America is not the only country to embrace a single medical figure as the face of the pandemic response or to build a cult around their guru.
Fauci was one of the more mediocre figures of this group with less responsibility and more face time than most. For lockdown and mask advocates, he became the avatar of science. For opponents of these measures, he became the lying monster behind them.
But Fauci has never been anything other than the public face of the expert class that mishandled the pandemic response, some members of which are actual doctors, albeit with very little in the way of recent practice, many of whose members are ethicists, administrators, and assorted other parasitic officials and experts.
Throughout the pandemic, they lied, bullied, scapegoated, and gleefully gaslit Americans because it was for the greater good of their policies.
Some of those policies were merely inept, others, like warehousing infected patients in nursing homes or prioritizing vaccines by race, were outright murderous.
They felt no shame in their shifting messaging, advocating against masks and then for them, based on the bigger picture, without giving people the real facts.
But that’s hardly a Faucian problem. It’s an establishment problem that extends from the policy shops and think tanks that shaped the pandemic response to the everyday reality that people encounter in hospitals.
Fauci is an easy and deserving scapegoat, but the failures and lies transcend a guy who spent much of his time as a talking head chatting with other talking heads.
From the CDC to local health administrators, the pandemic response was mishandled by following artificial guidelines and pursuing political and social agendas by organizations that knew how to do little else except be good bureaucrats and advocate for social justice. China’s pandemic response, as ugly and brutal as it was, at least had some relationship to the problem. Ours pursued political goals, followed meaningless rules, and, above all else, covered its own fundament.
That much our socialist bureaucrats had in common with their ChiCom counterparts.
Fauci is a particularly uninteresting member of a class who was trotted out because he seems humane and reassuring. The humane part was a feigned bedside manner. He told people what the class he was part of wanted them to hear. It never would have occured to him to tell the truth because the expert class does not see its role as being guided by transparency and integrity. It seeks to achieve results and if that requires lying and manipulating the people, so much the better.
