Since Jan 6, Democrats found only two police departments and only two groups of police officers they’re willing to support: Capitol Hill officers and D.C.’s MPD officers. It goes without saying that they don’t care about the police officers except for propaganda purposes. And that lack of context means treating every Capitol or MPD officer suicide as a major story.

While it’s nice that Dems and their media have briefly decided to care about some LEO suicides when it fits their agenda, police officers in urban departments, like active-duty combat soldiers, have high suicide rates.

Take New York’s NYPD.

NYPD officers were killing themselves in record numbers as the department tried to figure out how to stop it in 1994, when a record 12 cops took their own lives. That surpassed the previous record of 10, set in 1987. Now the number has reached double-digits again in 2019…

In a September report, the city Department of Investigation found the suicide rate for uniformed NYPD personnel, at about 13.8 per 100,000 people, is more than double the rate for the city’s general population.

The numbers were bad across the country.

In 2019, 228 current or former officers died by suicide, compared with 172 in 2018, the group announced on Thursday.

Blue H.E.L.P.’s own lists are not complete. Their numbers are self-submitted and they only post names with permission, but their numbers are still high with 87 police officers having killed themselves in 2021 so far and 174 last year.

It’s hard to know what exactly drives suicide rates, but obviously PTSD and stress are factors. I don’t imagine that the Capitol riot helped in that regard, but the Black Lives Matter riots certainly didn’t and Democrats and their media have ignored the hundreds of officers injured in those riots. Not to mention the death of Captain David Dorn. Working a major city is a stressful job even without riots and political hate campaigns. Some officers end up on the front lines of the worst that the world has to offer. It’s demoralizing and leads to bad habits. 

It’s hard to be sure what exactly makes someone commit suicide and while a single stressful event may be the issue, it’s just as often a variety of factors that lead a person to a sense of despair. 

The issue of police suicides has largely been buried by Democrats and a media which hates police officers until it needs them.

As Kipling wrote about soldiers some time ago, “For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an` Chuck him out, the brute! But it’s ‘Saviour of ‘is country’  when the guns begin to shoot; An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please; An ‘Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool – you bet that Tommy sees!”
