The United Nations, as I’ve said many times, is a democracy of dictatorships. It has the same legitimacy as any dictatorship as farces like this showcase.
China’s Foreign Ministry and state media declared victory after 53 countries backed Beijing’s new national security law for Hong Kong. Just 27 criticized the law, which imposes harsh penalties for vaguely defined political crimes and is widely viewed as the death knell for Hong Kong’s autonomy.
In the room: The two statements were read back to back in Tuesday’s session, with Cuba supporting China and the U.K. representing the critics.
Supporting: China, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahrain, Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominica, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Syria, Tajikistan, Togo, UAE, Venezuela, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The list isn’t exactly surprising. It’s the same collection of Third World garbage that destroyed the UN’s credibility when they put themselves at the service of the Communist bloc.
Why be surprised that the same UN that booted out Taiwan and replaced it with Communist China is still at it.
The pro-China statement comes from Cuba and is really extraordinary. “In any country, the legislative power on national security issues rests with State, which in essence is not a human rights issue and therefore not subject to discussion at the Human Rights Council,” it claims.
National security is not a human rights issue? That would be an interesting precedent if it were maintained consistently with the HRC’s approach to America or Israel.
Meanwhile, do the Left’s Cuba lovers have anything to say about the statement? A truly independent media might ask Rep. Karen Bass or Senator Bernie Sanders what they think of it.
