Order Daniel Greenfield’s new book, Domestic Enemies: The Founding Fathers’ Fight Against the Left: HERE.
Fourteen years ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center named me a hate group of one. The honor wasn’t mine alone, I shared it with a sign outside a bar and a brand of gun oil.
What was behind the SPLC’s sloppy hate group designation of one man, a bar sign and other random items was its obsession with manufacturing a constant rise in ‘hate groups.’
Year after year, the SPLC would issue reports claiming that hate groups were increasing in number, and then fundraise off the urgent threat that they had invented.
I caught them doing it time and time again.
In 2017, the SPLC issued a report claiming that the “number of anti-Muslim hate groups tripled since 2015”. How did the leftist group arrive at this number? It listed Act for America, a patriotic organization started by a Christian refugee from Islamic persecution, as one group in 2015.
Then it listed 45 chapters of Act for America as separate organizations in 2017. Suddenly the number of ‘Islamophobic’ groups had tripled. Such pathetically obvious statistical frauds were all too common in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s work, but the media rarely questioned it.
Or why the SPLC seemed so bent on artificially inflating the number of supposed hate groups.
Next year however the SPLC listed a progressive town on its ‘Hate Map’ because there had been an online comment that proposed a Neo-Nazi book club should meet there. There was no evidence that the club existed, that it had ever met at the town or that the town had anything to do with it, but the town still found it impossible to get the SPLC to delist it. And media stories appeared for the first time questioning the SPLC’s methodology which proved to be made up.
In addition to inventing and faking ‘hate groups’, we already knew that the Southern Poverty Law Center had been helping fund some hate groups, but the recent grand jury indictment of the organization shows that the scale of these payments had surpassed $3 million.
Even while old ladies were being sent envelopes stamped with klansmen burning crosses and urged to donate to stop them, the SPLC was using their money to fund members of both the Ku Klux Klan and the United Klans of America through bank accounts linked to fake organizations.
Despite its public hostility, the SPLC always had always enjoyed a somehow complicated relationship with the KKK. Morris Dees, the founder of the SPLC, who had formerly worked for George Wallace, had defended a klansman attacking civil rights workers. Dees, an experienced direct marketer, turned his direct sales machine into the SPLC, suing Klan groups for millions, and then funneled millions to Klan members supposedly acting as ‘informants’ in ways that blurred the line between the SPLC and the KKK. The line grew even blurrier when Dees was ousted from the SPLC over organizational sexism and racism allegations.
Dees had switched from profiting off the KKK and allied racists to profiting from white liberal northerners who viewed them as a dangerous bogeyman. When efforts to pretend that the KKK was still relevant faltered, the SPLC went into the business of similarly fighting religious conservatives and anyone concerned about Islam. That’s how I became a hate group.
Along the way, the SPLC tried to destroy the David Horowitz Freedom Center, running a covert campaign to get our bank accounts shut down, to cut off donations to us and to stop us from being able to run our websites, like Front Page Magazine, and to even exist at all on the internet. We eventually beat the SPLC, but not without taking a serious beating along the way. Others suffered worse. Including a terrorist attack aimed at Alliance Defending Freedom by a gunman sourcing his target from the SPLC.
But, unlike the KKK, the SPLC didn’t write us any checks.
The SPLC had two motives for its systemic fraud: first to raise money, and second, to manufacture a crisis of constantly growing hate groups to justify censoring conservatives.
Equating David Horowitz, who had fought for civil rights, with the Klan, which turned out to be subsidized by the SPLC, was about weaponizing the fake campaign against the KKK to eliminate as much of the conservative movement as the leftist group could manage to take out.
The SPLC needed the KKK, just as it needed the ‘Unite the Right’ rally, where it was helping to fund a participant, to keep the money coming and to end free speech in America.
Soon after the Southern Poverty Law Center named me a hate group and I began looking into their hate maps and hate lists, I quickly saw that the SPLC was faking its data. The fake data helped make the SPLC into an authority on ‘hate’. The FBI and local law enforcement turned to the SPLC Politicians propped it up. The tech industry allowed it to censor whom it wanted to.
