Politics is not so much about getting things done, as it is about whom to blame when those things go wrong.
The Biden administration chose to tether a limited Israel military resupply package to a huge one for Ukraine. The goal here was to put Republicans on the wrong side of the Israel debate and then, in the wake of the bad news from Ukraine’s offensive, to blame them for the loss of the war.
The official D.C. echo chamber narrative is that refusing to fund Ukraine further will lose the war despite the assessments inside both Ukraine and D.C. that the offensive has failed.
Conveniently this will shift the blame from the Biden administration, which tried to micro-manage the war and went all in on it, to congressional Republicans who had little to do with it.
Apart from the debate about the war, this is a deeply cynical move.
Biden went all in on the war and he should take responsibility for its outcome. Instead, the administration has kept trying to make the war about what congressional Republicans think. Biden has gotten funding for the war. A whole lot of it. And yet somehow his people are never responsible for its conduct or its prospective outcome.
Hark; I hear another quid pro quo on a Ukraine phone call. Just like the last time, there are Republican hands– Mitt Romney, et al– that are as bloody as the Democ-rats’.
I loathe Mittens, Graham, et al, even more than I loathe the dems. I knew it was bad, but it took Trump and DCs response to him to show me how bad.

The only way for Ukraine to win that war was to never fight it. The balance of power is overwhelming. But the biden administration’s weakness and vacilliation encouraged putin to attack, and their response was too late to matter. The biden administration has shuffled and stumbled from one foreign policy disaster to another for the last three years. Blinken is almost as dumb as joe, but he doesn’t have the excuse of dementia.
Biden’s attempts tho schlep responsibility for his foreign policy off on the Republicans, won’t work much better than his attempt to claim the economy is good.

I disagree that the Republicans had “little” do do with it. BMG (before Matt Gaetz), McCarthy left the faucet open to facilitate the hundreds of billions to the money laundering operation known as the Ukraine “war,” which was actually a massive mob assault of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men and women.

As far as the “blame game” is concerned, the American people are well versed, after three years of this idiotic administration, in understanding the difference between political rhetoric and who’s actually to blame. SecDef Lloyd Austin was overheard by congressional staffers threatening House Republicans to either authorize additional funding for Ukraine or be prepared to send America’s sons and daughters into the theater. If that can be corroborated, that should be enough to end his highly political tenure.

The GOPe had way too much to do with it. Red China has also been an ATM for crooked and feckless politicians, and the clintons (but I repeat myself), since the 90s. I often think Ukraine is just a distraction from them, but there are trillions to be made there.
If there’s one thing that unites the Dems and GOP it’s spending so America threw a tonne of money at the problem.
Whatever you think of Zelensky his statement about giving them weapons not money should have been heeded. Biden admin was much more enthusiastic about money because that gave him leverage to micromanage things amongst other reasons.
I’m not comparing Israel to Ukraine although there is little difference in the minds of people like Tucker Carlson. Some of those that have appeared on his show gleefully forecast defeat for Israel on an almost daily basis. Anyway, Biden’s strategy is the same with Israel . Throw money that can be used as leverage for micromanagement. Now Biden will have to undermine Israel in a more direct way.
Good analysis Una. The balance of power is almost opposite (sans ammo situation) between Ukraine and Israel, but the desire to control and micromanage is the same, along with the incompetence in doing so.. It’s embarrassing.
We can only be certain that whatever course they’re plotting is along the lines of other hits like the Arab Spring.
Good point about Zelenskyy asking for weapons and Alzheimer Joe’s giving cash to the the Ukranian mob and Oligarchs instead. And they are indeed trying to blackmail Israel, although Netanyahu is obviously ignoring that sleazy move. He just had over 400 Hamas strongholds destroyed today.
