Embattled Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony, according to reports, is under investigation for alleged drug use and a shooting death that transpired, when Tony was in his early teens. He is facing potential removal from his position by the Florida Governor. Something that the Sheriff was involved with, this past month, though – a ‘9/11 Memorial’ hosted by him that included several radical members of the Muslim community – is as well of concern and, as such, should also be investigated and considered evidence for removal.
Being appointed in January 2019, Tony has served as Broward County Sheriff for nearly four years. As Sheriff, Tony has actively reached out to different communities – Christians, Jews, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, LGBTQ, Native Americans, Haitians, women, seniors, and even dog lovers – which is commendable on his part. On September 9th, however, Sheriff Tony’s outreach stepped over the line to the point where it was dangerous and offensive – dangerous because of who were involved and offensive to the memory of those who perished on 9/11.
Last month, Sheriff Tony hosted a ‘Unity in Faith Prayer Breakfast and 9/11 Memorial.’ According to Tony’s Facebook page, the event “joined BSO and the community to pray and honor the men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.” He writes, “We will never forget.” What is strange about these words is that they sit above a photo of the Sheriff bowing his head in prayer with an imam, Shafayat Mohamed, of a mosque that has been a haven for several high-profile al-Qaeda terrorists.
Mohamed is the founder/imam of the Darul Uloom Institute (DUI). There, he taught classes to convicted terrorist “Dirty Bomber” Jose Padilla, who was accused of plotting to detonate a radiological bomb inside the US. Al-Qaeda commander Adnan El-Shukrijumah was a prayer leader at DUI. DUI Arabic teacher Imran Mandhai, Hakki Aksoy and Shueyb Mossa Jokhan hatched a plot at DUI to blow up South Florida power plants and a National Guard armory. Mohamed claimed one of the 9/11 hijackers may have prayed at DUI. And Mohamed, himself, was thrown off a number of Broward County boards for his hateful rhetoric against gays.
Also attending and posing for photos with the Sheriff were the President and Operations Manager of the South Florida Muslim Federation (SFMF), respectively Samir Kakli and Gibson Lopez. SFMF is an umbrella group for South Florida’s many radical Muslim institutions. This past May, Kakli posted on Facebook that Israel is the “world’s leading terrorist organization” and helped lead a rally, where he and others called for Israel’s destruction. In October 2020, Kakli called for the release of leaders of the Holy Land Foundation (HLF), who were convicted of fundraising for Hamas, and in June 2020, he promoted the Palestinian “Day of Rage.”
In the photos with Sheriff Tony as well was Sultan Mohiuddin, Imam of the Islamic Foundation of South Florida (IFSF), yet another radical mosque with a disturbing history. In April 2014, IFSF hosted a talk by Mazen Mokhtar, the former administrator for an al-Qaeda financing/recruitment website, who has called Hamas acts “heroic” and suicide bombings “an effective method of attacking the enemy.” IFSF’s ex-Youth Director (and former SFMF Facebook Manager), Abdur Rahman al-Ghani, used social media to label Jews “demonic,” America the “World’s Number One Terrorist Organization,” and gays “stone cold kaffirs outside the fold of Islam.”
One more attendee at the Sheriff’s event was Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, the Communications Director for the Florida chapter of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and legal advisor for the American Muslim Association of North America (AMANA), a group that was condemned by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for promoting “venomous” antisemitism. In April 2010, just three months prior to the ADL condemnation, Ruiz wrote an article (‘Las fobias de mi vecino’) vilifying the Jewish religion and citing a Lithuanian Catholic priest, who was infamous for advancing a blood libel claim against Jews and who was stripped of his priesthood.
Why would Sheriff Tony, at an event hosted by him, wish to “unify” with such individuals as these, let alone at a memorial for the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks?
Unfortunately, the previous Sheriff, Scott Israel, created a precedent for such behavior, when he hired Nezar Hamze, at the time the Operations Director for CAIR-Florida, to be a Deputy Sheriff at the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), in 2014. Besides the disturbing fact that Israel had just hired someone from a group linked to Hamas, Sheriff Israel also used Hamze as a liaison to introduce him (Israel) at radical mosques. Note: Hamze is still employed at the BSO.
This past April, during Ramadan, Sheriff Tony showed up for photo-ops at the Islamic Center of South Florida (ICOSF), which was also represented at the 9/11 event. ICOSF is owned by the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), a group named by the US a co-conspirator to financing Hamas. During a 2000 sermon, ICOSF’s imam Hasan Sabri cursed America as an “enemy” and threatened Muslims who accept her help. ICOSF’s Dawah Director Rasheed Mahamad is too Assistant Secretary of AMANA and is in numerous pics with AMANA President Sofian Zakkout, who was removed from two anti-crime boards for his support for Hamas and Holocaust denial.
It would seem, by Sheriff Tony’s recent activities, that he is continuing the dangerous behavior of his predecessor. He is associating with a crowd that is a threat to the local community as well as national security. Coming from the Sheriff of one of the largest law enforcement outfits in the US, this is completely unacceptable. His hosting of terror-tied Muslim groups and individuals at a ‘9/11Memorial’ is more evidence that he is unfit to be Sheriff and should, together with Deputy Hamze, be removed from their posts immediately.
