The “$60,000 Electric Junkers to Save the Planet” industry is running into trouble. Tesla sales are down and GM is running into trouble with its lineup of electric junkers. Especially since with the Bolt gone, it has no more remotely affordable EVs. And the people who can drop a year’s salary to save the planet are buying luxury brands.
GM’s U.S. dealers sold 594,233 new vehicles in the first three months of 2024 compared with 603,208 a year ago… GM sold 16,425 electric vehicles in the United States, down from 20,000 in the first quarter of 2023, a milestone that was supported by sales of the since-discontinued electric Chevrolet Bolt
“Our brands are all performing well. GM gained retail market share year-over-year with strong mix and pricing, our inventories are in good shape heading into the spring, and production and deliveries of Ultium Platform EVs are rising, led by the Cadillac LYRIQ,” said Marissa West, GM senior vice president and president of North America, in a statement. “We’re on plan.”
Let’s look at the numbers for the “plan”.
GM plans to sell 1 million electric cars by 2025. It sold less than 40,000 in 2022.
2025 is, let me do the math here, less than a year away. In the first quarter of 2024, GM sold 16,425 electric junkers.
In the first quarter of 2025, GM will need to sell 250,000 of them.
How is GM planning to get from 16,425 to 250,000 with a year to go? Don’t ask questions. It’s on plan.
The Chevy Bolt, one of the few affordable EVs ran to $26K. The Caddy Lyriq is around $60K. That’s obviously a very different income demo. GM is trying to compete in the already overcrowded luxury EV SUV market and they’re running out of trust fund babies and DEI officers with a lot of money to burn who really and truly love the planet.
Nearly all of the early adopters and people concerned about internal-combustion engines’ impact on the planet have bought electric vehicles, and now automakers are facing more skeptical mainstream buyers, Edmunds Director of Insights Ivan Drury said.
Biden and Dem states are still pushing a car ban that will leave people with no choice except to buy electric junkers. But the majority of Americans still won’t be able to afford them and still won’t be buying them from GM.
They’ll be buying Korean and Chinese.
Kia Corp.’s sales dropped 2% year over year with 179,621 vehicles delivered, marking the second-best first-quarter behind 2023’s record. With sales of the new, all-electric three-row EV9 SUV, Kia’s first-quarter EV sales were up 88% from the previous year.
GM’s leadership decided to nuke the company to push the climate change hoax. If EV mandates are actually enacted, the last of the American automotive industry will simply disappear.
Makes me wonder about the intelligence of the CEOs. Any fool could see it was a bad bet. Yet they kept plunging on it.
“Car ban.”
And so it goes, the Greenfield crusade to convince his 53 readers that electric cars are not really cars. I’m always glad to see you waste your time hilariously banging your head against the incoming train of clean energy rather than express some of your more, uh, let me do the math here… reprehensible views.
billions in EV losses for GM and Ford
enjoy your battery fire
Hertz also lost hundreds of millions on their fleet of EVs. Reports indicate low customer acceptance (imagine harried travelers dealing with time-costly recharging), and higher maintenance costs. The CEO, after the losses, resigned.
Electric cars are not green energy. They are net polluters and death traps.
Clean energy….. so you and your ilk are going for Nuke energy now. I’ll wait for your wet dream to happen . In the mean time we’re gonna haveta build 200 more coal fired plant to charge your fantasy.
Don’t worry. I’m sure Joe Burisma will find the time to build more charging stations as promised.
I can insure my three ICE vehicles for what insurance on one EV would cost.
But you’re free to buy as many EVs as you like.
EVs are filthy in production and use, it’s impossible to build 280 million of them, it’s impossible to build the infrastructure to support them, it’s impossible to produce enough electricity to power them and the vast majority of the population can afford them or afford to dispose of their internal combustion vehicles.
Yeah, the New Green Steal is going strong. Just ask Alexandria Ocrazio Whoretez when she’s done finger painting.
Like all the screwed up ideas that try to convince us that “man made climate change” is real, this one will not work. It is unconstitutional to tell me what I have to buy for any reason. The SCOTUS will eventually take the power of the Federal Government away as 85% of what they do is illegal. It will come to that or States will secede. Think about that.
