There was Claudine Gay, the onetime Harvard President, who was a serial plagiarist, beginning with her dissertation and extending through seven of her eleven brief papers (she has no book), only one of which was peer-reviewed, that make up her scandalously small list of publications. Her extensive plagiarism was the main reason she was forced to resign her position. For reasons that remain unknown, she continues to be paid her her former presidential salary of $900,000; possibly those now in charge at Harvard wanted to keep her from accusing the university of “racism,” and letting her keep that preposterous salary was the best way to keep her quiet. More on Gay’s plagiarism can be found here, here and here.
There was Sherri Ann Charleston, the chief diversity officer at Harvard, who was discovered to have plagiarized extensively in her dissertation and handful of academic papers. So far she has managed to hold onto her job. I suspect Harvard administrators do not want to force the resignation of a second black woman found to be a serial plagiarist so soon after Gay’s demotion. More on Charleston’s plagiarism can be found here.
And now a third serial plagiarist in the Harvard administration has just been found. She is Shirley Greene, a Title IX coordinator affiliated with the Office for Gender Equity. According to the indefatigable Christopher Rufo, Greene claims to have worked to advance “Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging,” without any evidence of how she has been doing this, and once led a panel on “The Past, Present, and Future of Juneteenth” with the DEI department. Hmm. There doesn’t seem to be much there there. She has just been found to have plagiarized at least 40 passages in her dissertation. More on Shirley Greene, the latest — but almost certainly not the last — serial plagiarist to be uncovered at Harvard, can be found here: “Harvard’s Plagiarism Problem Multiplies,” by Christopher F. Rufo, City Journal, February 22, 2024:
…Now allegations have emerged that another Harvard DEI [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion] administrator, Shirley Greene, of Harvard Extension School, plagiarized more than 40 passages of her 2008 dissertation, “Converging Frameworks: Examining the Impact of Diversity-Related College Experiences on Racial/Ethnic Identity Development.” According to the Harvard directory, Greene is a Title IX coordinator affiliated with the Office for Gender Equity. She has worked to advance “Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging,” and hosted a panel on “The Past, Present, and Future of Juneteenth” in conjunction with the DEI department. (Harvard did not respond to an emailed request for comment.)…
In the most serious instance, Greene lifts directly from Janelle Lee Woo’s 2004 dissertation, “Chinese American Female Identity.” In two significant sections, Greene copied words, phrases, passages, and almost entire paragraphs verbatim, without proper attribution or quotation. She also copies most of an entire table on “Racial/Ethnic Identity Development Models,” a foundational concept in the paper, without acknowledging the source.
We can examine one representative paragraph that illustrates the brazen nature of this adaptation. In her paper, Woo writes:
Stage 2, White Identification (WI), is a direct consequence of the increase in significant contact between the individual and white society. This stage entails the sense of being different from other people and not belonging anywhere. The individual’s self-perception changes from neutral/positive to negative, and she begins to internalize the belief systems of white society. Consequently, the individual does not question what it means to be Asian American. The individual alienates herself from other Asian Americans, while simultaneously experiencing social alienation from her white peers. Only when the individual seeks to “acquire a political understanding of [her] social status” (Kim 1981: 138) does she enter into the next stage.
Here is Greene’s version, with the duplicated portions of Woo and Woo’s citations italicized:
White Identification (WI), is a direct consequence of the increase in significant contact between the individual and white society. Individuals in this stage have the sense of being different from other people and not belonging anywhere. Their self-perception changes from neutral/positive to negative and they begin to internalize the belief systems of white society. Consequently, the individual fails to question what it means to be Asian American and alienates themselves from other Asian Americans, while simultaneously experiencing social alienation from their white peers. In order to move to the next stage, the individual must acquire a political understanding of social status.
The complaint, which has been sent to Harvard’s research-integrity officials, features more than three dozen other examples of Greene allegedly lifting language from other scholars, without proper attribution or quotations….
What will Harvard do? Does it want to uphold its own rules on plagiarism or ignore them?
No Harvard student who was found to be guilty of as much plagiarism as Gay, Charleston, and Greene have been would be allowed to remain at the university. More than a month after her plagiarism was laid bare, why hasn’t Charleston been fired? And what will happen to Shirley Greene? Anything? Nothing?
“No Harvard student so guilty of plagiarism would be allowed to remain.”
Unless they were non-white.
Seems Harvard has an abundance of “not too bright” women who have been elevated well above their level of competence, based on gender and/or race. I guess as long as they are to the left of Che Guevarra…
Which tells you much. . .if HARVARD cannot seem to attract the top tier of elite women to their ranks, it seems to suggest that perhaps they DO NOT exist. I hate to be the one to suggest this idea, but given all that Harvard seems to have actually attracted in their search for such wonderful DEI hires, are serial plagiarists.