My listing was just one piece of bad data that the SPLC had been feeding into a machine of lies that made it wealthy and powerful. The Southern Poverty Law Center’s reign of terror was built on lies, on fraud and on funding the very people whom it promised donors that it was fighting.
Now, the curtain is rising to reveal the SPLC’s dirty tactics and how it faked hate in America.
The Southern Poverty Law Center faked a crisis to gain power and profit. Now it’s time for the SPLC to apologize to organizations like ours and to individuals like me for trying to destroy them by using lies, and it’s time for the legal system to hold the SPLC accountable for funding hate.

Kind of reminds me of Joseph Wambaugh’s nonfiction book “Fire Lover” where the serial arsonist turns out to be a fireman.
That thing with the fireman is not all that uncommon.
People who are fascinated by fires join fire brigades, and then decide they need more fires, so start setting them.
PLC actually started out honest…… For about the first eight years…… Until the immediate aftermath of of assassination of Alan Berg.
THEN, it went after money, which came from trading on the tired old “progressive” script. By the time it had refused to file an amicus brief in the Richard Jewell case (which it should have (it doEs bill itself as a POVERTY law center, after all)), on poor Mr. Jewell’s behalf, its phonied-up revised mission should have been evident to everyone.
By the way…
After a quick google, I just found out that Chip Berlet, the original Grand Kleagle of the SPLC, died … largely unnoticed and unmourned, this past January 30th.
RIP (…well, he dId investigate the Alan Berg murder accurately…..given him thaT.)
Hypocrisy is always the worst. The worst lies are the ones mixed with truth. Understand my metaphor!
Who ever does your art work is great. I especially liked ayatollahs in hell.
Daniel, I hope and pray you will receive your just desserts.
Having said that I am not going to hold my breath.
So many crooks, criminals and shysters are ahead of you.
All of us out here are waiting, waiting, waiting for someone, anyone to be perp walked, to be prosecuted, to be sent to prison. So far… zip, nada, zilch.
Thank you for exposing all that you do. You’ve done and continue to do exemplary work. Keep it up.
Praying fervently for you, for all of us standing for truth.
Carry on!
True Justice takes time, but will finally come to the front of the line.
I believe that God is in process of restoring what has been broken by evil persons.
I’m not clear why the mendaciously and euphemistically misnamed “Southern Poverty Law Center” has (as far as I know) never been stripped of its “Nonprofit” status; never had all of its assets seized under the Doctrine of Forfeiture as the “proceeds of crime”; never been prosecuted under RICO as a Racketeering Enterprise (which it clearly is); and why none of its employees have, so far, been prosecuted under any of the approximately 3,000 felony crimes punishable by prison sentences under 18 U.S. Code.
I’m hopeful that now, with Sessions, Barr, and Bondi gone from the DoJ, the so-called “SPLC” will be subject, harshly and immediately, to all of that.
Well said – SPLC is a RICO racket whose assets should be seized.
Now let’s take a look at the NAACP.
Amusing, isn’t it, that the NAACP now ALWAYS goes by its initials–pronounced “En Double-A See Pee,” NEVER by its full, original name and (originally legitimate) Mission: “The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.”
Similarly the UNCF, full original name and legitimate purpose “The United Negro College Fund,” is now always just “The Fund,” as their fundraising mailpieces (which I used to receive) always style the organization today.
Remember, Martin Luther King, Jr., ALWAYS referred to his own race, without flinching or embarrassment, as “Negro,” which, today, has somehow become as “offensive” and “racist” as “the N-word” itself.
Hell, I don’t object if somebody refers to my “race” as “Caucasian,” or “white” (no initial cap, please! …although “Black” is now most often used with a capital “B,” which it shouldn’t be).
It would be inaccurate (not to mention intentionally and vulgarly insulting) to refer to me as a “Polack,” a “Mick,” a “Kraut,” or a “Squarehead” based on the countries of origin of my great-grandparents, all of whom arrived (legally!) through Ellis Island in the 1880s and 1890s and were eager to EARN U.S. Citizenship.
