I call on Russians to demonstrate their resistance by writing the name “Alexei Navalny” on their ballot papers on March 17, in tribute to the regime’s latest and most prominent victim.
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was a heroic opponent to President Vladimir Putin, and he has paid the ultimate price. Putin murdered Navalny.
We salute Navalny’s courage and condemn the cowardice of his murderer — a leader so weak, he cannot tolerate any real opposition to his rule. Now Putin has Navalny’s blood on his hands, as he has the blood of so many before him.
Let this be a wake-up call to the world — not that one should have been needed: Putin’s murderous regime is illegitimate and should be treated as such.
Putin perpetrated this sickening murder one month before the sham officially known as the “Russian presidential election” takes place. Elections in Russia are neither free nor fair. Any genuine opponent to Putin is banned from running, if they haven’t been imprisoned, forced into exile or, as the fate of Navalny makes so tragically clear, killed.
The West must stop indulging this charade and declare this election and its result illegitimate. The last time a “Russian presidential election” took place, the West’s response was weakness and appeasement.
I hope it does not repeat the same mistakes.
To no one’s surprise, that election, held in March 2018, delivered the usual result. Putin won a handsome majority — though smaller than in more traditional dictatorships — as he comfortably bested a couple of stuffed suits from the more ludicrous ends of Russia’s political spectrum.
As such, it was the usual charade, but what differed and warranted a firmer response from the West was that Putin also conducted the “election” in Ukrainian territory it had forcibly annexed — namely, Crimea.
So, how did the world respond to this violation of a neighbor’s sovereignty? U.S. President Donald Trump made a congratulatory phone call, as did then European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. France and Germany avoided using the word “congratulate,” but wished Putin success in his next six years in office. And then, the world traveled to Russia for the football World Cup, the 21st century equivalent of the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Six years on, during which Putin has unleashed hell on Ukraine, plunged the world into turmoil and now murdered a prominent opponent, how will the West respond this time?
As it stands, Putin is poised to force parts of Ukraine, which were occupied through a genocidal war of aggression, to take part in his predetermined re-election. Moreover, the Russian leader is now wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court, notably for the kidnapping of Ukrainian children. These reasons alone were already sufficient to declare this election — and his rule — illegitimate.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) had the right idea last October, recognizing “Putin as illegitimate after the end of his current presidential term” and “ceas[ing] all contact with him, except for humanitarian contact and in the pursuit of peace.”
I question whether any contact with Putin could help bring about the pursuit of peace — only stronger military backing for Ukraine will do that. Furthermore, I do not believe sustainable peace will be possible as long as his crooked regime remains in power. He is a danger to the world. Nevertheless, I welcome PACE’s resolution and call on others to follow suit.
Putin has effectively declared himself dictator for life. In 2020, the Duma — Russia’s obedient assembly — changed the country’s constitution to lift its presidential term limit. And in response, the 2021 European Parliament Resolution on the direction of EU-Russia political relations clearly stated that “the EU should condemn any attempt by President Putin to remain in office beyond the end of his current and final presidential mandate on 7th May 2024 on the basis of the 2020 constitutional amendments, which Parliament has assessed as ‘illegally enacted.’”
It’s now time to see what this means in practice.
Putin will never leave office voluntarily, and the Russian people are being denied any real alternative. Navalny has now been murdered. Other opponents, such as Vladimir Kara-Murza — who was the subject of poisoning attacks in 2015 and 2017, as Navalny was in 2020 — are in prison. And organizations like Open Russia, which I cofounded to engage Russian civil society in the work of genuine democracy, are banned as “undesirable.”
And yet, there is still appetite among the Russian public to vote for a candidate opposing Putin’s war and corruption. Hence, the unexpected success of Boris Nadezhdin, a little-known liberal politician who gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures backing his candidacy and was polling at 10 percent — a remarkable achievement given that the media in Russia is Putin’s personal cheerleader. Of course, Nadezhdin has now been banned from running, but his success has shown that Russians will queue to show support for a genuine opponent.
I now call on those Russians to demonstrate their resistance by writing the name “Alexei Navalny” on their ballot papers on March 17, in tribute to the regime’s latest and most prominent victim.
And after Putin “wins” in March, Western leaders should no longer indulge this obscenity. If they have to talk to Putin, it should be as hostage negotiators talk to criminals, but they cannot give him the slightest trappings of legitimacy. They should finally show that their fine words on the inviolability of European borders are worth the paper they’re written on.
Western leaders must never again feed Putin’s belief that being a criminal boss is the same as being a head of state. And no one should kid themselves that he will respect new agreements any more than previous ones if they aren’t backed up by force.
Declaring Putin’s regime illegitimate would also deal a heavy blow to those who, disgracefully, continue to do business with the Kremlin despite sanctions. They too should know that their corrupt deals with this regime are worth nothing.
Such a declaration would promote the federalization and democratization of Russia in the future as well, as nonrecognition would carry implications for Putin’s successor. If the process by which Putin empowered himself was declared illegitimate, then so too would the process of appointing whoever came next. Denied international legitimacy, they would then need to make greater efforts to seek it from the Russian people and regions.
For now, refusing to recognize Putin’s rule would also deal a blow to his ability to recruit soldiers and keep the army under control — people are more likely to refuse to die on the orders of an illegitimate commander in chief.
Simply put, we need strong words and deeds to declare Putin illegitimate. Western countries should be strengthening their support for Ukraine to help engineer Putin’s defeat there. And come March, there should be no congratulations, no good wishes and no legitimacy granted to an illegitimate dictator.
If the West wants to honor Navalny’s ultimate sacrifice, it needs to get tougher with his murderer.

