Two centuries after Sir Walter Scott observed, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!” the Biden regime is discovering how complicated its web is getting.
It all started with the report that the Biden administration was prepping massive payouts to illegal alien invaders that would incentivize even more border invasions.
The Biden administration is in talks to offer *illegal alien* families that were separated during the Trump administration around $450,000 a person in compensation, according to people familiar with the matter
The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family, though the final numbers could shift, the people familiar with the matter said.
Biden lied and claimed that it wasn’t happening.
“That’s not going to happen,” the president said at a press conference at the White House.
In response to a Fox News reporter’s question on the proposed settlement, Biden said the report of the payments — first published in The Wall Street Journal — was “garbage.”
Then the White House brought out an adviser to walk back the denial. At another press conference, Biden threw a tantrum, reversing his denial, then denying that he had reversed it, and yelling that it was a very good thing.
“If, in fact, because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal and you lost your child, you lost your child, he’s gone, you deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance,” Biden ranted.
The media settled on the narrative that Biden had been denying the exact amount rather than the payments, even as reports came in that Biden’s DOJ had told its plaintiff pals that it wouldn’t be able to do the full $450,000 after all the negative attention.
Now the Biden admin has turned to yet another narrative.
Senior White House adviser Cedric Richmond said Sunday that whether immigrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border receive monetary settlements — and how much — will be up to the Justice Department to decide.
“I want to be clear about this: We do not tell the Department of Justice what to do,” Richmond said. “If DOJ determines that it saves the taxpayers money and it rights a wrong, then they will make the determination that is necessary and, I would assume, if they make a determination, they’ll come up with what they think is an adequate dollar amount.”
“I’m shocked that there is gambling in this establishment.” “Sir here are your winnings.”
Yes, I’m sure Garland isn’t taking orders from the White House. No more than Holder was. The very idea would be shocking and unprecedented.
When the DOJ decided to sic the FBI on parents complaining about critical race theory in schools after coordinating with a school board official who went on to be appointed to a position by the Biden administration, that was a thoroughly independent move.
But if Biden doesn’t tell the DOJ what to do, why was he denying it?
After the Biden administration spent a week denying that it was doing what it turned out it was doing, it’s now arguing that it has no control over what its DOJ is doing.
Renault had a more plausible excuse.
