Order Michael Finch’s new book, A Time to Stand: HERE. Prof. Jason Hill calls it “an aesthetic and political tour de force.”
There are moments when a civilization reaches a point of vertigo—a moment when it looks over the edge and realizes the ground beneath it has begun to crumble. America is at such a point now. Not because of a recession or a scandal or a political feud, but because of something far older and far more fundamental: the demographic forces that have undone civilizations for thousands of years.
For centuries, the American experiment rested on an unspoken assumption—that those who entered the country wished to participate in it. To become part of its civic culture, its legal inheritance, its moral universe. But that assumption is no longer a given, and the evidence grows clearer by the day.
We have seen a Somali welfare-fraud empire strip hundreds of millions from taxpayers in Minnesota. We have seen the rise of Islamist enclaves in American cities where the cultural gravity is no longer American but imported. Just days ago, we learned of a Delaware University student—an immigrant—arrested with a car full of weapons and a martyrdom note. And in Washington, D.C., yet another Islamist-inspired attack erupted in the heart of the nation’s capital.
These incidents are not isolated. They are not random. They are signals. They tell us that the civic trust that once bound immigrants to the nation is fracturing—and in some cases, collapsing altogether.
But beneath all of this lies a deeper truth, one almost no one in public life is willing to say aloud. Civilizations do not fall because of minorities. They fall because they absorb rival majorities.
A minority—no matter how distinct—cannot transform a civilization. It participates within the host culture; it contributes, adapts, and often strengthens it. But a massive influx of people from a rival civilizational system does something entirely different: it begins to remake the host in its own image.
This is the part of the immigration debate that terrifies people, though few can articulate why. Instinctively, they sense that something enormous is shifting beneath them, something that has nothing to do with economics or compassion or opportunity.
It is the civilizational equation—the asymmetry every functioning culture in history understood.
If every Jew in the world moved to America tomorrow, they would make up less than two percent of the population. A small, industrious, culturally integrated minority does not—cannot—overturn a civilization. They arrive with a moral and historical memory shaped by persecution, resilience, and gratitude. They assimilate; they contribute; they do not colonize.
Imagine the opposite case:
If even a fraction of the world’s 1.9 billion Muslims migrated to America, the United States would cease to exist as a constitutional republic. Not because Muslims are “bad,” and certainly not because they are unwelcome as individuals—but because Islam is not merely a religion. It is a civilizational system: legal, political, social, and theological. It carries its own blueprint for society, its own jurisprudence, its own conception of sovereignty.
A minority integrates. A rival civilization replaces.
This is not prejudice; it is history. It is the story of Rome, which did not fall to an invading army but to a mass migration of entire nations inside its borders. It is the story of Persia, which did not convert to Islam by persuasion but by demographic transformation. It is the story of Lebanon, once the Paris of the Middle East, undone when refugees upended the delicate balance of its society.
Civilizations rarely die in battle. They die by forgetting what they are.
President Donald Trump, in his characteristically blunt way, recently warned that America is “at a tipping point” and will “go the wrong way” if it continues to “take in garbage.” The phrasing was provocative, but the truth beneath it is not. A nation that does not control who enters it eventually loses the right to decide what it becomes.
Mass migration is not charity. It is not compassion. It is not even policy. It is the most consequential civilizational act a society can undertake. And if a nation imports millions of people who do not share its laws, its values, or its historical memory, then the host culture does not persist. It dissolves.
The American people sense this. They intuit what Aristotle warned long ago:
“The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.”
It is a folly to pretend that all cultural systems are equivalent, or that all migrations carry identical consequences. A small minority can live peacefully within a society. A civilizational bloc reshapes it.
This is the danger America now faces. And it is not theoretical—it is already happening. Cities transformed. Laws bent. Allegiances divided. Parallel societies emerging inside a nation that once prided itself on being a single civic culture.
