The one thing you can count on pro-Israel Dems to do is lobby behind the scenes, launch a tepid criticism, and then back off in the face of the backlash and blowback from the lefty establishment that dominates the media and is 100% anti-Israel.
AIPAC dared to run Facebook ads that were critical of Rep. Tlaib, Rep. McCollum, and Rep. Omar, not to be critical of them, mind you, but to find pro-Israel people who were also worried about them, and hit them up for donations. And then had to quickly apologize when the wrath of the media, including the JTA, a leftist outlet whose ‘J’ has long since fallen away, descended on them.
And then Democratic Majority for Israel tried to stand up to Bernie.
But that didn’t last very long.
Democratic Majority for Israel does not intend to run any more televised ads against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) beyond the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, DMFI CEO Mark Mellman confirmed to Jewish Insider. “We don’t have plans to be further involved in the presidential race — against Sanders or anyone else, for that matter,” Mellman told a gathering in New York City earlier this week.
Shifting focus: During a panel discussion at New York’s Marlene Meyerson JCC on Wednesday, Mellman emphasized that DMFI will focus on congressional races. “We have no plans to endorse a candidate in the [presidential] race,” Mellman said. “We will be involved in congressional races and in some cases those are Democrats running against Republican and in some case, those are pro-Israel champions running against anti-Israel challengers.”
To summarize, Bernie Sanders has nothing to worry about from DMFI, but maybe some of his political allies do. At least until there’s enough pressure and then DMFI will back off.
