Racism is everywhere. Highways are racist. Milk is racist. AI is racist. And even trying to subject AI to struggle sessions doesn’t work.
A small team of AI researchers from the Allen Institute for AI, Stanford University and the University of Chicago, all in the U.S., has found that dozens of popular large language models continue to use racist stereotypes even after they have been given anti-racism training.
What hate crimes did the AI commit?
The researchers trained AI chatbots on text documents written in the style of African American English and prompted the chatbots to offer comments regarding the authors of the texts. They then did the same with text documents written in the style of Standard American English. They compared the replies given to the two types of documents.
Virtually all the chatbots returned results that the researchers deemed as supporting negative stereotypes. As one example, GPT-4 suggested that the authors of the papers written in African American English were likely to be aggressive, rude, ignorant and suspicious. Authors of papers written in Standard American English, in contrast, received much more positive results.
Which indeed they should have, because there’s no such thing as “African American English”. The same would hold true for someone who wrote a paper redneck or cockney style. Illiterate is still illiterate regardless of race.
AI is just a tool and it can be biased to believe that people writing in Standard American English are bad and that people writing illiterate gibberish are good. What it can’t do is ignore rules because programming is based on rules.
AI can have one set of standards or another, but it can’t have no standards, and so the only way to make it ‘anti-racist’ is to filter it to be biased against white people.
Google’s Gemini AI mess happened because the LLM got a hefty dose of anti-racism training. But the problem is that anti-racism is just reverse racism or, more accurately, racism directed at white people and hostility toward conservatives in general. Anti-racism training just makes AI deliberately racist instead of accidentally so.
I spent 6 years as a teenager back in the 1960s in 70% to 90% black schools (the worst years of my life) and was forced to learn and speak African American English just to survive. It is definitely different, people often looked down on me later when I slipped back in to speaking that way.

I recall that from my African American friends. When they natural speak is what is taught in the classroom and may had erudite and sophisticated speaking, would fall into the African American English to survive. In my early adult life I was an x-ray tech and medical assistant in variety of clinics, ERs and trauma. I saw how incredibly aware and ability to converse intelligently black kids are with their parents not speaking much. Then I saw an African American female psychiatrist on PBS talk about how socialized black kids are compared to other races and cultures. And a light turned on and I researched this. Japanese children in rural Japan don’t feel the pain of a childhood injection as other cultures and races, and so on. I reckoned the African American adult parents of these children I encountered were to flummoxed with survival in 1990’s USA. This is the first time in 40 years I have ever mentioned this to anyone especially on a mass scale as this. It’s a work in progress of our social development.
As Algorithmic Analyst can attest, Sir Richard Francis Burton noted on his travels in Sub-Saharan Africa that the black children there were the most inquisitive and precocious he’d ever encountered but the adults were dullards.
The same is true here in America. For every Ben Carson, Clarence Thomas or Condoleeza Rice, there are millions of George Floyds.
But dem dirty whiteys are all supposed to pretend otherwise.
Have you heard that parents of students at U.C. Berkeley have hired private security to protect their progeny because Berkeley won’t? Apparently, the usual suspects in next door Oakland treat the campus as hunting grounds.
My mother’s third husband is a Berzerkely alum like you although he has a Socialist Studies degree, not a science one. However, attending that university taught him the hard truth about the usual suspects. He attended back in the 70s (like you I think) and told me there were weekly rapes on campus and the description of the perpetrators was always the same; he was black and he ran really fast.

A.I. will always be as racist as those who wrote the initial programming and filtering subroutines. I had an instructor in the Navy who had a saying he used in electronics school: “Bad gozinta equals bad gozouta.” Simply put, any preconceived prejudices on the part of the programmer will find their way to the end result.
I saw an old clip recently of Samuel L. Jackson, a devout liberal, talking to Mike Wallace on an episode of ’60 Minutes’ from the eighties. At the time, he abhorred the idea of a Black History Month and asked Mike, “Do you want a White History Month?”, to which Mike replied no. When asked why, Mike said whites don’t need one. “Neither do we”, replied Jackson and said the best way to stop racism was to stop focusing on it and talking about it.
I doubt very much that Jackson still feels the same, but that’s common for progressives and the prerogative of those that are agenda driven, much as the A.I. programmers.

Yeah, I caught that too. Both are big time actors so it’s no big deal that Navy got them confused but Jackson is an anti-white racist and Freeman isn’t.
Well…that’s embarrassing. I suppose that makes me about as racist as the A.I., but I have perpetually mixed up their names. Hopefully after this discomfiting situation I’ll remember, but I’m lucky if I remember what I had for breakfast.
Just don’t eat eggs for breakfast every day. It turns out they’re high in cholesterol, which is bad. Who knew? I thought they were nature’s perfect food.
And I don’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning or even if I ate anything.
I sometimes “doom scroll” instagram when my mind is unsettled. One account had pithy sayings and I decided to go through some of them. I noticed something was off. The sayings sounded true, and many of them were okay — but I perceived that the conclusions lacked the nuance and depth required by the initial statements. And so I concluded it likely that these sayings were not produced by the wisdom of good, thoughtful human beings.
We are being nudged. The danger is incalculable to us, because our ability to discern is lessening greatly in the present time.