Tell that to Hertz who just got rid of 20,000 Teslas 😂
They wanted those government subsidies but they went too far. Your critique of their intelligence levels is spot on. “A man has got to know his limitations.”
Those new figure sales figures claimed by GM seem like lies to me. I believe GM about as far as one of their EVs could drive.
To heck with Al Gore. Long live the incandescent light bulb!
I have 400 of them in my pantry.
The effort to eliminate ICE cars in the name of the planet has very little to do with protecting the planet. This effort is merely a smokescreen. This effort is actually a political movement based in communism to get rid of capitalism. The environmental Movement of the 1970s was taken over by Marxists. The Climate Change hysteria of today is based upon this fact.
It’s about total government control over the entire energy sector.
EV owners should only be allowed to charge their vehicles using wind and solar power, otherwise it’s just pretend.
Time for all world leaders to live in Grass or Mud Huts walk to their meetings and Parties and live without Electricity and Running Water
Blinken’s plane broke down so he had to drive from Paris to Brussels.
I’ll bet the bar in his fuel guzzling limo was as fully stocked the one on his fuel guzzling plane.
I hate that guy. I bet his plane and limo have Hamas flags.
He’s a Blinking Idiot.
I care about this planet but it seems to me the Old Girl is doing quite well on her own, despite the misguided efforts by fools who feel they can do a better job. Just like gambling casinos are favored by the statistical odds so, too, is Mother Nature. All the misinformed agitators out there will only suceed in creating more damage then they can even begin to realize.
The Fragile Earth and Delicate Balance of Nature are two of the biggest lies the Eco-Freaks tell us and The Delicate Balance of Nature is the older of the Lies
Yeah, “delicate” natural disasters and just everyday nature kill countless people every year and no matter how many butterflys I step on, it won’t affect my local “environment” at all, much less the Amazon, Great Barrier Reef or anyplace else. Nothing four billion years old is fragile and nothing as naturally diverse, competitive and prolific as life on Earth is in a delicate balance.
Next to climate hoax. EV scam is the biggest wealth transfer from middle class to upper class in human history. Elon wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for all the subsidies and tax breaks he has gotten -stolen- from working class stiffs.
I work in the electrical production/transmission industry. There is insufficient generation/transmission/distribution to handle anything remotely close to 10% battery powered cars and it will take several trillions of dollars and 50 years to meet today’s demand
Who in their right mind would ever, ever, buy an electric junker? Eight to ten years down the road, they will require battery replacement. How do the buyers know if they still manufacture the battery to fit their EV Junker? In ten years, how much will the battery alone cost? How many of us are willing to buy a used EV Junker? LOL ! ! ! !
So are Al gore Leonardo DiCaprio Laurie David Donna Mills as well as the Fearless Leaders of all those Eco-Freak groups all getting them? When’s Greenpeace going t o used Sails on their two Ships or maybe they can do like the Vikings and have rows or oarsmen?
Back to the age of Sail.
The Viking ships used to rely mainly on oarsman, but had a sail they could put up (though nothing like as efficient as sails became by the 1700s).
The Vikings did an impressive job of sailing to the American continent, invading Ireland and sailing down the Dnieper to Constantinople in ships that had sails and oars. I don’t think it would be possible to get a crew together nowadays with the ability to do any of that. We are weak and will get trampled by the barbarians.
Yeah, and the Vikings were tough guys. (Did you know the “G” is silent in that word?) They would row up rivers they’d never even been in and beat the fuck out of the people they encountered on the shores. Those bad-asses made it all the way to the Mediterranean that way.
They saved Sicily from the Islamopithecines, you know. I forget the military leader’s name, he was a Viking mercenary like the ones who saved Constantinople so many times, and he came up with an ingenious way to take out the entrenched Koranimals.
If you were an Irish Monk or nun, the Vikings were as bad as the Sea People who ravaged the Mediterranean in that warming period way back when, but they did spread civilization, which is weird because they were full on barbarians.
My maternal family is almost completely British and Norse British at that, which is weird because I’m so dark. I must take after my father even though my face looks like my mother’s.
The Vikings left an indelible mark on history.
