The media called it one of the “most progressive constitutions in the world”. Chilean voters didn’t want one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. At last count, 61.9% of voters rejected it, while only 38% voted in favor of it.

The Left is once again on the upswing in South America. And Chile’s leftists could have gotten a lot of what they wanted. Instead they decided to try for everything, loading it up with abortion, socialized medicine, green new deal nuttiness, separatist status for tribes, gender quotas and a whole lot more. The constitution would have wrecked foreign investment in the country and paved the way for a leftist dictatorship. Chilean voters were open to some leftist proposals, but this was a naked power grab.

There’s a lesson for Biden here. 

Democrats abandoned any serious effort to bring along anyone except their own wokes and pushed a series of insane power grabs that were rejected by the voters and the courts. They could have racked up a lot more legislative victories by actually focusing on what people wanted, but they became fixated on what they want.

And what they wanted was more power than anyone was willing to give them.
