Peter Buttigieg, the eternal class president, is an old person’s idea of a young person. He’s polite, well-mannered (except when he’s stabbing Mike Pence in the back) and serious about all sorts of ideas that he has no ability to implement in the real world.
“Mayor Pete” is running a failing city. But he is being touted as the millennial candidate. At 37, the millennial classification is open to debate. (There’s no official classification for generational boundaries.)
Too bad millennials hate him.
The Morning Consult poll I previously quoted shows that he pulls in 11%, his highest number, among voters 65 years old and over. Meanwhile among voters 18-29, he has the worst showing with only 5%.
Among the 30-44 age group, he performs a little better at 7%.
Only when you get to 55 years old, do his numbers start looking good at 9%.
Why does Peter perform so badly with young people?
It may be that he reminds them of the class suck-up, which he undoubtedly was, who played up to the teacher or the boss, but then poisonously stabbed everyone in the back.
Buttigieg really isn’t likable if you’re young. The media loves him because it’s not.
And it might just be the D word. Something else the media isn’t.
It was clear the moment Pete Buttigieg took the mic here in Orangeburg that the South Bend, Indiana, mayor has a problem in South Carolina.
As the Democratic presidential candidate stepped onto the stage set up for him in a white-walled event space, he stared out into a sea of white faces.
The lack of diversity at his events was obvious to the mayor throughout the trip, which also included predominantly white crowds in West Charleston and Columbia. The disparity led Buttigieg — in the middle of his appearance in Orangeburg — to deliver a plea to the 10-or-so voters of color in the 75-person audience.
Buttigieg performs very badly among black voters. As in the 2% range.
And that may also explain why his numbers skew so badly among young and old voters.
He scores best among white men, at 11%, worse among white women, 9%, and black people won’t even give him the time of day.
That diverse younger electorate among Democrats has been the death blow for other lefty candidates. It’s locked ‘Mayor Pete’ into an electorate of elderly white male Democrats. That may be enough to make him Biden’s VP choice. But I doubt it.
