Climate change might slow intellectual development, experts warn – UPI
I’m not sure intellectual development involving the media and headlines involving ‘experts’ could slow down any further, but let’s find out.
Kids growing up under higher-than-usual temperatures — average temps above 86 degrees Fahrenheit — are less likely to meet developmental milestones for literacy and mathematics, researchers reported Monday in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
So does this mean that kids in Arizona, Nevada and Texas are dumber? We could compare test scores between Arizona and New York. Especially since some of the researchers involved are in New York.
But, no the ‘experts’ had a better idea.
For the study, researchers analyzed data for more than 19,600 3- and 4-year-olds in the African nations of Gambia, Madagascar, Malawi and Sierra Leone; in Georgia, a nation on the Black Sea; and in Palestine.
‘Palestine’? A part of Israel that’s miles in size and has the same weather? What exactly do Muslim settlers living in Israel have in common with Muslim settlers in Gambia? I mean besides the obvious for the purpose of this study.
Results showed that children exposed to average maximums above 86 degrees F were 5% to nearly 7% less likely to meet basic developmental milestones for reading, writing and math, compared to kids exposed to temps lower than 79 degrees.

Whistleblowers at the Minnesota Department of Human Services report that 1 in 5 autism centers in the state are now under investigation.

One issue that studies like these conveniently ignore is the fact that due to the modern human diet, Human brain size is shrinking and physically smaller than the average brain size from just one hundred years ago.

Look at a map of Africa and you might draw the conclusion that Gambia, Madagascar, Malawi and Sierra Leone, all situated between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, are tropical in nature, It is true Gambia and Sierra Leone are tropical, but both Madagascar include high points that make them sub-tropical in climate.
I lived in Malawi for nearly a year and was surprised that I had to have a fireplace fire to keep the house warm during the winter months. It is only about 4,000′ MSL, but it was still cool during that time of year — not at all what we were expecting in the tropics.
And Madagascar has some highlands that reach about 9,000′ MSL —
My point is that the four African countries included in the study are not wholly in hot climates. I presume this was taken into account by the authors of the study, but I did not see that in the essay and wanted to make it clear this is a kind of apples/oranges comparison when hot climates are being compared.

I have never heard of a single practical good outcome of IQ tests or studies. It’s virtually all hot air that brings out the worst in people who care far more about their images and self-perception than any objectively measurable results of their professional work. Case in point, Elizabeth Warren didn’t build a dang thing except her inflated resume and fake demographic profile. She gets other people to do the work, people whom she thinks are low IQ losers. She takes the credit.
One of the main results of such preoccupations as IQ is that we have produced a mob of narcissistic elite college grads with high, albeit fake, GPAs, that and all the trouble these jerks have caused. The coveting of high IQs and the like, incidentally, has led to grade inflation through intense social pressure. We would have been better off producing substandard windows, or pounding sand.
Students should be learning how to do things well, not preening about their potential. It is, of course, important to have objective tests for individual students checking that progress is being made in skill acquisition, whether reading or mathematics. etc. But the ultimate test is whether someone’s professional work is genuinely useful and of good quality. Otherwise it’s all promise and no delivery. Either we care about who we are, or we care about not only what we predict we can do, but what we actually do.
