The long silly debate over whether Cuomo or Sliwa should drop out is pointless and moot. The base for both candidates is unlikely to switch. In a two man race, some Sliwa supporters might vote for Cuomo just to oppose Mamdani, others will just stay home, while few Cuomo voters, who are mainly Democrats, stand any real chance of going to Sliwa.
The polls being brandished by both sides are only semi-relevant because everything will come down to turnout.
Mamdani ended up as the nominee in a low-turnout primary because his base, leftists and Muslims, had all the enthusiasm and no one was especially enthusiastic about voting for Cuomo.
That’s still the case.
Current early turnout numbers seem to be high and skewed older which raises the possibility that there may be a saner electorate turning out, but don’t bet against Democrat seniors voting for the party nominee no matter what.
Cuomo’s more aggressive messaging recognized that there was no energetic base that was going to turn out for him, but might turn out against Mamdani, plus he might break off some Sliwa voters. It’s probably a better bet than touting his liberal credentials. If non-Mamdani voters are going to turnout enthusiastically, it won’t be for Cuomo, but out of fear of what Mamdani will do to them and the city. It’s why the media and lefties staged their freakout and Dems followed.
A turnout election in NYC often comes down to bloc votes and that’s why the move to push out Mayor Eric Adams was likely foolish and short-sighted. Yes, a lot of residents were angry and disappointed with his tenure, but Adams could rally two sure bases, black voters and Chassidic Jews (getting those together is already an impressive accomplishment) that would reliably turn out. And having those black church ladies and Chassidic young men troop to the polls is worth far more than Cuomo’s hypothetical poll numbers. Adams is unpopular, but Cuomo is actually hated.
If anyone could have beaten Mamdani in a turnout election in which the voters would have resigned themselves to a less bad alternative, it was Eric Adams.

People used to think of the Democrat Party as the enemy within, as in homegrown. Now I do believe they are controlled by foreigners, and Mamdani is perfect evidence of that.
Baldy Adams? He couldn’t win a shit contest in a homeless encampment. That’s why he isn’t running. Moron Mommydady will “win” and take NYC straight down the toilet, WHERE IT BELONGS.
See ya, bitches. Enjoy the unbridled crime ans minority scum. Say hi to Trannyfa.
mi heffy Jeffy – do not despair – instead bend a knee and humble yourself as I do, to pray that the one who truly loves NYC and has proved this with his actions to protect NYC is Curtis Sliwa will be elected the next NYC mayor.
Now for the smartass version: mi heffy Jeffy, bend a knee and you bend an elbow — get it?
My brief and occasional bar room days I bent an elbow–get it…oh that’s rich …where’s Ed Sullivan now that I am ready?
I like Curtis Sliwa. I watched a documentary on him and the Guardian Angels. He’s a good guy.
All the political crooks people relied on to protect them were replaced by commie crooks who hate their guts.
Agree! Adams had a shady background but I saw evidence of humanity in him. Which is more than I can say for many.
I do think Sliwa should drop out. His crazed hate for Adams and refusal to step aside render him clownish and insincere about his life’s work ( the citizen safety issues – not the cat rescue). Yet, his dropping out might not have made much difference if people just stayed home. So, I cannot disagree with you.
At this point, I’m just praying. I can’t vote in NYC. I wish I could – one million times over.
(If you’d told me a few years ago, that I’d back Cuomo, I’d have said that was nuts. Now everything is nuts).
New York City Home of that cheap Salsa should just end up as a Poverty Pocket under Mum-Dummy
Eric Adams did himself in by encouraging border jumpers to come to NYC and greeting them with goody bags. By the time he realized this was a disaster, it was too late: and the Left started to really hate him. Yes, many people hate Cuomo – but Mamdani is far more dangerous and a real hater.
NYC needs a viral infection of MDS, a healthy viral infection, Instead, it gets TDS.
Low turnout is how the aoc came about! The R’s need to up their game!
