In Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, an Afghan refugee was arrested for molesting two underage teens and another Afghan refugee for beating his wife. In Fort Bliss, in Texas, a female service member was attacked by Afghan refugees.

Now we’ve got the first report of an Afghan refugee on the loose being arrested for rape. In Montana.

An Afghan evacuee has been charged with the rape of a woman in Missoula, Montana, the state’s governor said Thursday – and he called for the Biden administration to halt all refugee resettlements until assurances are made about the vetting process.

Gov. Greg Gianforte’s office said in a statement that an Afghan male placed in Montana by the U.S. State Department was charged with sexual assault. 

The Missoula Police Department told Fox that Zabihullah Muhmand was arrested after they received a 911 call from the victim and a local motel about concerning behavior. Muhmand, 19, is now being held at the Missoula County Jail on charges of sexual intercourse without consent and the case is being investigated by detectives – but did not confirm his evacuee status. 

The local NBC affiliate however has confirmed that Muhmand had been resettled in Montana.

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services confirms to NBC Montana that an Afghan man arrested last weekend in Missoula is here as part of a federal resettlement program.

Jon Ebelt with DPHHS says Zabihullah Mohmand, 19, “was placed in Montana as part of the federal Afghan Placement and Assistance Program.”

“DPHHS manages the Montana State Refugee Program. As such, this program is working with individuals arriving in Montana as part of the Afghan Placement and Assistance Program. As of today, 20 individuals (combination of adults and children) are in Montana (Missoula) as part of the Afghan Placement and Assistance Program. This is since late September. To be clear, federal agencies are responsible for the vetting process prior to their arrival,” Ebelt told NBC Montana in an email.

What vetting? How do you even begin to vet for this sort of thing in a culture where women are expected to remain at home, leave only when accompanied by a husband or brother, or be seen as fair game? There’s no vetting that’s going to cover this.

Senate Republicans should have resisted any Afghan refugee evacuations of non-American citizens. Instead, they got caught up in the “interpreter myth” with disastrous results. And that’s how Afghans end up being resettled in Montana.
