Jimmy Carter ran for office promising to create a Department of Education. The only people who wanted such a thing were the teacher’s unions already destroying American education.
The Department of Ed started life with 6,400 employees and promptly began to oversee massive student loan fraud on an unprecedented scale while trying to micromanage and radicalize local education.
President Reagan promised to end the Department of Education, but he was stuck with a Democrat congress, and the media kept falsely promising that the Dept of Ed would somehow salvage public schools. It did just the opposite.
The Bush administration helped shrink the numbers somewhat which tended to remain in the 4,000 employee range.
That’s what it was when Trump first took office. The numbers increased slightly under Biden, but they’re about to drop sharply as the Trump administration has announced that it’s cutting the D of E in half. That’s math even a public school teacher could understand.
1,300 employees out of 4,100 are being laid off and another 560 accepted a resignation package of some sort. According to the announcement, that will leave 2,183 Dept of Ed employees, which is still too many, but a vast improvement over 4,100.
Killing the Department of Education had been Reagan’s dream. The D of E was Carter’s legacy. Now another part of the worst president’s legacy is being taken apart and tossed into the Potomac.
Prior to Carter there was a federal agency called HEW, which stood for Health, Education, and Welfare. Carter broke out education as a sop to the teachers unions and because, otherwise, HEW’s budget would have been higher than the defense budget and we were still very much in the midst of the Cold War and we couldn’t have that. So, instead of having the one ginormous HEW, we got the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Education (DOE). And that’s the rest of the story.
Splitting them out also had the effect of making the DoD look larger and more targetable. If you want to save money, the most obvious place to start looking is the biggest expense and the left hasn’t been pro-military in a long time.
One split out I would endorse of HEW is welfare. I suspect welfare is part of almost every agency*. Well over half of the Department of Ag’s budget is SNAP. It also has a office that mimics HUD for rural areas. While I dislike the thought of creating new government entities, the amount of welfare America spends is hidden in various budgets. The split out would serve two purposes:
1) Let America know the cost of the war on poverty, and
2) Make it easier for those needing help to find it by providing a one stop shop.
* This isn’t even including the view that many of the grants DOGE has found is a form of welfare. I’m only including the poor in welfare, not the various leftist activists like Planned Parenthood, Politico, etc.

Ironically my own school district where I went to elementary school in the 1950s ended up being first (or at least a pioneer) in the collapse of education under the Democrats in California (and maybe the nation) so I had a ring side seat to all the nonsense that went on. The district ended up going bankrupt and the State of California took over. For some reason Fate made me a witness to all kinds of such stuff, due to no virtue of my own 🙂
DOEd needs to be eliminated, not downsized, else under some other administration it will regrow.

Actually, I believe David Rockefeller also wanted the DoE, since he was the primary financial backer of the Carter presidency —- Jimmy Carter came from Rockefeller’s Trilateral Commission (founded by DR, Brzezinski and McGeorge Bundy) and the Rockefeller brothers wished to extend their long–range Rockefeller education plan to dumb down America —- which the DoE was profoundly successful at!!!
