Does ‘Systemic Racism’ Cause ‘Social Inequality’?
Description: Many of us believed systemic racism began disappearing dramatically shortly after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Yet, today, educators, politicians, activists and others bemoan the presumed pervasiveness of “systemic racism” in the United States. Systemic racism is blamed for racial disparities in educational attainment, income, personal health, prison sentences, and in other domains. But how do we know if systemic racism exists or even explains observed racial disparities? Charles Negy endeavors to answer that question and address other considerations when attempting to confirm the presence of systemic racism.
CHARLES NEGY is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Florida and a licensed Clinical Psychologist.