Russia’s problems begin much farther down the ladder than Putin. From Boris the local cop on up the bureaucratic ladder, it’s nothing but a parade of officials with their hands out waiting for a bribe. Until you get rid of the rot at the bottom, the rot at the top is irrelevant. You need look no farther than across the border in Ukraine, where a lackluster comedian is now nearly a billionaire. Or perhaps to Kazakhstan and the Nazurbayev klan. Or Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan et al. The whole of the former Soviet bloc are a series of kleptocracies run on bribery and corruption…because that’s how it was when the communists were in charge.

Filthy depraved psychopath scatological comedian ZZZZelenskiiii is the first leader of a nation who plays the piano with his schlunck on Ukrainian TV.
That may be real reason he is so beloved by Biden and NATO.
Maybe if Biden learns to play the piano with his schlunck, he too will win in November 2024.

This country, America, is broke. The corruption in DC continues to spend non stop like there is no future. Young Americans have no interest in joining any of our branches of military. The imbeciles in Washington continue to send billions to Ukraine. Over one half million Ukraine soldiers have died with who knows how many wounded men and civilians. Ukraine has already lost the war and yet American politicians in DC talk and behave as if Ukraine still has a reserve of millions of trained soldiers. It does not. So, now Zelensky is rounding up women, boys and old men to fight America’s Russian proxy war? What kind of insanity is this? Biden and his administration are responsible for this slaughter. And you want what?
Domenic Pepe says
I think there is a need to review some history that relates to the Ukraine-Russia War.
Most of Ukraine and the Crimea were an integral part of Russia going back to 1770 and Catherine the Great,
The Ukrainian Cossacks were an important military ally and friend of Russia for hundreds of years.
Russia defeated and gained much territory from the depraved psychopathic murderous Islamic Ottoman Empire, including much of Ukraine and all of Crimea and the area around the Black Sea and the Balkans.
Europe should be grateful that the Russians disposed of the murderous depraved Islamic psychopaths in much of Europe, keeping it Christian, especially Ukraine.
Instead, Ukraine ingrates provoke and make war on their own cultural Russian and Orthodox brothers and sisters.
What a disgrace.
So, the Ukraine-Russia war is more of a civil war than anything else. As such, Russia will probably prevail, just as US President Lincoln prevailed against the Confederate South in the US civil war.
America should pay heed to US Cold War historian and diplomat, Ambassador George F. Kennan who advised and warned against NATO expansion after the Cold War ended, the Warsaw Pact broke up, the Soviet Union dissolved itself into 15 separate nations, Germany reunited, and communism was repudiated by everyone.
In fact, NATO should have also been dissolved 30 years ago. after this victory.
The USA and the West won the Cold War more than 30 years ago, but chose to shut Russia out from a comprehensive peace. Why ?
NATO’s only purpose after the Cold War ended was, and is, to maintain and provoke hostility against Russia.
Why ?
Why is the wisdom of George F. Kennan being Ignored by America and Europe ?
Domenic Pepe says
I believe that George F. Kennan was right.
“The dean of America’s Russia experts, George F. Kennan, had called the expansion of NATO into Central Europe ‘the most fateful error of American policy in the entire post-Cold War era.’
Kennan, the architect of America’s post-World War II strategy of containment of the Soviet Union, believed, as did most other Russia experts in the United States, that expanding NATO would damage beyond repair U.S. efforts to transform Russia from enemy to partner.”
