How did an Islamist socialist who posed with an unindicted terror bombing coconspirator become elected to head a city of terror survivors, the “most Jewish city in America” and how did he defeat an Italian-American political dynasty in what was once an Italian-American city?
Because that New York City, the one people imagine from movies, no longer exists.
In 1989, the last year of Mayor Ed Koch’s administration, Jews outnumbered Muslims roughly 4 to 1. By 2013, the last year of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration, the number of Muslims had doubled and the number of Jews continued to drop.
And by the time Zohran Mamdani beat Andrew Cuomo, there were more Muslims than Italian Americans in NYC.
So much for New York City being the “most Jewish city” in America. Or “Italian city”. Like so many European cities, it’s been redefined by waves of Muslim mass migration.
There wasn’t an Irish candidate in the race because the number of Irish-Americans in what is considered “one of the most Irish city in America” long ago dropped below that of Muslims.
Never mind the Polish population represented by Curtis Sliwa which is even smaller.
New York City’s old ‘ethnic’ working class population is gone. Much of it fled the chaos and violence of the 1970s and 1980s. By the time Mayor Rudy Giuliani restored order by cracking down on crime, they didn’t come back. Instead they were replaced by college students, hipsters and third world immigrants who not only voted for Democrats, but for the far Left.
5 million residents were born outside New York City. Less than 4 million were born in the city.
While New Yorkers went for Cuomo, 50% to 38% for Mamdani, those who had lived in the city for 10 years or less went for Mamdani by 82% to 16%.
This reflects both external mass immigration but internal migration from other parts of the country. Another way to measure the foreign population in New York City is to look at the proportion of those to whom English is a second language. The number of non-English speakers has been steadily rising since 1990 and the number of English speakers declined from 63% to 52%.
It’s now almost even.
Much of New York City no longer even speaks English. That’s why Mamdani could campaign in Arabic.
While a lot of parts of the country, including Florida, complain about New Yorkers moving there, New Yorkers (while they still existed in NYC) complained about non-New Yorkers moving to the city.
This internal migration by non-New Yorkers sent prices soaring and fundamentally altered the character of the city from a tough working class and middle class city to a hipster paradise.
The college students who moved to the city and got jobs here were less likely to get married and form families leading to Manhattan becoming one of the largest (and certainly the densest) reservoirs of singles in the country. Combined with the growth in ‘single parent’ households among minority groups, the New York City of families has disappeared.
A majority of households in New York City are single now. The number of families continues to drop. While exit polls didn’t ask about marital status, single people tend to vote more liberal.
Pre-election polls showed Mamdani winning over only 16% of Jews, 28% among Catholics and 36% among Protestants. The only ‘religious’ group Mamdani performed were “Other” which presumably were boosted by his Muslim voter base. How does a politician lose religious people by decisive numbers and yet win a mayoral election? Religion has been declining as well. Especially among white New Yorkers.
The religiously affiliated are still a majority, but the numbers of the religiously unaffiliated have been rising sharply. Among those 45 years old and younger, the group that Mamdani won, the gap is 60% to 40%. The gap is narrower still, 55% to 45%, among those under 30, and among those under 25 years old, it’s split evenly. Among white New Yorkers, a majority are unaffiliated.
These were some of Mamdani’s best voters.
Paradoxically (or not so paradoxically) the lack of real religiosity among New York City’s Christian and Jewish populations is part of the reason why an Islamist won the mayoralty.
Mamdani’s defeat of Andrew Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa and Eric Adams, all personalities dating back to an older New York City, the city of the 80s and 90s, marked the defeat of old New York City by a ‘new’ New York City. This city has no character, no tradition and no roots. It’s interchangeable with every upscale gentrified city in America and all across Europe.
This Neo-New York could just as easily be London or Toronto. It has no past and no future. Like Mamdani, it’s not part of America, and is open to being colonized by any group with organization, determination and a mission. What was done to London is happening to New York City. It’s futile to ask why New Yorkers are letting this happen, like me, they no longer live there.

This tells me NYC is lost forever., doesn’t it? If Mamdani’s term is disastrous is that going to change anyone’s voting pattern? The demographics are the demographics. The old school Jews, Italians, Irish, etc, are long gone.

