The Detroit School Board voted to change the name of Ben Carson High School of Science and Medicine, removing its connection to the retired neurosurgeon who was the secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Trump administration, according to former HUD chief of staff Andrew Hughes.
Dr. Ben Carson’s name will be scrubbed from a Detroit public high school after the school board voted in favor of removal last month.
Carson says he’s not surprised.
“Cancel culture is alive and well. It’s infiltrating. Political correctness, wokeness, cancel culture, this is going to destroy us as a nation if we don’t get a grip on it,” said Carson.
Carson’s education started in the Detroit Public School system. Born into poverty and raised in a single-mother household, Carson went from inner-city Detroit to Yale University becoming one of the most influential neurosurgeons of a generation.
“It’s very sad that we’ve reached the point where political ideology trumps the whole purpose of an educational institution,” Carson told Fox News host Sean Hannity Monday. “And we’re seeing this wokeness spreading throughout our community to the destruction of our community.”
“How does it do any good for us to demonize people with whom we disagree and to teach that to our children at a time when the math scores are down, the reading scores are down, academic performance is down?” Carson added.
Speaking of math scores, the ones at the high school that used to carry Ben’s name appear to be pretty bad.
The Benjamin Carson High School for Science and Medicine shows a 22% proficiency in reading and 8% in math.
So much for the science part.
AP math course participation is below 1% and AP science is at 5%.
Removing any association between Ben Carson and the school does him a favor.
Removing the math and science part from the high school makes sense. And then you might as well dump Carson’s name from it too. Political ideology is the whole purpose of an educational institution, which means students learn nothing in school except that opponents of the Left must be destroyed.
Some of the renamings are about a culture war, but at the school level, they’re also a form of virtue signaling meant to distract people from just how badly those schools are functioning. That was obvious with the San Francisco push to rename schools even while they were closed down. But it’s just as obvious here. Instead of trying to fix failed schools, they’ll just rename them. And now that Ben Carson’s name has been taken off, the 8% math proficiency can be blamed on the legacy of the systemic racism of a black neurosurgeon.
Makes sense to me.
Rather than reparations, they would be better off learning some math. And money management skills.
Most winning poker players, for example, end up losing their money elsewhere due to poor money management skills.
The poor black kids get such a bad math education that you guys can’t imagine it. I had one wonderful black lady as a student who went through the Chicago schools, had a good job at the university, but couldn’t even add or subtract small numbers. She had a method of kind of guessing intuitively, which obviously wouldn’t work well over the long run (or short run 🙂
Some of my best math teachers were black males, kind of Southern Gentlemen types, math isn’t impossible for blacks to learn.
If you want be rich then listen and follow advice from a rich person.
If you want to be a super Sports Star then listen and learn from a super Sports Star.
If you want to be good at Math or Science listen and learn from a Professor who is teaching Math and Science.
If you are black and live in the Projects destroy ALL black people that went before you and made a success of themselves against all odds.
This makes perfect sense to black folks who swim in the victim narrative and blame everybody else for the situations they find themselves in and the problems they themselves created.
Black Americans need to learn that success is the best revenge.
And we never get to see on the msm the effects of this cancel cultured, this virtue signaling ideology that is in utter denial as to what merit and achievement take and mean. They have only the ideology of the oppressed vs oppressor to peddle and that is a road to no where. If the msm showed all the examples of the utter failures of this socialist mentality where it occurs, the choices would be clear.

Ah, but in the view of communists like Freire, teaching the standard academic subjects merely prepares students to replicate the existing oppressive society. Rather, they felt that school should be used to instill in students a critical consciousness in order to turn them into future activists and revolutionaries to overthrow that society. And here we are.

His mother, Sonya, raised Dr. Carson and his brother alone. Her story is just as brave and inspirational as her son’s. She gave all of her considerable will and energy to establish the lives and happiness of her children, instilling in them a love of learning, books, accountability and hard work – the bedrock of the American dream. Any culture or tribe or nation or people that rejects this is unsuitable for life in western civilization.

Well the next logical step for the leftist will be to just remove the Math and Reading courses from the curriculum altogether.