When some overly inquisitive person asks me about the “nationality” of my surname (simplified by some immigration officer at Ellis Island from my great grandfather’s spelling of the Polish original version), I reply, “It’s American; I’m a fourth-generation, U.S.-born American Mongrel! My Registered Purebred Dachshund, Wolfgang, can trace HIS ancestry and pedigree back more than 100 generations in the Deutsche Teckelklub and AKC Stud Books, but I can only trace mine back four! Does it really matter?”
That always quickly settles the issue!
The SPLC had ONE motive – to raise money. Your second motive (to manufacture a crisis of “hate”) was the means of raising money.
If I recall, and I think I do, under Dees it was discovered that SPLC was parking its considerable money in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. It’s always been just a money making machine.
It still is. An organization that labeled Focus on the Family a terror organization is flagrantly corrupt.
I don’t want an apology, I want their destruction. They need to be de-funded, their donors exposed, and we need them to be jailed and fined out of existence, but of course they will rise up again under a different name but we will be right there to take them out. This criminal organization has been around for too long, time to go bye bye!!!!
Good point.
When Veritas exposed ACORN for the grifting, child sex-trafficking, vote fraud organization it was, it finally disbanded . . . and formed into other groups applying for tax-payer support.
The Unite The Right rally was orchestrated by the SPLC. A woman died. I hope the SPLC is held criminally liable. Front Page Magazine, Daniel Greenfield, the David Horowitz estate, and other victims should sue the SPLC.
Dear Moderator! It’s regretful how you moderate! This morning, I posted my comment (below), which first awaited moderation and then was posted. Fine. However, a few hours later, it was removed! I wonder if the author, Mr. Daniel Greenfield, approves of such a kind of moderation!
Surprising? Not at all! Yet this article slightly smears a quite legitimate and absolutely necessary white nationalism (one of many legitimate nationalisms). I have written the “White manifesto” and stand for preservation of the white race – because the whites also have a right for self-preservation in their nations, comprising now only 8-15% of the world population. Nobody financed me, nor do I need it.
SPLC financed factions that distorted white nationalism, fanned it, and discredited it!
Another example. First, I was inspired when I finally discovered the organizers of a Straight Pride parade. However, on closer look, it turned out to be a vile anti-Semite.
Do you see a pattern? Somebody inserts despicable “plants” into the very needed legitimate causes in order to discredit them. This way, somebody protects from criticism the dearest vokerati pet ideas – and simultaneously vilifies the conservative and traditional values.
When decent people shun off and silence an inconvenient truth, then it is the evildoers who pick it up and weaponize it for their evil purposes.
I’ve had several posts “moderated” into irrelevancy; some only finally showing at the end of the day.
“Biden” + the Russian grammar rendered in English. Hmm…are you sure you’re not a psychologically displaced Russian Jew overcompensating for your alienation right here in the pages of FPM?
I do wish FPMs comment section had an “edit” function.
“Biden” above was supposed to be “Gofen”.
Anyhow, Mr. Gofen sounds unhinged.
34yr retired cop here. The SPLC sent their mag to anyone who asked.
I had access to one..
Virtually NO, non-white “”racist” groups were dotted on the back page map.
Christian’s. Pro-Isreal. Anti-abor.tionist. Motorcycle gangs. Anti illegal-immigration were always found there.
To emphasize. Nearly NO black supremacy, or other “non-white” groups were mentioned.
Jessie. Sharpton. Farrahkan. Violent racist gangs were rarely; actually, really, not listed.
The black panther type voter intimidation gang in Philadelphia? Unmentioned.
The SPLC is a phoney “racist protection”, or whatever you call it, club.
I pray to read, “Good Ridence SPLC”.
I knew 100% the SPLC were frauds the first moment I heard of them. It was obvious. I’m sure the entire GOP including past Republican presidents knew about it as well yet did nothing.
Don’tcha love it when sacred cows of the left fall? This should have happened several decades ago. Apparently Bidens “DOJ” was investigating but they dropped the case.
Anyone surprised?
That Biden’s DOJ even investigated says the crimes were blatant and serious.
And looking forward to some sort of justice……won’t hold my breath….those responsible are most likely people of color and will STILL be held as a privileged group…
Let me know when someone is jailed or even prosecuted.
When the Family Research Council and Turning Point USA are “hate groups,” there can be no doubt what SPLC is. That SPLC keeps hundreds of millions in offshore accounts tells you all you need to know about its honesty and intent.
