The world’s media have for months been proclaiming that Gaza is “on the brink of famine,”and that Israel is deliberately preventing food from entering the Strip, that thousands of Gazans are dying of malnutrition. But there is not now, and never has been, a “famine” in Gaza. There is, however, a problem with the distribution of food, because once the food trucks enter Gaza, Hamas operatives have been seizing much of the aid for themselves, their extended families, and fellow Hamas members, than is their due. That misallocation is a different thing. And even with those seizures, enough food is left over to ensure that ordinary Gazans do not suffer “famine.”
More on the “famine” that never was can be found here: “Experts: ICC, UN blamed Israel for a famine that never happened in Gaza – exclusive,” by Seth J. Frantzman, Jerusalem Post, June 18, 2024:
Columbia University Professors Awi Federgruen and Ran Kivetz have analyzed available data and conducted research whose “findings demonstrate that sufficient amounts of food are being supplied into Gaza,” they noted in a summary of their findings presented to The Jerusalem Post.
They note that it is “a myth that Israel is responsible for famine in Gaza.” They argue that the International Criminal Court and UN have joined Hamas in blaming Israel for a “famine that never was, hoping to stop the war [in Gaza].”
The two professors spoke to the Post in early June and they provided an abstract and details about their findings regarding the issue of famine in Gaza.
Professor Awi Federgruen is the Chair of Columbia University Business School’s Decision, Risk and Operations Division. He is an expert in supply chains, logistics, and data science. Ran Kivetz is the Philip H. Geier Professor at Columbia University Business School. He is an expert in decision making, including the intersection between behavioral economics and political science.
The two experts noted that the ICC has sought arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The ICC claimed that Israel is “causing starvation as a method of war including the denial of humanitarian relief supplies [and] deliberately targeting civilians in conflict,” they note in their abstract. The two professors dispute this.
They examined the “hard data, available from such sources as COGAT [Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories] and the UN,” they note. Federgruen and Kivetz’s research and findings demonstrate that sufficient amounts of food are being supplied into Gaza. According to their research they “demonstrate that 250 truckloads suffice to feed the entire Gazan population, in accordance with a normal diet in North America.”
Hamas fired rockets at the Kerem Shalom crossing on May 5, killing five soldiers and causing the border to be shut briefly. However, the supplies have resumed since then. “Israel intends to increase it further to the 400-500 truck/day level. Further, Israel regularly halts offensives for 4 hours a day to facilitate these deliveries,” they note….
Israel has now announced that it will call a halt to all military activities during a daily pause in fighting between 8:00 and 19:00 local time — that is, for 11 hours every day — along a key route running north from the Kerem Shalom crossing point, where aid is waiting to be delivered. Israel has continued to let in hundreds of truckloads of food each day — now up to 350, a figure which the IDF is working to increase to 500 aid trucks a day — through both the Kerem Shalom and Erez Crossings. Food could also come through the Rafah crossing, but Egypt — not Israel —insists on keeping that crossing closed. Both the Israelis and the Americans have tried, so far to no avail, to persuade Egypt to open the Rafah crossing to aid trucks.
Is it too much to ask reporters, instead of repeating without any investigation the claims that there has been, or there is about to be, a “famine” in Gaza, that they examine the COGAT and UN data? We keep hearing about a “famine” that is about to take place in Gaza, but it never happens. And there is even less of a chance of it occurring now that about 350 trucks laden with food are now entering Gaza every day loaded with food.
The meticulous studies showing that there is no famine won’t stop much the world’s media from continuing to blame Israel for a nonexistent “famine” in Gaza. But some may be shamed into looking at the data compiled by experts in food security and nutrition, and begin to report on exactly how much aid has been entering Gaza, thanks to Israel, and noting that it is Hamas operatives who have been seizing aid off the trucks, taking far more than they deserve. Meanwhile, the total deaths reported from “famine” in all of Gaza, over the eight months of this war, come to 37, or about one death a week, out of a population of 2.2 million. That is many times fewer per capita than those who die of hunger every day in the United States. Keep all that in mind, as you read these hysterical accounts of the “famine” in Gaza.
Sadly there are many who will choose to believe the media and not the truth. Why? well they will believe anything and everything that places the Jews in a bad light even if it means supporting Muslims and terrorists.
Just more ways they can fool us into giving them More Food to keep their Fearless Leaders well Fed or Ham-A** Radicals
Very defensive discussion.
We read that “ 11 hour pause” was not approved nor implemented. Hopefully not! . Now you write it was. A country cannot fight a war effectively while supplying food to the enemy who attacked first slaughtering innocent civilians. So who supplies Israelis with food so they don’t starve ? And other needs such as homes that are safe from attack? It’s never questioned why Israel is responsible for Gaza’s Hamas supporting population who held hostages as slaves in their homes !! These are the very civilians discussed so defensively.
