[Order Michael Finch’s new book, A Time to Stand: HERE. Prof. Jason Hill calls it “an aesthetic and political tour de force.”]
Two things are clear wins for Netanyahu. First, it is not the Palestinian Authority, but a group of Arab technocrats who will take over running Gaza after Hamas surrenders. Whether or not such people can actually be found is a different matter, but at very least, the plan does not allow for an extension of the Palestinian Authority’s corrupt rule.
Second, while a possible Palestinian state might appear in the future, that possibility is hedged in with doubts, that it is likely to never come to pass. Here is the relevant paragraph from the 20-point deal: “While Gaza re-development advances and when the PA reform program is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognise as the aspiration of the Palestinian people.”
How long will it take to redevelop Gaza? How many years just to remove the rubble before rebuilding can begin? And what about the “reform”of the PA that will also take a long time, to remove the PA’s thoroughly corrupt leadership, beginning with Mahmoud Abbas, who, with his sons Yasser and Tareq has amassed a family fortune of some $400 million? Abbas also allows his loyal courtiers to help themselves to millions of dollars in aid. How many years will it take to “reform” this endemic corruption? The PA hasn’t held an election since 2006. How long would it now take it to organize a free and fair election, one in which no Hamas members could run, when the PA has no experience of holding such an election in the last nineteen years?
Note the tone of doubt: “When the PA reform program is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognise as the aspiration of the Palestinian people.”
Will that and reform program be “faithfully carried out”? Will the PA change its ways when its entire history has been one of corruption by its leaders, and of rewarding past and incentivizing future terrorism through its “Pay-For-Slay” program that Abbas has sworn to continue? Note that a “credible pathway may finally be in place” — not “will be in place,” but only “may be in place for a credible pathway…to statehood” — again a deliberate phrasing that suggests a long time line, and expresses doubt with that phrase “may be” rather than “will be.”
All along the way there are many conditions placed on both Hamas and Palestinians, which may not be met, from Hamas members refusing to “decommission” their weapons, that is, to turn them in peacefully, or the Palestinian Authority showing itself unable to run an election that is free nor fair, that will relieve Israel of the pressure to agree to the creation of a Palestinian state. The Israelis can be sure that neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority will uphold all their part of the bargain (assuming that Hamas accepts the deal). The “reform of the PA” will not halt the massive corruption that characterizes the PA, and an election held under PA auspices for a new government in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, is bound to have ballot-box stuffing in favor of the PA’s candidates. So for now, Israel need not worry that from this deal a Palestinian state will emerge. It won’t happen.

the aspirations of the palestinian people, who just cheered rockets launched at israel tonight, is to kill Jews, end Israel and raise their children to be martyrs who kill Jews. The deal is a lie. The so-called palestinians have no aspirations to have two states for two peoples living peacefully beside one another. Creating a state that wants to genocide its neighbor is bizarre. .
Its shocking and duplicitous to place those word in a deal.
agreed 100%. stop the genocidal fakestinian lie. i don’t know what the hell happened but trump needs to stop this witkof bullshiz. this whole thing is insane. the land belongs to israel and the Jews. trump needs to read the Torah. Gd help us
What is the obsession with “rebuilding” this terror entity when so many ruined areas worldwide – ruined by MUSLIMS – are far more deserving??
Has it not escaped international notice that the entire Arab world hates the Palestinians? No country wants them. Fortunately, we Jews have a state and armed forces to make sure Hebron does not repeat. Sadly, with all we have October 7 still occurred and who is to say it will not reoccur.
Its not that they literally hate them though they might. They just WANT them right where they are to attack Israel and to smear Israel with their supposed oppression (yes, by “white colonial Israel” who only 80 years ago, we were characterized as too non white for German society and as dark monkeys, etc.) .
The Arab world and the EU Muslim countries like UK and France want the war between Gazans and Jews until all Jews are exterminated and Israel gone. Sorry, we cannot oblige.
You have no protection because of your suicidal left
For anyone to view Hamas or the PA reforming to accommodate a secure Jewish state is not only absurd, it is also a willingness to deny years and years of their malevolent duplicity and murder of the Jewish people in Israel.
I read yesterday that Hamas has already nuked the deal.
This is excruciating but nevertheless Netanyahu cannot put all Israelis in harms way for the foreseeable future by negotiating primarily for the hostages return.
