While the United States doesn’t have national health care, between Medicare and Medicaid, the government is funding the purchase of huge amounts of medications, more than enough to allow us to negotiate lower drug prices. The opposition to doing so has largely been about free market concerns, but if we had a free market, we wouldn’t also be funding a sizable amount of the country’s drug purchases.
The Trump administration’s Foreign First pricing approach doesn’t directly leverage that government buying power, instead it’s setting out to push large drug companies into matching comparable prices in some other unstated countries. Presumably western countries with nationalized health care and negotiating power.
It’s an end run around direct negotiations and we’ll see how effective it will be.
President Trump suggested that countries that “need extra help” will be excluded which means don’t expect drug prices to fall to the levels of African countries. And that means we’ll still be subsidizing much of the world.
Drug prices may fall somewhat, but since we’ll be largely competing with other Western or First World nations, drug companies will just use this as leverage to raise prices there, rather than lowering prices here.
To create meaningful change and get truly better rdeals, we need to leverage federal buying power to get better deals and we need to stop subsidizing drug prices for the rest of the world, not just Canada or the UK.
Get rid of Medicare and Medicaid even illegal aliens are getting them.
Trump stole a play from the Democrats’ Big Government Playbook when he successfully demonized DeSantis after DeSantis suggested it, accurately, that it was necessary to address the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare.
So what if we stick it to our children and grandchildren!
If–IF–Trump’s proposed plans for drugs ends up reducing R&D. The cost of that will also be paid in the long run.
That’s probably yet another example of how Oligarchs are scamming the government.
and that’s why the UN/CFR/DNC/Globalists oppose anything by Trump
Drug prices went down significantly today. Just one day and President Trump produced results.
He wants to have America start making drugs and medicine again. Who trusts China? Not even the Slants.
Thanks Jeff !!! That reminded me: back when Hong Kong was still British, we had a good friend from Hong Kong who was a student at Berkeley. I was trying to be a smart Aleck so made a joke about “what happens when the ChiComs take over Hong Kong?” My friend got very serious and gave a serious answer, he was fully aware of the situation. They are fully aware of how bad the ChiComs are. Anyway that taught me to be more sensitive to others feelings when cracking stupid jokes 🙂
I’ve been to Hong Kong. Sweaty as the pits of Hell. It’s a shame those STUPID Brits gave it to China. They ruined it in no time flat.
You’re right about considering the feelings of other people, though.
And just like that those congress critters owned by Big Pharma push back against Trump. Thune opposes codifying Trump’s drug plan.
Trump again shows how the US has been supporting the world. American high drug prices are what allow the EU and Canada to have low cost medicine. Trump is right to take care of Americans first. He is showing us that it was money going to everyone but US citizens as the main reason programs like S.S. and Medicare were being shorted. Politicians should have term limits and the same benefits as you and I. No gold plated benefits nor outrageous salary, like they now have.
Nice to have a President that is fixing problems rather than creating problems.
