Pro-life is so complicated. Some think it means not killing babies in the womb, but when you’re liberal, then you understand that pro-life means being liberal.
Pope Leo XIV responded to controversy over the Chicago cardinal’s plans to honor a Catholic U.S. senator who supports legalized abortion, saying that the senator’s record should be considered in its totality and that Americans should search together for the truth on ethical issues.
Several U.S. bishops condemned Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich’s plans to honor U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Illinois, with a “lifetime achievement award” for his work surrounding immigration policy despite his pro-abortion voting record.
“I am not terribly familiar with the particular case. I think it’s important to look at the overall work that a senator has done during, if I’m not mistaken, in 40 years of service in the United States Senate,” the Pope told reporters on Tuesday in response to a question from EWTN News.
“Someone who says I’m against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life,” the pope explained. “Someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
“So they are very complex issues and I don’t know if anyone has all the truth on them,” he continued.
Religious leaders? Apparently not.
Pro-life is very complex and nuanced, and maybe you’re not pro-life unless you support open borders.
Anyway, Sen. Durbin has held his position for around 30 years. Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago and spent a sizable amount of time there and occupied a variety of important quasi-political positions in between his time in Rome and Peru. And he really never developed an opinion on the senator from Illinois? I’m a bit skeptical here. He’s political enough to have strong opinions on politics now, but not on the longtime senator from his home state?

I agree with you, Daniel, and I’m a cradle Catholic.
Non-contradictory consistency is a requirements of reason and not of faith.
Open Borders leading to More Crime and Violence and Murders this is just another Fake Pope like just about all of them
Does the Vatican have open borders ? No. That tells everyone what the pope and the church are all about. The pope can bugger off.
this is like saying your not pro life if you dont adopt a few children from other nations and put them in you home and support them
Leo is a heretic, and therefore, not a Catholic, and therefore, not a Pope.
That’s exactly how I felt about Francis, too. Francis and Leo XIV are both, in fact, antipopes, a condemnation we haven’t seen in many centuries.
They delay and deter my return to the Church as a formerly devout, practicing Catholic. I hope that when my Time comes, the Ultimate Judge will understand, and agree with, my unwillingness to submit to these heretics.
The Pope is pro Catholic affiliated mass migration NGOs getting hundreds of millions in funding. Turning a blind eye to the murders, rapes, and child sex trafficking I suppose will get pro-life pass when the price is right. I’m not a Catholic but attended a wedding recently and what I took to be their statement of faith was very heavy on the social justice lingo like “the oppressed and marginalized”.
As a practicing Catholic I would ask this Pope to look to his own backyard first.
Fix the sins of your priests first…Stay in your lane….
OR>…ship these people to Rome and let them destroy your works of art and a heritage of thousands of years.
Yeah, Leo….load them up and we’ll ship them to you.
From the man who spends his life protected by Swiss Army guards, behind massive stone walls that surround his country and both restrict and prohibit access to those wanting entry. He should read his Bible…he might be shocked to find this verse about him?? Matthew 7:3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
Those Swiss Guards may be cosplaying as Reformation era mercenaries and holding halberds, but they have fully functioning modern automatic weapons within arms reach and know how to use them, because all of them a ex Swiss Army regulars.
They are almost certainly considerably meaner than the USSS.
I was really hoping Cardinal Sarah had been elected, or Pizzaballa. So far Pope Leo is Francis 2.0. Just another wolf amongst the sheep.
“Someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,…..”
Enforcing the borders and immigration laws prevents inhuman treatment of immigrants. The failure to enforce immigration laws exposes the immigrants to labor exploitation, human trafficking for sex and labor, exposure to violent criminals committing rape and robbery.
In addition, the catechism states:
2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others.