I was a friend to an older woman on UWS a member of the rothschild family who was an intimate to many of the frankfort group. why did jews found the NAACP and help radicalize the black community ? what business was this of theirs ? I lived thru the student’s uprisings of the late 60s and 70s again mostly organized by jews in both the student and faculties of our universities. Now when the left comes as they always do to “eat their own” they are trying to claim victim status. My only point of contention is I wouldn’t call Soros a Jew. Soros doesn’t meet any definition of the word Jew. His ethnicity is Hungarian. People refer to Soros, and people like him as “secular Jews” a made up term and a nice way to say atheist.
I have second cousins who were from Italy. One being groomed for the priest hood, They’ve been in the US for many decades now. Came to the US when they were around 10 yrs old. Well, their entire family are not only atheist’s, but radical Leftist’s. This despite their parents being very old school Italian conservative Catholics.
The common denominator I see is atheism. People who faithfully follow Mosaic Judaism and are religious are the Jews today. “Secular Jews” who’ve abandoned any sense of Judaism are not real Jews, IMO. They are simply atheist. In Soros’ case his family is Hungarian. He is so far removed from anything considered Jewish that there is no way he can be considered a Jew.
On Francisco Gil-White’s substack he discusses st length Soros’s supposed Jewish provenance and concludes it was bogus.
Soros was a Nazi collaborator who survived using false papers and helped the Nazzis seize Jewish property during “the happiest period of my life”. There are also persistent stories that he denounced Jews in hiding. His family was ethnically Jewish but virulently antisemitic (much like Karl Marx, or Torquemada). Even though he was only a teenager at the time, he should have been strung up like Mussolini.

there are genetic markers which establish this so it is not tied to a belief system entirely. the israelis have teams of anthropologists who investigate claims of ancient judaism the world over. It certainly happened when the Falashas of Ethiopia requested the right of return which was granted and they started emigrating in early 80s. My Jewish FIL had a fit over this and it is unclear to me whether israel did this out of principle or fear of being branded racist. There is the Lembas of subsaharan africa mostly in SA and zimbabwe who call their religious leader “bubba” and who looked like some black faced jewish grandfather from the bronx. The Kaifeng jews of china also come to mind. I believe the Israelis were able to test the lembas for mitochondrial DNA back to Aaron successfully. Tel Aviv (the Dan region in central Israel) has about 3.5 million people, and roughly 90% are Jews. New York has less than half its peak Jewish population and no more than one million Jews in the city, and fewer than a million in Norhern New Jersey, long Island and Westchester. BTW, Orthodox Jews are the only segment of the Jewish population that is not shrinking rapidly in New York. People like Jon Stewart or Bernie Sanders don’t have Jewish grandchildren. None of the living members of the Sulzberger Ochs clan who founded The New York Times are Jewish. “Progressive” movements in Judaism are a conveyor belt toward assimilation and disappearance of Jews.
Too bad you missed actual data. There are far fewer Jews in NYC than Tel Aviv. In fact, there are more Jews in Houston than NYC. The Jews fled NYC long ago. Of those remaining, 84% of NYC Jews voted against Mamdami. Catholics and Protestants far outnumber Jews and 36% of them voted for Mamdami. It’s anti-Semitic to blame Jews for results you don’t like. It’s anti-Semitic to invent demographics only about the Jews without calling out the Catholics and Protestants for their behavior which is far more left than the Jews are. 80%+ of all Jews have been voting Republican for the last 3 election cycles. Some of us would love to leave NYC, but cannot. My wife & I own businesses and properties here. This is where we make our living. I would sell it all and leave in a heartbeat, but complicating factors don’t afford me that choice right now. So here I stay, for now. But I WILL increase my supply of ammunition, because sooner or later, I will have to defend my family.
You say you own properties which I assume, perhaps wrongly, you mean residential rentals.
I am a landlord and every time I read of the landlording laws in NY I wonder why anyone would want properties there. I am truly curious, why would you be a landlord in a state and city where they keep stacking the deck against you?
I live in CA but in 2008 I sold my CA apartment buildings and bought properties in the mid west, one of the big reasons for doing so being the anti landlord political climate.
I have a deadbeat tenant who hasn’t paid rent for over a year. My only option is court, but who’s got time ? Besides, the unscrupulous miscreant would probably retaliate with slander (or worse).
Leave to the online crowd to assume everyone can move away in the blink of an eye. Not everyone can.
Especially people with businesses and family and older people.
It is hard and inadvisable to move far away when one is older. Family nearby is important.