It should be a profound statement that authentic leaders for the DEI community should be widespread, but are as rare as hens teeth.
Yeah, it’s what happens when meritocracy is tossed to the wind.
It seems true that these fools who push equality are in a sense pushing suicide of a nation. It is so dumb to emphasize mediocrity over meritocracy. We did not get to the moon by lowering standards. It was by pushing them. So foolish.
How do you catch a person because there is a radical Black activist and DEI Czar at the University of NM, who makes $260,000 with four aides, and who wrote a long rant on her official page in support of BLM when her job is supposed to be ALL LIVES/STUDENTS/RACES MATTER?
ASSATA ZERAI, correct spelling, was surely a DEI hire due to the complete takeover of UNM. The entire Music and Theatre/Fine Arts is FAR-LEFT and they rant on FB which I have reported to the President since some of those rants are against THEIR OWN STUDENTS therefore making it a HOSTILE LEARNING ENVIROMENT!
What if a professor wrote against Blacks, Gays, Muslims, Mexicans????
One Music professor, Eric Rombach-Kendall, wrote on his FB page: “BREAKING NEWS: CORONA VIRUS ATTRACTED TO RED HATS!” He got over a hundred likes and many comments were hoping Trump would get it, as any MAGA, so they could DIE! What if he wrote: “CV attracted to Blacks, Gays, Muslims, and Mexicans!” FIRED AND HAULED OFF CAMPUS…. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE since now he wants MAGA STUDENTS to get infected and to DIE!
He got a $10,000 raise the next year. ZERAI gets a $20,000 raise per year.
CAN ANYONE OUT THERE INVESTIGATE HER WRITINGS GOING BACK TO THE ’90s????
In a real environment these types will not last long.
They, in effect, remove themselves from the advancing human gene pool.
IF we modern humans ever get beyond this current stage of challenge, some might look back at this era and wonder at how close we came to extinction due to stupidity.
We can fix all this mess and eliminate a lot of needless (harmful) “administrators” with a SIMPLE RACE LAW!! It should read “No decisions, appointments, offers, charges, or actions may be based on RACE, GENDER, or SEXUAL PREFERENCE with the exception of depictions of ACTUAL HISTORICAL FIGURES”!! That’s it – that’s all you need! Now there should be a PENALTIES section below that to establish the Severity of Abuses and corresponding Punishments! But, leave it to the DEMOcrats who will fight to include exclusions for “non-whites” and EXTRA penalties FOR “whites”!
We need to have a Commission to compile the DATA and related COSTS to US TAXPAYERS for Government support of these RACIAL GRIEVANCE “professions”!! And then END it all!!
Harvard sports teams soon will be leaving the Ivy League to compete against the HBCUs, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Academically, the faculty is already there.Harvard is doing to itself what that idiot, Adam Bushnell, did the other day outside the Israeli embassy in Washington. Don’t know yet whether to laugh or cry, but am leaning very strongly to wetting my pants.
I understand both Charleston and Greene received their doctorates from the renowned and illustrious University of Michigan. Any investigations need to be expanded to Ann Arbor.
Harvard’s lack of action causes me to recall the behavior of Japanese business execs in the 80s. At that time I had a management job with a well known multinational. The branch in Japan sent a peer manager to, well, I guess you’d say intern in my office to try to unlock the secrets of why the US offices were so much more productive. I grew close to this fellow such that he started unburdening himself of some problems at home that he viewed as both cultural and insoluble. When some manager wasn’t cutting the mustard, and couldn’t be talked into leaving of his own accord, they “solved” the problem by giving that person no duties and just assigning them a desk. Said person would show up day after day, punch the clock so to speak, and do nothing but stare out the window. It was referred to as “getting a window seat.” Well, Harvard’s given these useless characters a window seat because firing them would be too painful for the school– and too expensive as well I suspect.
It came to be known as “the Peter Principle” here in America. Promote people to one step beyond their skill set so they get a desk in the broom closet, where they cannot contaminate production of the effort of others. We see lots of this in Congress now.
Affirmative action at its best.
You reap what you sow.
Actually, it is a race to the bottom.
Chief diversity officer? Office for Gender Equity? Gimme a break. Just more precincts of the American Thought Police, enforcement agencies that really do need defunding.
There should be an automatic requirement that anyone who is discovered to have lifted material from someone else’s work be required to pay him/her punitive royalties. And that all such payments be publicised in every organ that carries academic recruitment ads.
I earned a doctorate, and every paper and my dissertation had to be scanned through a program that detected plagiarism. I was required to send the report and my assignment to my professor or the dissertation chair. I would have been mortified had irregularities been detected. Now, I scan my work prior to submitting for publication. Many of us in academia uphold principles of professionalism and academic integrity.
