Pay no attention to the numbers, the media insists. There’s no border crisis. It will all go away if we just ignore it.
Except it shows no sign of going away.
The number of migrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border this fiscal year is already the most since 2006 — with four months left to go, according to preliminary Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data obtained by Axios.
Why it matters: The numbers quantify a lingering problem. Nearly 900,000 migrants were stopped by the Border Patrol from Oct. 1 to May 31. There also were more than 170,000 apprehensions last month — in line with 20-year records set in March and April.
Why 2006? What might have happened in 2006 to lubricate that border surge, which is also happening now?
That was the midpoint of the big amnesty push between 2005 and 2007 with McCain and some Senate Republicans gambling that it might be their last shot at getting amnesty done and warning that a failure would doom the party.
Illegal aliens were clearly paying attention and began scrambling to get in the door.
Border crossings hit an insane 1,189,031 in 2005, came a little under at 1,089,096 in 2006, and then dropped off sharply by 2009 when it was clear that a formal amnesty wasn’t happening, but border security became lax under Obama, and so there was no rush.
Illegal aliens do have a strategy. And any hint of amnesty creates an immediate rush.
Democrats control the White House, House, and Senate. Amnesty is expected to be on their agenda. And so after the lean Trump years, they’re coming.