It is a very horrifying reality that the years of leftist, conciliatory behavior toward the Gaza problem and Hamas, has allowed for both hostage taking and the release of Hamas prisoners who have repeatedly returned and murdered more Israelis. Yahya Sinwar, the architect of October 7, was one of those prisoners previously released. How is it this can be morally justified in order to get back 48 hostages, 20 of whom are still alive? By the former release of Sinwar alone, we have the slaughter of 1200 innocents and the capture of 251 to Gaza.
Hamas knows their survival is predicated on Israel sacrificing itself on the altar of the hostages and they have maximized their curated propaganda at intervals assuring the leftist outage for getting them back.
Additionally, who in the hell is Trump to dictate the prevention of Israel taking back Judea and Samaria? It’s NOT THE WEST BANK. And, why did Trump provide Middle Eastern nations with info about this deal before Netanyahu? And, furthermore just how much loyalty does Trump really have to Israel when he is negotiating multi-million dollar business deal with Qatar and talking about providing Qatar with NATO type security??
Something is truly out-of-order when Netanyahu was mandated by Trump to call and apologize to Qatar for bombing Doha. In Middle Eastern protocol, Trump made Netanyahu humiliate himself and Israel…why?
Nothing about this deal seems primarily designed for Israel’s current and future security so what the hell is really going on here?
It’s looking like Trump was willing to sacrifice Israel for business deals in the Middle East under the guise of a strategic kind of peace through business?
Trump is being played by a level of duplicity he has still yet to recognize and Israel should not be the victim of his stupidity.
Excellent post.
Gabrielle – The Middle East is a hellpit on Earth. It’s a bunch of
of Muslim countries committed to killing Israeli and all Jews –
all Christians – and subjugating the rest of the entire world for
Islam. Fanatically savage and brutal in this quest, they are also
always smiling, scheming and trying to be sophisticated and
un-seventh century. With the partnership of Globalist Communists,
they have damn near conquered Europe and are making serious
inroads in America.
Into this boiling mess comes Trump to give some assistance to
Jewish tiny Israel. He is doing it, as you say, by Peace Through
Business. In an ideal world, the Muslim nations should be confronted
by him for their anti-Jewish, anti-Christian and anti-humanity beliefs.
But this is the real world and risking their uniting to attack Israel –
especially in alignment with our enemies China and Russia – rather
than working with her in business negotiations is not a risk to take.
Especially now, when America has been weakened horribly by the
Globalists and Trump is trying to make us strong and safe again.
Trump must pay attention to America first and then Israel which is
what he is doing. You would have him be confrontational to Muslim
countries – which at this point of the world’s battle with Islam – is not
the smartest move to make. Strategy and patience in the long term
is called for now – something the Globalists and Islamists excel at.
I see the perils of making Muslim nations strong through business. I
also see President Trump doesn’t really have much of a choice if there
is to be at least some temporary peace for now among the savage
nations and Israel in the Middle East. I do not believe Trump is being
played by these Muslim monsters. I believe he is playing them – in
this ongoing permanent war between civilization and Islam.
Death to Islam! MAGA! Long Live Israel and God Bless America.
I see no reason for anyone to get upset over parts of this proposal. This is not going to materialize into a deal.
Hopefully stick to hard deadline for the terrorists attacking Israel. I don’t really think you can make deals with musselmans nor chicoms Hope it works out though.
I agree, with a few reservations, with Fitzgerald here. The blather about Palestinian statehood is pretty weak tea for the “aspirations” of the Gazan’s and other assorted heathen. This twenty-one point agreement is pretty close to a real deal, but as you say people have to insist on a hard limit. This is the weakest part of the whole process. Sticking to a deadline — one minute past its midnight and it becomes a pumpkin.
Hamas and their immediate family are the most intransigent people on Earth. Make a concession about the time limit and moving Gibraltar would be an easier task than getting to finality.
1. my hope i Hamas won’t agree
2. besides: the proposal doesn’t say a word about all the rest of Iranian proxies – what about them?
3. only solution (that i can agree it would be a solution) is relocation, as done in the past (WWII millions of Germans), after Greek-Turkey war 1923 – and it worked
As of now, Hamas is doing what they to best ~ delaying and offering excuses as to why things are delayed… it will take months to find the hostages, don’t you know? Meanwhile, Israel continues to capitulate. Stopped fighting, pulling back, etc. And Trump’s next round of bravado proved as empty as it has in the past. It’s utterly degrading to witness this unfold.