It is a matter of prudential judgement as to what means are moral to use to defend the population from aggressors who will exploit loose borders.
you have read the catechism apparently bergoglio and this clown have not. A pope does not have the authority to change church teaching and no one is obliged to follow his particular opinions and recommendations absent their being delivered ex cathedra.
i especially like the use of the turn of phrase “inhumane treatment” at borders. All the outcry over the detention centers with security one finds were created by BO and for the purpose of attempting to protect children who were being used to facilitate border crossings by people who were not necessarily relatives.
He was elected solely for the purpose of disrupting politics in the US with the hope of reopening the spigot of donations that have, for very good reason, dried up and to attempt to reverse catholic support for trump. Only surprise is he is not playing the race card.
the temerity of this man in his remarks is stunning
While we are indeed required to treat all immigrants humanely, there is no requirement that we accept all immigrants, nor that we can’t deport those who are here illegally, or those who violate the conditions of their admission. To do so would be to subvert our democratic principles. The immigration laws were written by our elected representatives, signed into law by our elected president, and found to be constitutional by our courts. To allow the law to be ignored subverts the people’s vote.
Another point: You can be for the death penalty, and still be pro-life. God established the death penalty in Genesis 9:6, saying:
“Whoever sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For in the image of God
He made man.”
Neither God nor Jesus has revoked this. While there are caveats, procedures to ensure due process and other protections in the Bible, nowhere does the Bible revoke the death penalty for capital offenses such as murder. Pope Leo should not be denigrating the beliefs and integrity of pro-life Catholics with his erroneous statements.
I was fixin’ to make a similar statement so it’s better I comment on this statement and then I can say when the UK po-po wants to arrest me in Arizona that the Pope to make such a statement is daft on the Biblical instructions from YHVH’s Holy Spirit inspiration to the writers of the Old Testament.
And Yeshua Jesus’s statement Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
And I ask, is not the Catholic church based on Bible teachings as all Christendom?
Capital punishment is a deterrent. Harsh penalties for crimes against people is a deterrent.
Illegal aliens, not immigrants, have raped and murdered girls, women and males. They distribute deadly drugs
The pope is an American citizen.
The pope only makes opinion not law in USA.
To take the life of a gestating human being or to willfully commit an act of murder against a living person are both actions of intentional evil.
According to this vulgar diminution, the lives of those committing these heinous acts are of greater value than the lives of those destroyed.
This is a papal sociopath, draped in white, harboring a heart of darkness and attempting to promulgate such irrational absurdities as truths of virtuous mercy.
This is the vileness of the sociopath. We are witnesses today of the world’s championing of human barbarity against innocents and then raising their flags of virtue-signaling compassion for saving the malignant monsters among us.
If one wishes to see the most egregious demonstrations of this sociopathy and the dark minions in brainless salutation of it, look to this pope, the mainstream media, and the propagandists of Islam. They stand in a conscienceless repose atop a mountain, gleefully praising those who are lawless, hate-filled, and whose murderous exploits of savage barbarity they claim most worthy to accept through open borders, a license to rape, murder and steal while extending their desires for merciful judgment from those they most revile which we can only attribute to the human stupidity of those who believe themselves above the law.
Such are the results of treating evil with kid gloves and calling it mercy.
This sounds even stronger when women state such is statement of non-misogynistic male, but observations over many decades of life.
Yup, another commie pope, I just knew it.
I am Catholic and I will call him an idiot for saying that. why dont he tell Japan the same thing, why dont he tell muslim countries they should be the ones taking in muslims from palistine or giving them land for a country
this kind of non sense from the pope and Catholic leaders is why we have pro testants today , they left to start up new churches because of idiotic stuff like this
Whenever I see a photo of a pope, I hear a line from “Rosemary’s Baby” spoken by a character talking about the then pope’s 1965 visit to NYC: “When I think what they spend on robes and jewels!” I’ve never been a believer, but I visited the Vatican forty years ago as a tourist to see the art. When I walked through the doors of St. Peter’s my gut reaction was shocked outrage. I thought, How can any “religion” hoard this level of obscene wealth? The pope should liquidate all church real estate, art treasures, investments and corporate holdings and buy his precious “immigrants” their own country (I hear Canada’s for sale). If not, then he should keep his elitist WEF-left rich hypocrite con-man mouth shut. Despicable creature.
