The American Studies Association is one of the most hateful organizations around and American Studies is a refuge for some of the most toxic anti-American garbage on any campus. Ditto for just about any cultural “studies” curriculum these days.
And the ASA has, in typical fashion, responded to the death of a guy in Minneapolis by calling for mandatory social justice indoctrination, accusing Jews of being white supremacists, and demanding that all racial complaints be handled by outside diversity experts.
I’ll skip over the pages of preliminary verbiage describing this as a rebellion and cut to some of the demands.
3. All schools should require intersectional knowledge of race and ethnicity to graduate. But we can push much further. Public university systems, like the University of California and University of Texas, should take the lead in making coursework on race and social justice required for admission of first-year and transfer students. This would compel immediate changes in high school and K-12 curriculum with a spillover effect on writing and publishing.
Nothing subtle here.
Force leftist political curriculums into every college and high school. Make political indoctrination mandatory. Social justice is, blatantly, leftist politics, and this would mandate its teaching.
File this under, “We’re not even pretending anymore” and “Will probably happen”.
Instead of top-down control by administrative appointees, offices conducting Title IX and civil rights investigations should involve direct input from diverse members of the university and conduct independent investigations led by mutually trusted third-party experts on equity for members of protected classes.
Translation, assorted Studies personnel and outside diversity experts will determine and impose punishments, effectively killing academic freedom, and turning internal disciplinary sessions into even more of a kangaroo court with a verdict that is predetermined.
If you thought things were bad for conservative students and faculty now, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
But don’t get the idea that the ASA hates academic freedom entirely.
8. Institutions must defend academic freedom and free speech rights when they are threatened by governmental bodies and private actors from outside the university. The attempt to silence pro-Palestinian scholars and students at UCLA, my alma mater, is but one among many disturbing examples. We must end the double standard that exists within institutions that protect the First Amendment rights of white supremacists, while allowing or endorsing campaigns that seek retaliation against dissident voices.
“Institutions must defend academic freedom and free speech rights when they are threatened by governmental bodies and private actors from outside the university” is a brilliantly Stasi sentence.
The ASA not only accuses Jews of white supremacy but also manages to stand up for academic freedom only when it involves calling for the death of Jews.
This is your college. This is your college on ASA.