Quoted from James Goldgeier, Brookings Institution, June 1, 1999.
Eastern and Western Europe must find their own way of living peacefully with Russia. It is their historical problem.
They must find a modus operandi on their own, with as little interference by the USA.
That is the only way some kind of robust and lasting political equilibrium will be attained.
George F. Kennan was right.

Ukraine cancelled its elections.
This is a local territorial dispute and interfering has and will continue to make things worse.

We cannot bear the burden of the world any longer, especially when the entire world is storming our borders and milking every last dollar from our social services.

General Wesley Clark, former head of NATO, is on record discussing election interference in Ukraine, Brazil, Italy et al. He now works for Soros’ Open society doing the same thing. I’m breaking up my opinion in 2 parts.
Part 1
One thing has nothing to do with another, yes Putin has a long history of going after his political enemies. Such individuals have met their fate by falling out of a window or have been poisoned but these suspicious deaths should not be used as a pretext for continuing to fund the stalemate on the battlefield in Ukraine. So making Navalny a martyr bears no connection to the reality on the ground of sending Ukrainian men to the slaughter for Western armchair generals who live in their isolated fantasyland. Western cheerleaders to this proxy war are divorced from reality, they think if they just keep funding Ukraine’s war efforts, somehow Putin will be overthrown.
This isn’t 1917, an internal revolution to overthrow Czar Putin is not in the cards. The Russians have taken a few eastern Ukrainian provinces and have dug in with a WW1 style defensive perimeter protected by razor wire along with several lines of trenches. You can have all the martyrs you want, you could even have Ukrainian soldiers scream, “Remember Alexei Navalny” as they rush against the Russian lines and are mowed down by machine gun fire. But how will that bring down Putin?
Coming back to my point, how Putin deals with his political enemies has nothing to do with the NATO backed proxy war against Russia on the battlefields in Ukraine. There’s a huge disconnect between the realities on the ground in Ukraine and the Hollywood fantasy ending of those who wish to see Putin removed from power. The Ukrainian military will never be able to dislodged the Russian army from eastern Ukraine. But let’s say that with odds of ten million to one, the Ukrainians are able to take back their eastern provinces from the Russians will that still lead to Putin being overthrown – nope!
Jonathan S. says
Part 2
So then what are we left with? We’re left with the only viable solution, which is to seek an armistice between Russia and Ukraine. Let Putin have Crimea and eastern Ukraine, then allow Ukraine to concentrate on rebuilding its economy like South Korea has done since the end of the Korean civil war. North Korea’s regime is far deadly to its people then Putin is to the Russian population, so why aren’t we encouraging South Koreans to make war with North Korea in order to remove that totalitarian dictatorship? The North Korean regime has its own political prison camp system along with its 3 generation rule. That’s imprisoning 3 generations of a family based on just one dissenting family member to the Communist regime. So how come people in Western democracies aren’t pushing South Korea to go to war with North Korea in the name of all the people unjustly imprisoned and for all the dissenters that are being tortured?
So yes, the death of Alexei Navalny is a tragedy but let’s no compound things by causing more people to die in vain by holding on to the fictional belief that continuing to fund the West’s proxy war against Russia will lead to Putin’s political demise.

