death of First Black President."

But this? No big deal.

Hastings is also the sort of character whose scandals would have drawn the media like flies if he had an R next to his name.

The Treasury Department paid $220,000 in a previously undisclosed agreement to settle a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment that involved Florida Democrat Alcee L. Hastings, according to documents obtained by Roll Call.

Winsome Packer, a former staff member of a congressional commission that promotes international human rights, said in documents that the congressman touched her, made unwanted sexual advances, and threatened her job. At the time, Hastings was the chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, where Packer worked.

Stronger together indeed.
