GA Teacher Claims Confederate Flag Shows Intent to 'Marry Your Sister'
“Think of it like a white trash 'Save the Date' card.”
The Confederate Flag is a complicated symbol that has come to mean different things to different people. But according to a high school teacher in Georgia, displaying the Confederate Flag signifies a person’s status as “white trash” and an intent to “marry your sister.”
The teacher at Hephzibah High School located near Augusta, Georgia, displayed an image of the Confederate Flag on a white board in her classroom accompanied by a caption stating, “A sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash 'Save the Date' card.”
When a student in the class informed her mother about the controversial caption, the mother took to social media to ask other parents to weigh in. The response, unsurprisingly, was overwhelmingly negative.
"She found it offensive, so she sent it to me and asked me what I thought," explained Melissa Fuller, the mother whose social media posting brought the controversy to public attention.
"With it being such a rough area, why would you put that our there to a class discussion that could have turned very ugly?" she asked.
Fuller revealed to a local news station that her daughter had once worn a Confederate Flag belt buckle to school, but was instructed to remove it and then faced an in-school suspension as well.
"If she can't wear that belt buckle, then why is it appropriate to make an assignment out of it?" Fuller asked.
Since the controversy has gone public, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave. The Richmond County School System did not release the teacher’s name, but did issue a statement claiming to be “committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for all students." "The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms,” it added.
