Remember when the New York Times was dubbed the ‘gold standard’ in journalism? Remember when there was even such a concept? And remember when after Trump won the first time, the media decided to browbeat Big Tech into paying it to be in charge of censorship, which it called ‘fact checking’, even as it stopped doing any actual fact checking of its own content?
Combine all that with DEI and political clickbait even at the top papers and you end up with a level of incompetence that has to be seen to be believed.
“A correction will appear in tomorrow’s print edition: “A headline with an article on Friday about President Trump’s threats to leave NATO misstated the full name of the body. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, not the North American Treaty Organization” the New York Times tweeted.
This wasn’t some random misprint on line 49, this was a massive header.
Everyone makes mistakes. The New York Times and major papers had layers of ‘fact checkers’ and ‘editors’ to see that didn’t happen. But that hasn’t been the priority in a long time.
When Sarah Palin sued the New York Times over the latest iteration of the ‘target’ map smear, what was really shocking was that top personnel at the Times genuinely did not know it was a lie and had done no fact checking even though all of this had played out for years already.
“Sarah Palin’s lawsuit against the New York Times exposed how shoddy the paper’s process that led to it repeating the ‘bullseye’ smear against her was. Former editorial page editor James Bennet sourced the widely discredited claim that her election map had somehow led to the shooting of former Rep. Gabby Giffords by a mentally unstable man from an old column by a former restaurant critic.”
They quickly checked their own archives, saw a column from one of their people, and went with it.
Could I make a mistake like that? I’m certainly not perfect. But I’m also not a $600 million media operation.
Assuming NATO stood for ‘North American Treaty Organization’ isn’t political. It just shows that the paper is hiring people who don’t know anything, but probably check the right identity politics boxes, and that there’s no one to catch mistakes because that doesn’t matter anymore. What does matter is being on the profitable side of culture war social media debates while still convincing the upper middle class readers with professional class status that its views are worth paying attention to because it’s on the right side of history and will destroy Trump.

Fact-checking was bogus from the start: it was immediately used for political propaganda.
“Fake Checking” is what it really is.
Misreading NATO as “North American …” is a good example of projection, the brain filling in the whole phrase from just a few of the letters.
I have not looked at a single New York Times articles in a long time so having as a headline as obviously wrong like the one mentioned in this article is funny and sad at the same time.
For me the New York Times lost any “gold standard of journalism” was back in 2005 where they were misled by James Frey who published a book called A Million Little Pieces which supposed to be a semi-autobiographical book of his supposed drug addiction. This guy even fooled Oprah Winfrey who placed on her book list of recommended books. It took a less widely known known news source, The Smoking Gun to punch holes in James Frey’s lies to where both Oprah and the NY Tines came out with egg on their face and both had to apologize for not “fact checking.”
It seems things have not only have not improved but have gotten worse.
The NYTes never had a gold standard – they had a self proclaimed title just like Walter Cronkite’s “most trusted man in America” title.
The Times had Walter Duranty & Jayson Blair on their payroll – both infamous for their pure bullshit.
(Walter a communist sympathizer; Jayson a low I.Q DEI hire.)
And speaking of undeserved titles, Durante got a Pulitzer prize for covering up the mass starvation in Ukraine.
Yeah, Duranty was the first NYT scumbag I thought of when I read this article.
THIS^^^^^^^^ IS exactly WHY we built the internet!!!!
FUN FACT: In 1976 GHWBush DDEENIED the world the NCP format internet for the Bicentennial. The 50 or so students who LOBBIED for that PUBLICLY in 1976, are ALL either dead or in prison NOW!!!!
LET THAT SINK IN!!
Then there’s ICANN in 2011 (obama).
I spent the ’90s in a job that involved fairly close contact with journalists on a daily basis.
It didn’t take long to realise that the vast majority of them were morons with a surface facility for words.
And nasty to boot
I’ve heard others in your position (close contact with reporters) say the same thing, but also remarked on their condescending arrogance.
They graduated from journalism school at a prestigious university and are therefore endowed with a skill-set that transcends your understanding!
Example:
Mary Mapes (who was fired alongside Dan Rather) repeatedly asked “Are you a journalist?” during a hostile interview trying to plug her book.
After answering “No.”, yet again, Mapes would retreat to her only retort – “Then you aren’t qualified to know what you’re describing.”
Mary Mapes’ book has the ridiculous bloviating title “Truth and Duty”.
(The only truth about her book is it didn’t sell.)
When I was about 12 years old I was watching Dan Rather with my parents deliver the news and I blurted out “He’s lying!” My mother responded by saying “They couldn’t say that if it wasn’t true.” She is in her 80s now, and even though she is as MAGA as they come and knows the MSM lies about everything she still watches it and her first instinct is to take it at face value. There is a reason the vast majority of these protestors are elderly. They’ve had a lifetime of brainwashing and conditioning by the MSM they can’t overcome. The world of lies, deceit and pharma ads concealed under a tone of authority and rationalism is like a security blanket for them. It may explain TDS- that a normal, non-conformist way of speaking is such an intrusion into their false sense of reality that they react violently
some of us octogenarians have seen the light, you were right about Dan Rather
My parents told me this: while William F. Buckley, Jr. was running for mayor of NYC, he circulated a poster of a photo of Fidel Castro reading the New York Times with the caption: “I get my news from the Uptown Daily Worker.”
The feckless New York Times is the gold standard of DEI journalism just like Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson (“what is a woman? I dunno”) is the gold standard of DEI legal education. In an age where text messages write themselves (smartphones, they call them) functional illiteracy is not a disqualifier, it’s a resume enhancer. Ask autopen Joe Bite-Me, the Democ-rat zombie that occupied the White House for four recent years. On second thought, you’d have to ask Mrs. Bite-Me because oblivious Joe doesn’t even know his anus from a hole in the ground.
Yep, joe was rejected as too dishonest, too low IQ, and unfit for presidential office decades before obama tapped him. But dems just waited until a new generation of ignoramouses came up to “rehabilitate” him.
These are military level CRIMES against humanity!!! we NEED to see “rope dancing” performed by “famous’ people….
And with AI everyone has become a “journalist”. Social media had become the trash bin of information.
How many facts can a facts checker check if a facts checker actually checked facts?
… all of them
… of course
… shun the Unbeliever!
back when [69] we laughed at how stupid the journalism majors were, little did we realize that in 50 years they would almost ruing our great nation
