I made this distinction in an article earlier this week.
There’s a big difference between political scandals involving people in politics and ordinary people. That’s why Ben Shapiro and Jonah Goldberg are wrong to describe the criticism of the New York Times for hiring Sarah Jeong, a blogger with a history of making racist comments about white people, as social media mobbing.
It’s not.
It’s legitimate to criticize a major media organization for hiring a racist and engaging in double standards. Opposing social media mobs doesn’t mean abandoning any criticism of anyone or anything ever.
There’s also a huge difference between criticizing an organization and harassing an individual on Twitter.
The two things are not the same. And conservatives who confuse them show their own failure to articulate what is wrong about leftist behavior.