Trump should:
1. Annex Greenland;
2. Gift it to the Holy See;
3. Deport all the illegals there;
4. Let the Pope deal with them.
Have fun, Bobby!
Either the Pope is stupid or evil .
When the Pope supports open borders and he also supports a pro-abortion Senator, the Pope is willing to sacrifice the unborn for the illegals – why? – because both the catholic church and the democrats need illegals to grow their base – both have suffered huge losses as their members move on to avoid their insane policies.
The Pope: “the senator’s record should be considered in its totality.”
Wrong, Mr. Pope, no amount of good works can make up for murdering another human being.
The Pope: “Americans should search together for the truth on ethical issues.”
Wrong again, Mr. Pope. The truth is right there in front of your face – read the Bible, God’s law, or read man’s laws – when one uses force to stop an innocent person’s heart from beating, that’s murder – common sense that even a child can see.
I think one could make a case that the U.S. citizenship of this Pope should be voided – let him go back to Peru since he spent most of his life there already.
Matt Walsh just did an excellent show on this and was spot on on every single point. In sum: What the Pope said was absurd. Indeed.
Pope Leo XIV blessed a block of ice at a climate change event on Wednesday, part of his ongoing efforts to highlight environmental concerns and criticize those who “ridicule those who speak of global warming.”
There were easy, humane ways to deal with illegal immigration, which I already advocated in the early 2000s when Bush was President. Such as waiting until the illegal got arrested, then checking his immigration status. But the Democrats rejected the easy ways, and tried for the whole ball of wax.
Is the Pope is a closet anarchist? If he is so pro-open borders then he should set a fine example and open up the Vatican to the hordes. They’ll go through it like a dose of salts. It’ll be gutted just like all those countries now paying for their open border stupidity.
John 14:6. Leo.
Yes. Nevertheless, if you are not in the Church, dan’l, Stay In your Lane.
Why? What “Lane”? Is being a citizen a “Lane”? The “social” policies and political interference of “the Church” have direct culturally devastating impacts on their fellow citizens’ lives even if these churches’ staff and followers disingenuously pretend to be unaware or are self-righteously contemptuous of this reality. Citizens who have nothing to do with any “Church” (or any “religion”) that takes NGO money to do politicized “charity” are forced to endure the consequences of social chaos from these churches’ fanatical selfishness and greed.
Soros’ Open Borders could not have destroyed the West through uncontrolled “migration” without the direct involvement of these churches’ insane “refugee” and migrant sponsorship programs. Bullying citizens with their “morality” by dumping third world and islamic invaders into small towns, rural areas and cities in exchange for NGO cash is about as despicable an act that “the Church” has ever committed in a history littered with cruel contempt for fellow citizens.
It’s not the human and legal right to practice “religion” and hold “beliefs“ for individuals and families that’s the problem. It’s these “churches” who poison the body politic with their endless narcissistic and arrogant “do-gooder” crusades for money and ego. These churches are spitting and sneering in the faces of millions of citizens and they don’t care. This is intolerable. And it must stop. Revoke all tax-free status for all “religious charities” now! If their “work” is of value, their customers will pay for it. Then tax all of their properties and expropriate the land of any who refuse to pay. Enough is enough!
The “Church” has gaslit the public that their politicized and fungible social destruction is “charity” and “morality” for too long. “The Church” is no different than Woke, islam, Trans, the Left, WEF and the rest of the totalitarian destroyers. You are ALL the problem. Whited Sepulchers I believe you were once called.
Well I guess we have to ask this pope again, how many migrants has Vatican City taken in?
The difference between abortion and the death penalty is that we are talking about INNOCENT life. The Pope should be able to make that distanction.
I did not think it possible but Leo may be more of an apostate and dumber than Red Francis.
