The establishment clause prevented a national religion as was the rule in Europe. America was founded upon Anglo protestantism, which ALONE could have embraced a “brotherhood of believers” among Christian brethren of different denominations. This was the freedom of religion envisioned by the founders. The early states all had their own constitutions and established religions – all of them Christian of various stripes.

The Supreme Court uses the 3-factor “Lemon Test” to determine whether the Establishment Clause has been violated:
“First, the statute must have a secular legislative purpose; second, its principal or primary effect must be one that neither advances nor inhibits religion; finally, the statute must not foster an excessive entanglement with religion.” Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971).
Lemon fails to recognize the inveterate religiosity of humanity, yet gives priority to the religion of secular humanism. Secular humanism creates the proverbial vacuum which [human] nature abhors. Thus all the awful -isms rush in to fill the vacuum and hasten our demise all in the name of “freedom.”
Protestant Christianity ALONE gave priority to the individual conscience in matters of religion, but individual conscience joined to privileged secular humanism eventually produces all the -isms we suffer today.