So people may not be “ starved” but people may be raped to death. butchered alive, burned alive, beheaded. And held hostage indefinitely. Btw, how well are the hostages fed? No comment, aye?
Such unequal rules are, on face, too immoral to discuss.
this incident was allowed to happen by the IDF
This is the most hilarious war I have ever seen. Palestine is a vassal state of Israel and when I go back to history I never seen anything like this before. Israel has a say in Palestinian politics so why did they let hamas seize power. Hamas and Israel are buddies and the only true losers are the Palestinian and Israeli citizens. They are made to play to this dangerous game so the Arabs and jews hate each other and their respective governments will attack each other’s citizens so they can hold on to power. They are trying to start a war between the Arab world and Israel. This must not happen because it will quickly escalate to a world war.
Could you get the history between Israel and Hamas more wrong? Or do you just hate Jews that much?
Lol so if I say anything wrong about Israel equals I hate Jews. You’re a moron but hey if you can’t believe Israel created hamas than I am sorry for you. There is no such thing as good governments even if its Jewish the second you blindly trust then that’s when garbage like this happens. Ron Paul explains to congress how Israel created hamas for more power. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zgy6B_QOYAM
Also a little research you can figure this out. Screw Hamas and screw Israel.
Prior to Oct 7 the Israeli government had largely fallen for the idea that if they were nice to Hamas and supported Gaza economically with work visas, Hamas would mostly restrict themselves to grandiose rhetoric without seriously endangering Israel. After all, that would have been the rational thing for Hamas to do (by Western standards at least). Instead, it turned out that Hamas really does prioritize killing Jews over any other consideration. Now Israel has been enlightened and is dealing with the fallout.
Yes they prioritize killing jews above everything else with the blessing of Israel. Hamas leadership is doing well while the Palestinian idiots who supported them are f’ed. Hamas is controlled opposition to push an agenda forward.
If you INSIST there were “Palestinian Kings” in their history, wouldn’t they be named, oh, I don’t know, “King David” Or “King Solomon”? After all, the Hebrews, post Roman Emperor Hadrian, WERE called “Palestinian”, but they were Hebrew. Palestinians today are Hashemite Arabs which Jordan became their “Nation” and from which their “Kings” and Language comes. How interesting their “First King”, tracing back to the “founding” of recent “Palestine (by the KGB), was Arafat, an Egyptian! Gaza, in fact, should probably be a province of Jordan. As for a “State” of their own, does it not occur to anyone that after Israel evacuated ALL Jewish presents from Gaza, all the “Gazans” needed do was re-name it “Palestine”, problem solved. But the “problem will NEVER be fixed in the here-and-now, because it is a Spiritual problem. Hatred of the Judeo-Christian God, and the “Apple of God’s eye, Israel”.
You know jews Muslims and Christians believe in the same God. I have no problem with Israel just their government. They are not special because all governments no matter what they believe will get extremely corrupted if left unchecked. Israel is not the apple of God’s eye, America is! One more thing if Palestinian’s wanted a two state solution it would have happened but Israel nor it’s Palestinian puppets will ever agree. It’s all show.
no one dies of hunger in the US since at least the 1950s unless they are physically or mentally prevented from accessing food
you can tell the Pali food crisis is fake because Egypt is refusing to let aid through while the Israelis control the border
Lol the Arab states are shifty hypocrites.
All death, destruction and suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza is the fault and responsibility of the Palestinians themselves.
All of it.
If the Palestinians want to end their suffering they only have to do the following:
1. Stop trying to destroy Israel.
2. Stop killing Jews.
3. Release all of the hostages.
The war ends.
Apparently this is to much for them to even consider.
The Palestinians believe that they have the right to attack Israel and kill, rape and kidnap as many Jews as they can whenever they wish.
They also believe that they should suffer no adverse consequences as a result of these actions.
They may be correct on the first belief. They can commit these atrocities if they wish. No one can make the Palestinians behave in a civilized manner.
They are incorrect on the second.
The Biden/Austin/Milley $320,000,000 naval porta port was impressive.
Unfortunately, in the wrong direction.
Israel is sending enough food into Gaza to provide each resident over 3000 calories per day. That’s more than the average American eats. Plus, when has anyone EVER heard of a country being required to feed the citizens of an entity that attacked it? Yet, the U.S. and “world community” continually complain Israel isn’t doing enough. Everything in this country is insane and the rot stems right from the White House.
Maybe aid suppliers should look at foods that work for the general population, but are less useful for soldiers – for example, items that require significant amounts of time for preparation, or pulses which need overnight soaking before use.
