The DNC voted to replace Iowa with South Carolina on the Democrat primary calendar. Considering what a mess the Iowa causes were, that might be understandable, but let’s look to see whom that benefits.
The 2020 Iowa results largely benefited white lefties, Buttigieg, Sanders and Warren. Biden didn’t even place in the top three. Sanders came close to taking out Hillary in 2016. Obama scored an upset against Hillary in 2008 which helped him fuel a new narrative about being able to take her out.
The short version is that Iowa tends to benefit lefty candidates, not necessarily white ones, but those favored by white lefties.
South Carolina means a whole lot of black voters who tend to support the establishment candidates.
Biden’s path to the nomination was paved by South Carolina. He asked to make SC the first and the DNC decided to back that. So this certainly helps Biden in 2024. It also potentially weakens Sanders, Warren and most lefties, who aren’t Obama, in a way that they can’t complain about.
While I suspect a lot of people here won’t care, this does have implications that will affect our politics down the road. The next great leftist hope is much more likely now to be black. Another Obama. Or to go in accepting the loss of South Carolina as inevitable. This is a win for the Dem establishment, but one that will shape future races and potentially a future president.
