The etymology of the word “admiral” is fascinating. It comes from Arabic, meaning “commander at sea” or something like that. Then somehow it was picked up into Old French. Then somehow into Old English.
That’s interesting. The etymology of words is fascinating. Even the word “etymology” is an interesting one – from Greek to Latin to Middle English 🙂 I just looked it up. I figured it was of Greek origin, even though it’s easily pronounceable and most Greek words aren’t.
For instance, I keep having to explain to my neighbors what “windviews” are, because there are so many in my apartment building. (I personally think they’re dangerous.)
