The Marvels bombed horrendously and deservedly. And even more sadly for Disney, it couldn’t even manage to raise the usual outcry of “sexism, racism, Islamophobia” because about the only people who went to see it were white men.
And not that many of them.
What happened to The Marvels raises bigger issues because Marvel Comics had been a reliable source of movies and streaming television products that were making Disney very rich. (The actual comics don’t sell so well anymore.)
But superhero movies, despite being everywhere, are performing worse and worse. The Marvels isn’t an exception, it’s the bottom of a trend line. And there’s an ominous statistic in its failure.
As reported by IndieWire, tracking data for the studio’s latest release, The Marvels, states only 19 per cent of the opening weekend audience was between ages 18-24. 30 per cent, however, was in the 25-34 bracket, while only 8 per cent were between ages 13-17.
As noted by the outlet, 40 per cent of the audience for the film’s 2019 predecessor, Captain Marvel, was aged 18-24. This data suggests Gen-Z (defined as people born in the late ’90s and early 2000s) might be losing interest in the output of Marvel Studios.
Teens are less likely to go to movies, but this is still a sharp drop. And inevitable.
The Marvel movies are zombie pop culture left over from a previous generation. That’s exactly the kind of thing that teens are likely to reject.
This is bad news for Disney because its whole reason for taking over Marvel Comics was to supply itself with a treasure chest of IP that would allow it to get a lock on male teens. And for a while it seemed to be working.
Not so much anymore.
After spending a fortune on Marvel and Star Wars, Disney may not have much of a Plan B.
As I noted previously, Disney’s money is coming from ‘Disney Adults’. Childless millennials. And there’s a big problem there because aging millennials are becoming more conservative and on the other end, teens aren’t buying into its two big properties. On the one end, millennials are going to drop the woke versions that Disney makes. But Disney’s making them in the hopes of luring teens who are perceived to be more woke, but they’re staying away.
Disney is losing its past and its future.

I used to be able to suspend my belief in the bs physics and magic to watch an action movie /human cartoon such as the first set of Marvel movies. They had a long reach storyline and worked together like a set. The characters were likeable. It was an enjoyable family outing.
Then the whole thing went woke and became unwatchable and totally ridiculous. Stories and favorite characters were substituted for a heavy handed woke uncomfortable vibe.
And kids grow out of the age of cartoons. And the magic formula stops working ’cause we’re all bored with it. And there ain’t no superheroes gonna save us.
Mostly I wonder if any of this were real, who picks up the tab for all the destruction?

Fairy tales give us reality in archetypes. The struggle over good and evil is real. Woke archetypes relativize good and evil and so cannot satisfy the human heart.
Boredom usually indicates the presence of sin. The “magic” should never stop working. Disney’s iconic “Snow White” is beautifully rendered by the labor of human artists and orchestral musicians without digital special effects or scatological elements. It is universally beautiful and enjoyable at any age. Boredom in the face of such awesome talent and mastery is unthinkable.
As for picking up the tab for destruction, this was addressed at the cartoon level in Brad Bird’s “Incredibles” when the superheroes are publicly condemned and put into hiding for the collateral damage of hero work. In reality, evil woke monsters’ destroy our cities and are often paid to do so, while taxpayers pay and the real-life heroes who fight back are punished and prosecuted, often successfully.

Sounds kinda like “Team America,” where they trashed Paris while saving it from jihadis.

You’re totally right. The original Marvel movies like “Iron Man” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” were very entertaining. Even the first two “Thor” movies were fun.
But now it’s all wokerama. “The Marvels? FUCK that shit. It’s such a loser it’s already out on Netflix, and has been for awhile. I actually like the Monica Rambeau character, even though her super powers are idiotic. She can transform into any form of radiation? And still maintain brain functions? Idiotic on too many levels to list. She was just another Roger Stern creation to portray women as the physical equals of men, which they sure aren’t.
But the fake Captain Marvel and Captain Moslem? Complete shit. One is touted as “The Mighty” Captain Marvel, to make her seem the equal of Thor, who Stan Lee created to be a character stronger than the Hulk. I recently saw one of those Marvel cartoons on Netflix where she fought Thor to a standstill. Ridiculous.
Why do lefties think girls want to grow up to be fighters? They don’t. Why encourage them to fight boys? They’l just get injured. And very few boys want to grow up to wear dresses. Close to zero.
And Captain Paki? We’re supposed to believe a Moslem would selflessly fight for humanity? SHIT. If aliens were to ever invade Earth, the islamopithecines would side with them against humanity.
And “Wonder Man” is going to black, instead of white. He probably won’t even be named Simon Williams anymore. Probably Jamaal or Deshawn. Plenty of black superheroes to choose from but the woke left always has to basically kill and replace white male characters with blacks and chicks.
No wonder the comic book industry is dying and the Marvel movies are tanking. As a great man said, “go woke, go broke.”
Kynarion Hellenis says
Unfortunate, because there is a palpable need for Disney’s old ethos of honoring the magic and beauty of childhood innocence.
Jeff Bargholz says
Sadly, that’s long gone. Evil Eisner is no uncle Walt. Now it’s trannies and gay teenagers instead of Uncle Remus and Peter Pan.
I loved Disneyland and Disney movies when I was a boy. There was even a Sunday TV show called “Wide World of Disney,” I think. It was good.
The current “Disney Channel” is unwatchable. It’s a shame.

Isn’t it also about time for disney to lose it’s copyrights on all the already OVER DUE loses?? How many other companies have been given as many “extensions” as disney??
SPURWING PLOVER says
So just when will they ever release Song of the South on DVD?
Jeff Bargholz says
It isn’t on DVD? It must be an anti-white racist thing.
I streamed that movie recently. It’s good, and it was created to make white people like black people.
I haven’t used DVDs in over seven years but I’ll always love them.
Kasandra says
Maybe after years of it people are just getting sick and tired of the non-male or non-white hero formula that has informed all of Disney’s movies now for years. Yes, we get the message but it gets old. Real old.
