Senate Republicans never seem to learn. Or perhaps all that they’ve learned is that like the Israelis, when dealing with a completely untrustworthy and radical enemy out to destroy you, but who plays the victim in the media, it’s best to play along and let them show that they don’t really want to make a deal. That strategy never worked for Israel and it certainly isn’t going to work for the Senate GOP.
The infrastructure battle is not about ‘infrastructure’. Not even in the loosest welfare state and Green New Deal sense that Biden is using for a bill that has little infrastructure and mostly consists of leftist pork, including billions for wealthy liberal electric car owners in California.
The whole point of this vicious little exercise is to prove that it’s impossible to work with Republicans and to abolish the filibuster, and any restrains on Democrat power, with a raft of absolute totalitarian agenda items from packing the Supreme Court to adding two Dem states.
As David Horowitz often says, the issue is the revolution.
The game has been to mount pressure on Senate Democrat holdouts like Manchin and Sinema to abolish the filibuster and pass radical nationalized vote-rigging bills like H.R. 1. The infrastructure deal was supposed to show that things can get done without abolishing the filibuster and turning America into a banana republic run out of D.C. by a small Democrat elite.
But any such deal was always going to get blown up by the Left.
Biden, who’s acting as the fake moderate front man for the Left, had the job of both pretending to back a deal and then to blow it up. Playing Arafat, he did just that in a way that is calculated for the media to spin as blaming Republicans.
The Democrats want the pork, but they want to have a free hand in dispensing it and in running the country with an iron fist. They’re not going to settle for a deal. Instead the Left will blow up every deal, in true terrorist fashion, while the media blames those who tried to negotiate with them.