We stand on the threshold of a choice. Not between compassion and cruelty, or openness and isolation, but between civilizational survival and civilizational dissolution.
America must decide whether it wishes to remain recognizably American as civilizations do not often get second chances.
Aaron Shuster is a writer and filmmaker whose work explores the moral, historical, and civilizational forces shaping the modern world.

Awesome piece. Is there any way you can send it to everyone in the country who uses an iphone? Maybe Elon Musk knows someone who could help arrange that? Naturally their phones would start working again after it has been read!
Thanks again!!
Pay attention, Europe, or your days are numbered. In a few decades America will be dealing with a nuclear armed Caliphate in what used to be western Europe.
Muslims may not be bad. But everything about them is. Everything. Mr.. Shuster’s warning about the present threat to American democracy would ring a good deal more true if he weren’t afraid of being seen as a bigot. It is past time to acknowledge that the solution to that threat is going to be cruel and ugly, probably some kind of forced immigration. If we don’t have the stomach for it, then we had better get ready to seeing our daughters in chadors, an America without science, art, progress, or humanity. Unlike other religions, the purpose of Islam is not to provide a moral code for its adherents, but to be the blueprint for the capture of society by tribal interests.
Sir, do not replicate the fallacy of the author: by definition, muslims are those adhering to islam! An attempt of discerning muslims from islam is oxymoronic!
You are making a moot point. The truth is all nations with a military capability agree that only 20-25% of Muslims are radical. But, out of a global population of 2 billion, that means that somewhere between 200-300 million Islamists want you, your spouse and your children dead. The remaining 70-75% ARE REDUNDANT as they make no effort to deter or alter the behavior of their fellow Muslims, or even to distance themselves from their actions. A large percentage of those even cheer on the activists and terrorists among them.
Islam is a cancerous blight on humanity. As Winston Churchill so astutely observed….’Islam in a man is as bad as rabies in a dog”.
Rev. Roy………..<
Good points all. The left gives all this a pass and is also increasingly anti-Semitic. And yet in certain quarters on the right, the Jews are seen as the problem. How often do some podcasters claim they have dual loyalty, don’t assimilate or use other tropes? Meanwhile, the group that absolutely has dual loyalties and doesn’t assimilate gets a pass.
The author has introduced or emphasized the thought categories needed for everyone to analayzie the current situation. I agree wholeheartedly that I wish every American and everyone in the Western world, could read this.
Those lines from the old Mary Tyler Moore TV sit-com set in Minneapolis, Minnesota now apply to Somalia transplant Ilhan Omar, the Democ-rat congressperson from that district: “Love is all around, no need to waste it/ You can have the town, why don’t you take it/ You’re gonna make it after all.” From Mary’s social climbing to Ilhan’s frenzied plundering, what the heck happened? The parasites have darn near devoured the host. What’s next? Michigan.
The assumptions in this article fail to touch the root of the problem. We are dying because we embraced the post-war liberal consensus. This liberal consensus lies about humanity, human nature, natural “rights” and distorts human equality before God to mean radical hierarchy-destroy sameness.
The above article by Ben Crenshaw contains excellent links to allow the reader to understand more fully Mr. Crenshaw’s devastating and undeniable assessment of our condition. Unless we get to the root of our problems, we cannot dare to hope. Hope requires honest assessment and ugly truth in our present hour.
Assimilation would be the least of our worries if government consistently performed its chief purpose to protect its citizens. Assimilation is a problem created when we falsely assume everyone is a potential American who need only cross our border and give assent to our “national propositions.”
A historian on the British “New Culture Forum” show observed that, when a specific group comes to a country and says “we have our own legal system, our own courts, and we refuse to accommodate you,” that, of course, is not immigration and assimilation, it is colonization.
Aaron, Here, here excellent article and sadly so true that if we want to preserve our Republic America better wake up
America has. It’s the 535 in DC who haven’t.
