Don’t miss it!

I can’t help saying this after listening to this speech by way of “tooting my horn” (sorry!) I insisted on an art history course in American Art History in the 1960s, when I was a young and new academic at a small college in central Illinois. I didn’t realize at the time how counter-intuitive such a move was, except that my colleague couldn’t understand why anyone would want to teach that. I was not particularly political-ideological at the time, but it just seemed a natural thing to do and noticed an absence in the art history curriculum. I continued the same innovation when I moved on to teach at another small college in Nebraska in 1970. So, contrary to what he experienced, somebody was doing it, although perhaps in obscure quarters of the academic world.
