The Biden administration promised that post-pandemic, federal workers would have to go back to work. Then it flipped around and cut a deal with pro-Biden unions to have federal workers go on ‘working’ in their PJs.
Now the feds are being told they have to go back to work. And they are not happy.
After President Donald Trump directed agencies to return the federal workforce to the office full-time, many federal employees said productivity will suffer under a blanket return-to-office mandate, according to the results of a Federal News Network survey.
Uh-huh. Yes, making federal workers work will hurt their productivity. No one however will be able to tell because much of the federal ‘workforce’ doesn’t do anything resembling work. They hold meetings and fill out paperwork. Then they order new office chairs. There are federal workers who perform a useful function but few of them are in D.C. or fill out Federal News Network surveys which sounds straight out of Starship Troopers.
One survey respondent who works at the Department of Veterans Affairs, for instance, said their VA facility has “finite space.”
“If we were required to return to the office, there would not be sufficient space for staff to provide quality care to our veterans,” the respondent wrote. “For return-to-work mandates, there should be accommodations for facilities that don’t have sufficient office space. Work that can be done from home should be done from home, and work that requires in-person presence should be done in the office.”
Yes, I’m sure the folks who don’t want to come to the office because they’d rather work from home are providing lots of quality care for veterans.
“My team is more productive in a teleworking environment — the output proves it,” one respondent wrote. “There are fewer disruptions, and less time spent commuting often leads to more time on the clock. The level of engagement is high, and we actively use technology, like Microsoft Teams, for collaborative meetings and discussions. Telework also provides better work-life balance, so that staff are able to bring their most productive selves to work.”
“My entire team lives in different states, but we are a well-oiled machine that efficiently and effectively get the job done with excellence,” one respondent wrote. “Forcing a return to work would be a major negative impact to both employees and stakeholders.”
“It will result in talented employees leaving the government,” one respondent wrote. “The government should find a better way to retain high performers and talented employees to continue to serve the public in a meaningful way.”
They can best serve the public in a meaningful way by leaving.
I am going to make an educated guess that government Microsoft Teams meetings are 10 times as useless as private corporation Microsoft Temas meetings, which are already 90% useless.
Ah, the TEAMS! Heaven save us from the teams! I was never considered good enough to be on a team in my working years, but I’m sure they were exceptional…..as I’m sure they are now.
Nobody feels sorry for them, and nobody believes they’re more productive at home. My local Social Security Administration building has sat empty and weeds have grown up since the pandemic. Meanwhile I have to send an original birth certificate and marriage licence through the mail. No.
This is down to the brass tacks. These people could easily be reduced by 50%. Filing paper and sitting around tables drinking coffee at “meetings” is not work. Dilbert is the epitome of the Federal “workforce”.
Vivek took this logic to heart. His departure from DOGE reduces its leadership echelon by 50%.
Your comment doesn’t make any sense. Vivek was not a government employee.
One suspects the majority of taxpayers would be happier if the employees were dismissed and the job they had previously done weren’t done at all.
Doesn’t even mention the impact on their feelz. To ease the traumatic transition, I recommend that their respective agencies advise them that they can bring their blankets and space heaters.
… and kitty cats.
The only people who can work from home and be productive are internet, telephone and text message scammers.
I’m not really sure that “productive” is accurate in this case.
“It will result in talented employees leaving the government,”
Those terms are acceptable.
The federal work force is out of control and needs an attitude adjustment about reality. Set a date, you all come in on that day and from now on, you come in to work or your fired. It really is a time proven method.
How about immediately “down-sizing” the federal workforce? Nothing draconian. A mere 30 -40% reduction would be a good starting point. Congressional staffers included.
Why dont t his lazy so & Sos just tell a real story of how the world revoles around them. Just more of their load of Poppycock and Balderdash a Excuse of why they don’t want to work
Cry us a river! Take a shower, put on work clothes, withstand the commute like everyone else….and get your bleeping jobs done for which you’re being paid!!
Oh, and keep an eye out for DOGE because they’re coming for the non-productive, coffee drinking, meeting mad hatters among you.
Are you looking for a permanent, unpaid, vacation? It’s coming to a Federal office near you and pajama wear is not allowed before being terminated.
So, turn on the waterworks, we know those crocodile tears are coming!
Government worker.
Those two words don’t belong in the same sentence.
“Government worker”= Oxymoron.
Who doesn’t wish they could get paid to stay at home and not do any real work? LOL
What better way to find out who is actually working and what jobs or employees should be eliminated – I do not believe if you get up in your jammies or underwear, scratching your belly and get a cup of coffee and log in you will put in a full 8 hours and your productivity is the same as if you were showered, attired appropriately and in the office where you better be busy or look busy
I see a lot of people in unnecessary jobs getting fired or transferred – butt heads
Cancel Microsoft Zoom and find out if any less useful work is accomplished.
What most of them produce is better left undone.
Wow! I really want to well up and cry for those federal employees. I suppose I will, if I ever stop laughing. Who in the Sam Hill do those snobbish “bureau-brats” think they are?
I was employed by the federal government for 40 years from 1976 – 2016. I was a supervisor for part of that time. This was prior to COVID. My agency generally allowed for one day of telecommuting. I referred to it as “Tele-slacking.” The truth, though, is that employees who were conscientious at work were conscientious while telecommuting. Those that were poor employees in the office were also poor performers while telecommuting. The federal government uses broad rules of general applicability so it’s not like supervisors can say, “You can telecommute because we know you will work your shift while telecommuting” while denying it to similarly situated poor performers. If a supervisor wanted to terminate someone’s telecommuting ability they’d have to spend all their time documenting their failure to work while telecommuting and the ensuring grievances and hearings.
“Fed Employees Say Making Them Go To Work Will Hurt Their Productivity”
Anyone proclaiming this needs to be fired on the spot.
Please, don’t just do something. Stand there.
Better yet, get a job in the private sector where there may be accountability and perhaps a contribution to our social well-being.
Most of the activity of the federal government violates the Constitution, anyway.
And most of it robs the private sector of capital that could be used to improve the life of American citizens.
It’s not often I hear the federal government described as efficient. I can see well oiled in the sense of lubricated with money.