America is not a nation of mere immigrants. It is a nation of people who joined into building the American dream as understood by normal people. The fact that many were immigrants was incidental. Being an immigrant in and of itself does not make a person good or bad.
The Left has always understood that there are distinctions among immigrants. It labels some immigrants as colonists or settlers, while reserving nicer terms for those immigrants it favors. The woke right also distinguishes between different immigrants. They always hated e.g. Jewish Americans.
The Wokes make evil distinctions among immigrants. They hate people who want to MAGA. The correct distinction among immigrants is between those who are or those who are not genuinely friendly to our culture.
And yes, there is a distinctly American culture and it is not just about food or music, although we have some great food and some great music, but more importantly it is about recognizing and respecting good old fashioned hard work and human dignity regardless of superficial differences, and the importance of opportunity for ordinary people to thrive and succeed and where cheaters get to pound sand. It is a place where we can disagree about everything from baseball to theology and still be good neighbors. Any so-called immigrant who wants to take that away from us was never a welcome immigrant in the first place.
We are surely way past the threshold here. The choices we have already made (or made for us by Democrats) are nearly impossible to undo. The immigrants that have been let in are not all Muslim but they are all potential Democrats. Not all the Muslims are terrorists, but nearly all sympathies with the aims of Islamic jihad, will give shelter and moral support to it.
Moreover, this is not a message that needs to be spread far and wide. Everyone already knows all of it. Everybody knows the dangers of importing thousands of potential jihadists. Everybody knows that Islam is incompatible with western civilization; those that want more of it here … are themselves the enemies of civilization. The problem is that about half of us (the Democrats) want those dangers fulfilled. They want America and western civilization dead. They want conservative patriots dead.
And they already know just how to do it; they know exactly what we know.
How about making pivotal articles like this “reportable” on X at least?
That would spread the word and potentially attract more subscribers — and likely trouble makers but you know how to handle that!
This is excellent and applies in spades to Western Europe, which is worse shape than the U.S.
Yes applies to Europe. I’m in Canada living in a metro area that has the 2nd largest Muslim population in N. America. Canada is over in many respects not the least of which is @ 5.5 % Muslim population – and growing rapidly – compared to the US which is about 3.2% The political offices attained by Muslims and their consequent influence in just the last 2 -3 years is frightening. The US is the last bulwark standing against the Muslim invasion and I fear the US is not up to the job because of the overwhelming influence of the left. At some point in the near future there will be lots of blood spilled.
It’s sad that even this author, who wrote such an important and illuminating article, fears to name things as they are.
By definition, muslims are those who adhere to islam! An attempt of discerning muslims from islam is oxymoronic!
And yes, Islam is not merely a religion. It is a civilizational system: legal, political, social, and theological. It carries its own blueprint for society, its own jurisprudence, its own conception of sovereignty.
And yes, “Mass migration is not charity. It is not compassion. It is not even a policy. It is the most consequential civilizational act a society can undertake!”
In fact, NO SOCIETY MUST MASSIVELY BRING THOSE WHO NEED ASSIMILATION (even if they are willing to assimilate)!
I recently found an expression that is accurate, and still gets past the politically correct. I can’t claim credit for it, because I saw it on either this site or perhaps Jihad Watch. If one refers to “Islamic supremacists”, it does not impose the false dichotomy that is present in terms like “Islamism”, but because Leftists don’t think that one could possibly be referring to the whole of Islam, it goes unchallenged.
Arnold Toynbee’s thesis in A Study of History is that each and every civilizational collapse
has occurred shortly after the host society invites
a known-to-be jealous and angry external proletariat to immigrate.
His exhaustive and comprehensive examples
all appear, in hindsight, as intentionally suicidal.
Likely the most in-depth study ever published of the history of civilized mankind
(12 volumes/7000 pages/3 million words/400 page index)
it has consistently been panned by the Left (who refuse to read even the abridged version)
because, yawn, Toynbee was a Christian!