From early on they were parking their money offshore in shady banks, a suspicious sign.
What brand of gun oil? This is a great endorsement for buying it.
Silver Bullet Gun Oil
The leftist media is already making excuses for this evil, life-wrecking organization. Why am I not surprised.
No Daniel. It isn’t time for the SPLC to apologize. It’s time for the SPLC to be sued out of existence.
Having watched the SPLC antics for decades it was obvious they were acting like the FBI setting up straw dogs with which to manipulate funding and narratives. Finally, we may get some justice.
They should never be forgiven for what they did to an Arizona border rancher several years ago who lost his ranch to a couple illegal aliens who had killled a steer to eat. It was reported he brought the private property tresspassing crooks to his house, tied them to a couple chairs, fed them milk and cookies and lambasted them a few times. Then the SPLC too the side of the illegal aliens, litigated the poor rancher, and won.
The “victory” was his ranch was gifted to those two illegal aliens. The rancher was forced off his property and had to rent a small, old residence up north.
SPLC headquarters merits being occupied by some of the Soros/Singham rioters in MN who were trained alongside the two violent rioters who attacked ICE agents doing their job and lost their miserable dispicable lives fighting ICE agents trying to do their job description.
Hang ’em high!
Just want to add my voice to those who don’t want an apology, but a tear down of SPLC. Empty their bank account(s). Prosecute. Retroactively remove their tax status and go tax the money from the donors. As it turns out, Somalians aren’t the only ones who’ve been running multi-million-dollar rip offs, but destruction SPLC has wreaked on the innocent make them many times worse.
It’s modern Mau Mauing. Read Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers by Tom Wolfe. It hasn’t changed, just metastasized.
The funniest part – they keep saying they hired undercover operatives to infiltrate the KKK. But they are not even being prosecuted for paying Klan members, they are being prosecuted for bank fraud, money laundering, and wire fraud. They created fictious entities and bank accounts. Made numerous false statements. Created fake IDs. They also materially facilitated the hate groups – purchasing materials specifically for use in crimes.
You can pay an informant as a private individual. You can even hire a private detective to investigate. But your check, from you to the informant, or the detective agency, must be legit. You can’t create a false identity and present that to a bank to facilitate payments to such an informant. That is bank fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. You also can’t have your informant provide the guns to commit felonies – you become an accessory to the crime.
Only the government gets to create fake IDSs and bank accounts. because the purpose is to prosecute the criminals. The purpose of the SPLC is to add another dot to its hate map, and gin up additional donations.
All stories require a hero and a villain. If the hero defeats the villain then the story is over – and so is the employment. The only way to have permanent employment is for the hero to reach an agreement with the villain to keep the battle going without end. Then both remain employed.
Or you can confer hereditary victimhood, like UNRWA.
Saul Alinsky would be so proud. That’s the oldest commie trick in the book. That is how they convinced everyone that Republicans were the racists. He sent people dressed as clansmen to speeches like Bush Sr.’s and had them cheer for him.
FPM used to have one of the most user friendly comment boards on all the net. It may have been associated with Disqus. Then, quite suddenly, it was gone, and FPM was forced to develop a new comment platform that I believe became this one that doesn’t have the features Disqus has. As I recall, this all happened because SPLC did a ‘Hate Site’ evaluation of FPM that resulted in FPM being deplatformed from Disqus. Am I mistaken in remembering it happening in just this way. Couldn’t FPM sue SPLC for this scurrilous attack?
The SPLC are complicit in the killing of Charlie Kirk, and should be co-indicted as such.
with all the feigned outrage it will be interesting to see how long it lasts . just like the russia collusion crowd , no one will go to jail . while the j6 crowd rot in jail and all those that were in the vicinity had their lives ruined . how did they know where they were on the day . the bank of america traced them through their credit cards and passed them onto the fbi and cia . the banks know all about splc and have remained mum . because they know a good business model when they see one and they are there to make money by hook or by crook . i will know there is justice in america when these shysters are in jail . in the meantime i wont be holding my breath .
Dear Mr. Greenfield,
The worse the insulter, the higher the honor of the insult.
