Bill Maher’s Treatment of the Attempted Trump Assassination

When Bill Maher opened his weekly HBO television program last Friday night, he began, quite naturally, by citing the shooting of Donald Trump that had occurred six days earlier, and he told his overwhelmingly liberal-left audience: “You should be as angry about that, as if a candidate you like, got shot.” And for stating something so obvious and so trite – something that any pull-string doll or mildly sentient parrot could just as easily have uttered on cue – Maher received loud cheers from his lapdog fans. “There will be people who will find this [shooting] funny,” he added. “Not me. There will be people, and there already have been, who have made the joke that, ‘Oh it’s a shame that it didn’t work, this assassination.’ Not me. Liberals don’t shoot each other.” More cheers followed, of course.

But is Bill Maher really so ignorant as to not know that an enormously disproportionate percentage of America’s shootings and other violent crimes take place in the nation’s large cities, where liberals and leftists are ubiquitous, and where the mayors’ offices, city councils, and all other seats of governance have been controlled almost entirely by Democrats for 50 to 100 years? The truth is that liberals most certainly do shoot each other – and they do so with revolting regularity. In short, Maher’s cheap applause line was nothing more than a cheap lie.

Next, Maher served up a laugh line about President Trump, who had just come within a quarter-inch of having his head blown open in front of thousands of horrified onlookers: “Here’s an interesting phenomenon: Trump keeps getting attacked by people whose names describe him” – a reference to New York City district attorney Alvin Bragg, who filed the 34 bogus felony indictments in the Stormy Daniels case, and Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be Trump assassin in Butler, Pennsylvania. Get it? Maher was saying that Trump is a crook who brags a lot. Ain’t that funny? And then, for good measure, Maher added: “And I hear there’s a guy named Lou Fat Fuck who’s really out to get him.”

Nitwits like Bill Maher can dehumanize Donald Trump as a “fat fuck” with total impunity – all in pursuit of a hearty laugh – even in the aftermath of an attempted assassination. For the past nine years, in fact, dehumanizing Trump has been the favorite pastime of liberals and leftists nationwide. But hey, who cares about the meaningless life of a fat fuck? Right, Bill?

By contrast, consider the indignation with which Maher himself had previously reacted to rather tepid, insignificant affronts aimed at another former president, Barack Obama:

• Remember when Republican congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina shouted “You lie!” at Obama in 2009, as the latter assured a joint session of Congress that his proposed health care plan would not cover illegal aliens? Maher subsequently accused Wilson of having behaved “like an asshole.”

• And remember in 2012, when then-Arizona governor Jan Brewer, on an airport tarmac in Phoenix, was seen pointing a finger upward in the general direction of Obama’s face during an animated private discussion about immigration? Deriding Brewer for her supposedly racist gesture, Maher characterized the governor as “an idiot” and stated sarcastically, “These are the kind of problems that arise when we permit negroes to read.”

Quite a bit of indignation about things considerably less noteworthy than a gunshot aimed at a man’s head, wouldn’t you say?

During last Friday’s telecast, Maher used the occasion to mock, as pathetic simpletons, people of faith who credited divine intervention for Trump’s narrow evasion of death. Proudly reiterating his long-held belief that “religion is stupid and dangerous,” Maher informed his listeners that Trump had survived, ultimately, because he was “the single luckiest motherfucker who ever lived” – lucky enough to have been targeted for assassination by “the world’s biggest loser,” a “virgin” whose shooting skills were so bad that he “couldn’t hit the fattest president since Taft.” And Trump’s good fortune in this instance, Maher elaborated, was consistent with the fact that his “whole life is a string of ‘you gotta be fucking kidding me’s.’”

Even Trump’s assertion, during his national convention speech, that he would never again publicly recount the story of his brush with death because it was simply “too painful to tell,” was fodder for Maher’s mockery. “I guarantee he’ll be telling it every day now,” he said, eliciting predictable guffaws from the audience. Perhaps Maher forgot that the person who actually keeps retelling self-serving – and fake – stories about his own painful experiences, is the man who until very recently was the presidential nominee of his preferred party, Joe Biden. Remember the lie where Biden kept claiming that his late son Beau had died during his military service in Iraq? And the lie where he kept claiming that his first wife and baby daughter had been killed by a drunk driver in 1972?

Maher also took time to quip that, as regards abortion restrictions: “Trump believes there should be exceptions for rape and incest – for him.” Funny stuff, huh?

Toward the end of Friday’s episode, Maher characterized Trump as “a cult leader” akin to “the Pharoahs, to Julius Caesar, to Hirohito” – thereby casually dismissing the candidate’s millions of supporters as an undifferentiated horde of mindless dolts content to surrender their liberty to a charismatic totalitarian monster. “America doesn’t need a demigod,” Maher declared, to the dutiful applause of his own cult followers. After all, he reminded us, Trump is just an ordinary guy who “puts his pants on one leg at a time – after sex with a porn star.”

You’ve gotta hand it to Bill Maher; he’s consistent. Never once has he attempted to conceal his ever-seething, ever-percolating hatred for Donald Trump. And last Friday – a few days after Trump nearly had his head blown apart during a campaign rally where his security teams were guilty at least of indescribable incompetence – Maher, without missing a beat, chose to caricature Trump as nothing more than a boastful, deceitful, lawless, megalomaniacal “fat fuck.”

Bill Maher is not an impressive man. Not at all.
