Biden, or rather Hady Amr, his point man on the conflict, an anti-Israel bundler to his campaign, is pushing to open a consulate to the PLO in Jerusalem.
Secretary of State Blinken and assorted State Department people insist that the United States needs a direct line to the Palestinian Authority.
But there’s no reason for that direct line to be in Jerusalem.
The PLO’s capital is in Ramallah. The 19th century former Christian city taken over by Muslims serves as the capital of the Palestinian Authority. That’s where Mahmoud Abbas, the PA’s leader, who just canceled the latest set of elections, lives. That’s where its government is located.
China’s diplomatic mission to the Palestinian Authority is based out of Ramallah. The Russians and the Germans also have diplomatic missions in Ramallah. Some European countries have their missions set up in Jerusalem and others have them set up in Ramallah.
Whatever your politics are, Ramallah makes the most sense because that’s where the PLO government is actually based.
The only reason to have a US consulate in Jerusalem is to undermine Israel’s sovereignty. It’s not the best way to be in contact with PLO leaders, but it helps the PLO stake a claim to Jerusalem.
The move violates Israeli sovereignty and US law.
Blinken claims that the consulate needs to be in Jerusalem as a “platform to be able to more effectively engage not just the Palestinian Authority, but Palestinians from different walks of life, the NGO community, the business community, and others.”
That’s bizarre.
America’s top diplomatic official is proposing a diplomatic mission based not around the Palestinian Authority, the terror state that he claims to be engaging, but NGO’s, that is non-profit organizations and the “business community”.
Meanwhile, he’s arguing that the US needs to have a consulate to head off another conflict.
This is self-contradictory nonsense whose real rationale is very clearly supporting the PLO’s claim to Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is not under PLO control. Biden and the Democrats would like it to be. But since it isn’t, any consulate to the PLO ought to be set up in Ramallah. Not in the territory of a sovereign country, Israel, that doesn’t want it there.
This is an attack on Israel sovereignty and an attempt to prop up a terror state’s claims to Israel’s capital.