So basically outside of a few beleaguered neighborhoods, NYC-in-name-only sucks.
In that case, then we need a new NYC. A place with a functioning financial district, functioning museums and opera houses and libraries (yeah I still like the ancient technology), universities worthy of the name, real jobs for real people who want families, real delis, kosher grocery stores, and cops who will annihilate any `grooming’ gangs before they set foot within 100 miles of city limits.
And a baseball team or few that play in real ballparks manned by guys who are not juiced on PEDs.
But NYC is still our turf even if hipsters and jihadis have temporarily messed it up.
I take a backseat to no one in my love of New York City. It’s in my blood and bones. And the city has been through some really bad times in the 70s, but I don’t know if this is reversible without mass deportations.
The museums are wonderful, the libraries however have gone downhill (like in a lot of places) and exist primarily to provide places for the homeless to look at porn and for promoting woke garbage to kids. The grand lions are still there, but remodelings have vandalized the whole purpose of the library. As for opera houses,

I agree. I had added ‘functioning’ because of that degradation you describe. I’m an upstate hayseed from Yonkers, and just visited the Bronx a walk away, or Manhattan by train or subway. I don’t know what it’s like there anymore. Quite a few years ago, and sometime after I had moved to NJ, I know they built in Yonkers what seemed like it might turn out to be a nice new library over by the Hudson. I think it was replacing the old downtown library. I don’t know what became of it.
You’ll just have to let the spirit of NYC build up again around you, wherever you go!

Individual states might get there, but that will be the threshold of civil war. Or maybe a “peaceful partitioning”? I am now 74. Will I still be alive to see it?

Too many dismiss the fact that from Genesis ch. 12 through the gospels and early Acts concerns God’s program with Israel. “Christianity” is not there, but they snatch certain things from what had to do with Israel and form their own ideas from it. It was Israel, God’s people, who were admonished to rule themselves righteously and to be good to each other. It was in-house teaching. All the Gentiles were outside and on their own by their choice (Romans ch. 1; Eph. 2). The Lord did teach Israel to be kind and generous to the heathen, “stranger’s,” but it was to be to their own, first.
It is basically the same with the Church the body of Christ under the authority of its apostle, Paul:
Galatians 6:10 “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

I grew up in NYC; left it not long after Berkowitz reign of terror. The neighborhood I grew up in was already changing a lot in the early to mid 70’s. The 70’s in NYC; I don’t know if there was one train that didn’t have graffiti on it.

My wife and I, NH. residents, loved NYC. We visited NYC many times, attended 45 Broadway shows, dined at the Rainbow Room and other unparalleled ” Five Star” restaurants.

There are lots of good old movies that show New York as it was. It is the best way to see the NY that we remember. I live in Forest Hills but only go into Manhattan once or twice per year.
As the son of a naturalized Italian immigrant, I grew up in a small town just north of Manhattan in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s (82 now), and rode the NY Central to work in the City for many years, enjoying the unique flavor of the city with pockets of ethnic contrast. It was culturally and ethnically diverse, by predominantly white with strong religious values. This is the culture which defined NYC. But the 1960’s marked a significant increase in crime from the black and Puerto Rican immigrants who flooded in looking for jobs. This was exacerbated by activists like Al Sharpton creating tension and violence. It’s been going downhill ever since.

Look, the entire United States is metastacized. What else could you call a national debt of $38T, a sum which can never pe paid off? How many of our great cities – New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans – are still fit places to live? I think New York City, our archetypical Great American City, tells the truth better than anything. Its new mayor has no experience in government or business, its streets and public transportation are so far from safe they’re a joke, and it’s questionable how many residents would still live there if they had someplace else to go. I feel for New Yorkers, really.

I knew things had changed but found these graphs surprising and very informative.
I grew up in Central Islip, NY ( on Long Island) and graduated high school in 1975. The town was approximately 75% white, 15% black, and 10% Hispanic. Now its majority Hispanic. When I switched from Catholic school to the elementary school that had almost all of the black students I was shocked at the difference in discipline.
In college at SUNY Oneonta I took a course “Urban Economics..” The professor, who was black and from Africa, told us that evidence indicates when the population of a town reached 15%, white flight accelerated. I got to witness that very flight. That flight took off in the late 1970’s and early 80s. At great expense, most of the people who could afford to moved to nearby towns .

The surrendering of NYC to Mamdani is heartbreaking. New York had everything and was magical in that sense. No other major city had Manhattan’s vibe; one had to experience it to know it. It’s a huge loss for those who loved the city in its every aspect.
I live in a suburb that borders the City of Toronto. 2 of my 3 daughters & their families live in Toronto. Daniel mentions Toronto at the end of the article with good reason. NYC’s Muslim population is about 9% – Toronto’s Muslim population was about 9.6% back in 2021 and is assuredly higher now given the unbridled immigration into Canada since 2021 – many of which end up in the Toronto area. A Muslim mayor in the left leaning city of Toronto is very much a possibility in the near future. Many of us can well identify with NYC and fear for the uncertain future.
