Here’s Speaker Pelosi and Dem leaders proposing to once again pivot away from impeachment.
House Democrats conceded Monday that the possibility of impeachment proceedings against President Trump is over, at least for now — marking a dramatic retreat in the wake of the conclusion by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III that Trump’s campaign did not conspire with Russia in the 2016 election.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and members of her leadership team agreed in a Monday night huddle that the caucus needs to stop talking about collusion with Russia because it was distracting from their legislative agenda, according to three people in the meeting or familiar with the discussion.
But the rest of the Washington Post story is, predictably, about other Democrats vocally pushing Russiagate.
The Dems have a two-fold problem.
1. Most Americans don’t care about the Russia stuff.
2. A core part of the Dem base cares about almost nothing else. That includes the media, which is making a ton of money from spreading Russiagate conspiracy theories.
Dem leaders would live to pivot away from Russiagate. But it’s impossible. Especially since Pelosi may set the legislative agenda, but the media and some vocal lefty freshmen like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Tlaib, Omar, etc… set the actual public agenda.
And Pelosi is tied to the donor base, which is activist, militant and wants to see a brutal scorched earth campaign against Trump.
Individual Dems in safe lefty districts can profit by pushing impeachment and Russia conspiracy theories, becoming high profile figures and fundraising off their attacks.
Pelosi has shown that she can’t control them. The media sees big profits in pushing these conspiracy theories. And so the Dems are doomed to use their House majority to go after Trump while giving most Americans no reason to support them.
The Dems created this monster. They can’t escape it.
