The Secret Service, despite having a cool spy-sounding name, has been mostly useless as a protective detail. The only argument for its existence was that it was a step up from relying on local police forces or military units, never mind Pinkertons, for a protection detail. Teddy Roosevelt finally got the Secret Service tasked with a protective detail while the White House police, formerly a part of the Metro cops, became the uniformed force. The track record since then has been underwhelming. Just ask JFK or Reagan or Trump.
And while it’s hard to know what government action is incompetence and what’s weaponized incompetence, months after a previous Trump assassination attempt, the Secret Service let the second assassin hang around the area of the golf course for 12 hours and allowed a security loophole that reporters routinely used to snap photos of Trump remain open.
The gunman who allegedly staked out former President Donald Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course with an SKS rifle was able to exploit a security hole that the Secret Service has known about for years.
News photographers — including those hired by The Post — have had no problem repeatedly securing spots around the perimeter of the course to snap pictures of Trump playing golf or driving around in a golf cart.
They have even taken images — which require a clear line of sight to the 45th president — unnoticed through the bushes with telephoto lenses. Some have gotten as close as 75 yards — without so much as a sideways glance from the Secret Service.
“They’re always amazed how close they can get to Trump and his entourage — it’s easy for them,” one photo agency source told The Post.
Photographers typically announce themselves to the Secret Service so they are not mistaken for threats, but the source said agents are easy enough to evade.
Nothing seemed to have been changed since the last assassination attempt. All business as usual.
So incompetence or weaponized incompetence?

Gerry Ford is always forgotten. He had TWO attempts on his life. The other point is that the last three have been republicans. JFK was an inside job but the mentally deficient socialist/democrats have done the rest because of psych drugs and propaganda.

I suspect weaponized incompetence.
And I keep hearing reports that Routh was there for twelve hours but how would anybody know that? And why would he wait that long to take his pot shots. Wasn’t Trump on the ninth hole by the time he opened fire?
This whole narrative about Routh smells like bullshit, and why haven’t the fake news media interviewed him or his family and possible friends? (I doubt he has any friends.)
Weaponized incompetence seems the most likely reason he got off his shots and drove away.

Yes, if they knew when he showed up, why didn’t anyone stop him? Or maybe they didn’t know he was there and later they analyzed the age of his droppings? Sorry, that was disgusting to say but thats the answer i came up with to the same question.

On DAY ONE – EVERY SS Agent should be FIRED and replaced with PRESIDENT TRUMP’S choice of PROTECTION! There should be enough EVIDENCE of INTENTIONAL NEGLECT to prosecute many of them! All they need to do is IDENTIFY WHO was ACTUALLY in CHARGE , ENUMERATE their “FAILINGS”, and PROSECUTE before a JURY not composed of RUBBER STAMPING DEMOcrats! I would suggest MILITARY TRIBUNALS since their acts were a THREAT to Our National Security! That little “insurrection” thingy comes to mind!!

At least have the guts to say what you mean. But no… just the whiff of a suggestion in the air, let the deranged minds of your conspiracy addled readers do the rest.
Political violence is unacceptable anywhere and by anyone. But those of us who read your columns know that your smugness on this one is pure show. You are as much a participant in the discourse of hatred, division, and violence as the ones who inspired this guy, who hung around the Trump golf course for 12 hours and… never took a shot.

I smell a whiff of flatulence coming from you. Smells Spermy.

Routh has been traveling all over the world, doing things like organizing former US allies in Afghanistan to join in the Ukraine fighting. He’s spent time in Ukraine.
Who’s paying his travel expenses?
Spurwing Plover says
There for 12 Hours who paid for his Travel Fees as w ell as Room and Board?

For years, the left has been striving for the lowest common denominator to prevail over merit. Looks like they have achieved that goal, at least with respect to the Secret Service.

The Secret Service (what a terrible name!) was better when it was part of the Treasury Department. But then we got the Department of Homeland Security, and it needed more of a mission than just having you take your shoes off at airports, so the SS was folded into it.
Here’s a suggestion: close the DHS. And close the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). It’s just theater, so staff it entirely with actors. They’d be a lot more fun than the sourpusses at the airport and the only downside is that hiring unemployed actors would leave Hollywood restaurants without waiters.
Then put the SS back under Treasury. Any SS agent who lets a wannabe assassin within 1000 yards of a protectee gets sent to Hollywood to wait tables.

Everyone knows that golf is Trump’s favorite recreation and main form of exercise, so the SS should always be prepared for that.
Reminds me of big executives in decades gone by. Golf was their main chance to interact socially and discuss business, while getting a pleasant form of exercise.
