Variations of this story have only happened around 10,000 times, yet the media stirs up the outrage each time only to act baffled and bewildered when it turns out to be a hoax.
Here’s “Fake Racist Receipt: Fake Muslim Edition”.
A young restaurant server in Texas says a racist message allegedly scribbled on a patron’s receipt isn’t going to get him down.
Khalil Cavil, 20, was waiting tables on July 14 at Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa when he collected a check left around 9:15 p.m., only to discover an offensive message written on the receipt. According to a post Cavil shared on Facebook, the patron had circled the name “Khalil,” which had been printed at the top of the receipt, and wrote “We don’t tip terrorist” next to it.
Confusingly though, Khalil isn’t Muslim. The customer was nevertheless banned until it turned out that the note was faked.
A customer at a Texas steakhouse who left a server with no tip and a racist message over the weekend may not return, restaurant management says.
When Khalil Cavil looked at his customer’s bill Saturday night, he saw a note written on the top saying, “We don’t tip terrorist.” The customer at Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa had circled his name, Khalil, and left a zero in the tip field for a bill totaling $108.73.
“At the moment I didn’t know what to think nor what to say, I was sick to my stomach,“ Cavil said on Facebook. ”I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists.“
Except it doesn’t.
The waiter, Khalil Cavil, 20, admitted he wrote the racist note himself in a Monday interview with the Odessa American, where he apologized to a reporter “because I did lie to you.”
“I did write it,” Cavil said, refusing to explain why. “I don’t have an explanation. I made a mistake. There is no excuse for what I did.”
Many on Facebook were offering money to Cavil who said he was working to attend college in Dallas this fall. Cavil said donations totaled about $1,000.
“All money is being processed and being return(ed),” Cavil said. “Most all of it has been returned.”
“I’m sorry. I deeply made a huge, big mistake. And I’m in the process of getting the help that I need,” Cavil said.
There’s only person who understands what he’s going through and can help him. Senator Elizabeth Warren.