Yes. A sound proposal under the circumstances …

“The bottom line is Zelensky’s regime is tottering. Because of Zelensky’s martial law based regime, there will be no elections and no open political process. But anger in the army is growing, and sooner or later they will choose a leader, most likely Zaluzhny.
There will be regime change in Kiev, coming soon.”
Quote from Stephan Bryan … Feb 19, 2024 … on Substack
Washington has fondly hoped that it could bring about regime change in Russia. Now it seems even more likely that there will be regime change, but not in Russia –in Kiev.
The catalyst for regime change in Kiev is the bloody and now ended battle over Avdiivka.
See … REGIME CHANGE IS COMING …TO KIEV
Zelensky May Soon Be Forced Out Thanks to Avdiivka
Domenic Pepe says
Quote from the Savage Nation interview with Stephan Bryan ….
“While the West is committed to deposing Putin, regime change may happen in Ukraine first. Zelensky staked his reputation on Avdiivka, but outgunned and outnumbered, Ukrainian troops were forced out by Russia after a costly four-month battle. Defense expert Stephen Bryen joins Savage to analyze this crucial new phase of the war in Ukraine. This month, Zelensky replaced Gen. Valery Zaluzhny with Oleksandr Syrsky to be Ukraine’s next military chief in a risky leadership shake-up that is likely to be unpopular with troops. As the stakes rise, Zelensky has now turned on his fiercest fighters, targeting those not loyal to his leadership. How would the Ukrainian opposition oust Zelensky? Who might replace him? Why is this more than just a territorial war? How can Ukraine survive the loss of life? Why Biden does not want to make concessions to Russia in 2024. What are the origins of Nazi sentiments in Ukraine and Putin’s calls to “denazify” Ukraine? Bryen and Savage unravel the Western propaganda and give the unvarnished truth about the War in Ukraine.”
Jason says
After the fall of the USSR in 1989, the West, IE, and the USA moved in and Raped Russia of its natural resources. This occurred under Boris Yeltsin, who welcomed the kickbacks. Putin, who had had enough of the West’s interference, shut down the theft of Russia’s natural resources. The West under, the USA, strongly encouraged and revolution in Ukraine. The West got their man, Zenlenski, a comedic homosexual. Then the West broke their Cold War agreement and started encircling Russia with Nato countries. Then the West nullified the Minsk agreements and armed Ukraine. As everyone knows, the USA has a Monroe Doctrine. What happened in 1962? Russia tried to place missiles in Cuba and the West almost had a nuclear war. Does not Russia have the doctrine? Finally, before the war, the USA had several chemical and biological weapons labs on the border of Russia, WHY? The West wanted war and blamed it on Russia. As for Zelinsky, the first thing he did when obtained power, was to mass murder western Ukrainian Russians. Putin has shown restraint and has acted like a true leader.
Spies in the not-too-far past were usually executed if they were caught. As for Navalny, he was caught spying for the British. Navalny wanted $10 million to start a revolution in Russia. I have no sympathy for the man, I guess he deserve it, he knew what he was getting into.
Ukraine has always been part of Russia. It was only Lenin who thought it should be a separate state. So the West has sided with a Communist to start a war.
As for Russia, it seems to be doing very well. Swimming in petrol dollars and the boom is on. Russia has also said that it wants nothing to do with democracy. Democracy today means abortion, gay sex, pedophilia and transgenderism. This type of democracy will destroy your country as it is doing in Europe and the USA. Russia wants nothing to do with it.
So again, the West should leave Ukraine alone and worry about itself.
TRex says
Tell that to the military/industrial complex and all the American politicians who are grifting away in Ukraine. They could give a shit whether Ukraine prevails or falls. If it falls, there’s always another “broken” country we could “help out”. If it somehow prevails, the grift continues for decades as we “rebuild” their country. It looks to me like the U.S. is always on the lookout for another “boogeyman” to protect the world from and if we can’t find one, we’ll create one. Personally, I don’t think it’s any of our business on how Russia runs its internal political affairs. Does anyone hear Putin going on about how the Democrat Party in the U.S. is politically and financially assassinating Trump? How they steal elections? How they fail to protect our own border? We were warned about “foreign entanglements” yet we seem to be more worried about them than we are the state of our own nation. It wouldn’t surprise me if Putin gets to witness the fall of the West in his lifetime.

