Things are going great in San Francisco.
A recent study from The San Francisco Standard shows that from 2019 to May 2023, San Francisco witnessed a sharp decline in its retail landscape. In Union Square alone, the number of operating stores decreased from 207 to a mere 107 and now has a shocking 47% vacancy rate.
In addition to the shocking data on retail closures, San Francisco is also grappling with an unprecedented office vacancy crisis. The San Francisco Chronicle states that there are approximately 18.4 square feet of empty office space – representing one of the most severe vacancies ever recorded in the city.
The amount of vacant office space in SF was listed as being at 30 million square feet. So obviously local officials are cheering on Elon Musk’s announcement that Twitter will be leaving the city.
“I share the perspective that most San Franciscans have, which is good riddance,” said City Attorney David Chiu, who as a member of the city’s Board of Supervisors backed the tax break that lured Twitter to Mid-Market in 2012.
It’s all about the politics.
Twitter was welcome when it was leftist. Now that it’s more libertarian, it’s unwelcome.
Do most San Franciscans want fewer tax revenues? According to Chiu they do.

I first noticed San Francisco starting to go bad around 1960, with those monstrous highrise buildings visible as one drove onto the Bay Bridge from the Oakland side, like Devil’s Horns rising high into the sky.
MuggsSpongedice says
High rise in cities is the norm – it’s the lawlessness and the obscene demonic cost of living that has ruined this one Jewel of a city I lived in 1972 and wanted to retire to the Bay Area. One thing I noticed as I got older the hills got higher – LoL — get it aging and climbing hills? This is from the dude who climbed the foot hills of the Himalayas backwards and did the Medusa run down.
Raymond in DC says
High rises might be the norm, but there are pleasant exceptions. A surprise to many, I’d say Washington, DC is one of those exceptions due to its long standing height restrictions. If one wants high-rises, one must go across the river to Virginia, or the border into Maryland.
There are two positive consequences of the restrictions, the second only evident over time. The first is that it keeps the city at a more human scale. There is no craning one’s neck to see a building’s upper floors, and the sun has a better chance to reach the street. The second is that, as the city thrives, all the growth doesn’t remain in one quarter. Due to restrictions, it must expand into areas that would otherwise remain neglected. Areas that were rundown when I first arrived 40-odd years ago are now part of the expanded downtown.

I hope we one day return to beautiful buildings again. All that money we spend on stupid causes could easily demolish all the brutalist monstrosities and replace them with beautiful, inspiring buildings. It would be expensive, but worth it.

Thanks KH !!! That was similar to my grandfather’s approach when he was chief civil engineer in SF from late 1930s to early 1950s: combine top quality engineering with aesthetics. My parents took me to SF numerous times in the 1950s. It was a magical city: clean, safe, no highrises that I can remember, lots of attractive buildings and friendly people 🙂

Now bums camp on Frisco sidewalks and crap on them. I’ve seen videos on TV. Derelicts shitting right there over curbs! They just drop their pants and start crapping! No toilet paper! There are tents on sidewalks her in sunny San Jose but I’ve never seen a bum crap on a sidewalk.
When I first got to San Jose I was down and out. but I would go to a local “Whole Foods” to take dumps and Mexican showers. What sort of animal takes a crap right in public in front of people?
Guys like Chiu are the cause of the Fisco’s problems. And they squat over it like demons. Well fed and content while they cause all that suffering.

The notion of revenue has left the democratic party . Win elections by any means necessary and print money and spread it around to all their pundits . Elon Musk’s X isn’t the only thing that left the building ,reality itself, has also left the building . lol

Elon Musk seems like a good guy to me. No wonder the lefty scum hate him. They hate everything decent.

“LOL”?
It’s not funny what has happened to San Francisco and many other American cities. It’s embarrassing, shameful,, depressing and much, much worse. It’s a symbol something much much worse.in the entire USA.
What’s going on in the USA is depressing and dangerous. We are vulnerable to death and destruction by many foreign powers from China, Russia and the Islamic scum countries.

Bottom line is this: The Leftanistas are evil. Destroying businesses, allowing crime to flourish, spreading misery is evil and the progressive Democrats personify this.

There’s an error in the article (it’s in the linked article also). 18.4 square feet of empty office space sounds very good for a city. A 6×6 cubicle has 36 square feet. So we’re talking an empty closet in the city?
The linked article says the stat comes from the SF Chronicle so I googled that and 18.4 and the actual number is 18.4 MILLION square feet. That’s a lot of cubicles. Of the later cited list of 30 million square feet means an occupancy rate of less than 50%.
MuggsSpongedice says
I saw that error of omission — because San Francisco Chronicle states that there are approximately 18.4 square feet of empty office space isn’t bad—
18.4 million sq ft is worrisome to the building’s owners that they can write down on taxes — but it’s revenue, not tax write downs that makes millionaires and billionaires — don’t let the tax tail wag the dog but find ways to nib that tax tail into a nub

teXas. two ways to make money. make more and spend less. musk knows the move will pay for itself and more. san fran will feel the loss when the incoming fed dollars will no longer support the geographic stupidity. like many cities the budget includes tax dollars from the rest of the country to support fanciful ideas of government problem solving.
government does not solve problems people, government creates problems. less government is less problems. these leaders are merely supporting their purpose for getting paid by creating nuisance. prepare your minds to accept the idea of a people self governed. let go of the all seeing authority, it has no purpose in a free society. the groundwork is already in place all you have to do is refuse to acknowledge the current authority. it just that simple. let freedom range. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=024GLGY6r2w

I guess Star Fleet HQ won’t be in SanFran after all, lol.
Dems will just pass another $1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill, and send a few billion to bail out chiu and the city for a few more years. All they have to do is deliver ballots for the party.
Gary Hope says
“Dems”?
Perhaps you mean “DIMS”,….very, very DIMS.
All of very, very Dim and totally left wing stupid people of San Francisco.

Common sense has left the building in California, San Francisco and LA -it’s unfathomable what they are doing to the citizens of the state of California who can’t leave for one reason or another. My intent in my youth was to live in San Francisco or the Bay Area – that once Jewell of a City has not only been tarnished by the homeless defecate in public on that jewel!
demoncRats think the only way to survive is tax citizens to the breaking points. They do not think for one minute where the tax payers revenue comes from. Entrepreneurialism or employment.
I left California 7 years ago this October 1. I’m in SE Arizona – -where’s the ocean? I found real estate investment opportunities to put me over the top where my investments gain me more income than my pension and SSI combined.
Luck you say? Taking action is not luck — and being a believer in YHVH and YESHUA is taking action along with years of study and research and ear to the rail road tracks to hear the train a coming.
Then I ask myself and others, why do citizens of states like California, cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles and states like Minnesota and Michigan keep voting for the demons of lozrfr-zatan to be their governor or mayor or Congressional reps or senators? That therein lies the rub.
I was born in Santa Monica. Raised for a wile in Venice, Ca then Hawthorne (Beach Boys, Spacex/Tesla) – I saw Orson Welles setting up to film “Touch of Evil” in Venice.
One day I will reclaim my rightful throne as King of Venice Beach and stop this ridiculous practices in California — hit the beach!

When I was 4-5 we lived in Burlingame outside of SF, that was 1956-57 I remember it as a real pretty city. NOW, I don’t care what happens to that shit hole, nothing I can do about it, out numbered by mentally retarded liberals. Let them live the dream, laugh at them getting killed by their beloved illegals