Unlike your Putin Derangement Syndrome thesis, Pat Buchanan hit the bullseye years ago, otherwise Solzhenitsyn would have remained in Vermont, instead he returned to his beloved Mother Russia:

Increasingly, religious Russians view America and Canada, with our celebrations of bumholers, as sick societies, the foci of cultural and moral evil in the world..”

If I remember correctly, didn’t the U.S. demand Ukraine legalize homosexual marriage early in this conflict. I think it was a condition for continuing military and financial support. Is it any wonder Putin is averse to more “Western” influence on his border?

As to Ukraine … it was not our problem. It never was – unless we’re responsible for the money laundering and supporting Ukrainian corruption and allowing Soros-types to turn the nation into a public cesspool.
As to Navalny … who cares? He was a known asset of OUR enemies. He worked for people who are traitors, murderers, mass-murderers, and war-mongers. I cannot judge his soul or his intentions, but if you see someone working with Nazis … who cares HOW he got his just desserts? The man was scum.
As to Pootler … maybe he did kill Navalny. So what? Vince Foster. Jeffrey Epstein. Seth Rich for the Left … and Ashley Babbit, Roseanne Boyland, and Phil Haney for the Right. And many more. Add your favs. Which of these politically motivated murders justifies making war on America?
Unless you want to say Pootler should attack America because Brandon has J6 prisoners on ice in the DC Gulag …
… who the hell are you to tell us to start WW3 … over the murder of someone WORKING FOR TRAITORS!
If you thought about it rationally … I’m sure someone could come up with plenty of WW2 and Cold War parallels. Starting wars over a political assassination has to be one of the dumbest and most FALSE FLAG level excuses.
Why not just nuke Russia because Tara Reade moved there? How dare Brandon not be allowed to take out an accuser?
Got to be one of the lousiest and stupid rationalizations for hating people I’ve heard.

I was wondering where the comments would go after reading this article. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people shared my view. I think a lot of people are fed up with this “us v them” crap when it comes to foreign relations. They way things stand, who are we to be imposing our “standards” on the rest of the world when our own country is up to its neck in debt, decadence and corruption? IMO, our entire foreign policy is one big grift machine to keep us thinking we have to save the world from…something. I just hope the peoples of the world don’t confuse we citizens with the jerks who run our government. Remember when Sting sang “I hope the Russians love their children, too”? Well, they do, and they are not Putin just like we are not Biden. Yet, we have no shortage of shit-disturbers who want to ramp up the animosity just to keep the arms makers fat and happy. I guess when you spend $800+ billion a year on a war machine you have to justify it somehow. Unfortunately, there are so many people whose livelihoods depend on the military/industrial complex it can’t be turned around. Ukraine is none of our business as far as “boundaries” go. It is a good place to empty our our armaments cache creating a need to replenish it with new stuff. And if we don’t, Putin will be in Poland next, then Norway, etc. BS!
