In an interview, J.K. Rowling, the children’s fantasy author under siege from transgender activists, bemoaned a “backlash” against feminism. “It would never have surprised me that there would be a massive backlash, but I wouldn’t have expected it to come from what I would have broadly seen as ‘my team’.”
Like a lot of “gender critical feminists”, she misinterprets the transgender movement as a backlash against feminism, when it’s actually the culmination of feminism. No western movement hated women as much as feminism. Feminists were ruthlessly critical of women’s habits, their interests, preferences and desires. True feminism required publicly breaking with traditional roles and expressing public hostility for the women who chose to live that way.
When Hillary Clinton wanted to show off her feminist bona fides, she sneered, “I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession.” Hillary was just echoing her elders, like Betty Friedan’s slur that being a housewife made it impossible “for a woman of adult intelligence to retain a sense of human identity”.
Hillary Clinton, in her iconic pantsuit, became the model for a late stage feminism that evinced contempt for feminity and adulation for masculine virtues. Younger women hate that model. 52% of younger Republican women and 23% of younger Democratic women in a recent survey said that they believed that feminism had done more harm than good. But what else is left?
While men joining female teams may be the most public face of the transgender movement, there are ten teenage girls undergoing some form of destructive ‘gender affirming care’ that’s distinguishable from any other method of self-harm only by the fact that it occurs under medical supervision for every one of those men who decides that he was born with a ‘female’ brain.
The real transgender movement is teenage girls getting drastic surgeries to appear masculine. as the culmination of a century of fashion trends that confused masculinity with empowerment.
But that’s just another way for teenage girls to destroy the image they see in the mirror.
In 2020, the number of teenage girls hospitalized over suicide attempts rose 50%. Suicide rates are increasing faster among teenage girls than among teen boys. Depression rates are also shooting up with 1 in 5 teenage girls having had a major severe depressive episode in one year.
According to the feminist model, life has never been better for women and girls. Women outnumber men in college so dramatically that there are two women going to class for every man. Women are now a majority in medical school and law school. Girls are being tracked through STEM programs, being pushed to code and to become jet fighter pilots.
And yet suicide rates, depression and general unhappiness are off the charts.
Feminists blame the unrealistic depictions of women in the entertainment industry, but the models have been shoved out the door. Any fashion photoshoot or commercial has to include at least one morbidly obese person from the ‘before’ part of a Weight Watchers ad. ‘Fat shaming’ has entered the lexicon as a hate crime. And yet everything is worse than ever.
J.K. Rowling and other gender critical feminists are right to blame peer pressure and the media for encouraging teenage girls to engage in transgender self-mutilation, but the question is why are teenage girls so much more vulnerable than their male counterparts to self-destruction?
Why do so many girls hate the idea of becoming women?
Feminism spent two generations destroying any sense of joy that girls had about femininity. The political and academic poisons quickly made their way into the entertainment industry and lifestyle publications. Girls have been told over and over again that they need to be more like boys. Is it any wonder that they’re trying to become boys at such record rates?
The transgender movement is the dead end of feminism. It’s why so many feminists have embraced it. J.K. Rowling is baffled by the betrayal of feminism. How could women who have based an entire movement on the unique experiences of women now deny that women exist?
But the erasure of women, of sex, and of the male-female binary was what many feminists wanted. Gender assimilation is their final triumph, ushering in a world where the only remaining women are men. While gender critical feminists (and most sane people) spend a lot of time discussing what’s wrong with them, it might be more productive to discuss what’s wrong with the teenage girls who are much more representative of the self-destructive social sickness.
If feminism works, why are so many women and girls so unhappy with their lives?
“I see so much conflation of femininity with femaleness. We were fighting to stop that conflation, and there they are, in my view, embracing that,” Rowling complains at one point.
Maybe that conflation is actually healthy and fighting against is what’s unhealthy.
“We’ve got these rights and we’ve got all these amazing women doing feminist analysis, and it will change, it really will change. By the time I’m my mother’s age, I thought, my daughters will have it so much easier. But now I think we’ve gone backwards. I think we’re living through a nightmare,” Rowling wondered.
Maybe feminist analysis was never the solution here. The nightmare is that feminist analysis proved no better than Freudian analysis at understanding what women wanted.
Feminism promised to liberate women to live their lives as they pleased. Instead it tore down what they had, chained them to a set of masculine expectations and punished them when they wanted to do something else. The economic system welcomed a massive labor force, the decline of marriage and the family, even as it’s killing our society and young women.
Western nations have become societies of broken people who are unhappy with themselves. And there can be no happiness without a sense of fulfillment that comes from purpose and meaning. Plugging a generation of young women into the panopticon of social media hasn’t produced purpose of meaning, only depression and a greater appetite for self-destruction.
Millions of Americans of all ages and sexes have decided that they don’t want to exist anymore. They’re killing themselves at unprecedented rates with shotguns and fentanyl, with mass shootings and unnecessary surgery. There’s something in the mirror that they don’t want to see and the thing they don’t want to see is themselves. Escapism, binging Netflix, video games, bad novels and worse politics can only do so much. They’ve been told that the end is near. Global warming will wipe out the environment. And it’s no loss because we’re all a bunch of racists.
Good riddance.
You can’t tell people that they’re a plague on the world, that they want all the wrong things and that the world would be a better place without them and not expect them to act on it.
Young women are more vulnerable because they’ve been hollowed out by feminism. All the programs that were meant to build up their self-esteem have instead destroyed it. They are told that life offers them nothing except the opportunity to be the best men they can be. Is it any wonder that they spend thousands of dollars destroying the girl looking back at them?
What some used to do with drugs and alcohol is now being performed with exotic surgeries, but the end result is still the same. Feminism has won its ultimate victory over those women.
The transgender movement is not a backlash to feminism, it’s a consequence.
There are many important things here to discuss, but tragically sad to contemplate nevertheless. Yes, this blotting out of existence might be the last stop that feminism has provided for women, but society has already posited as desirable the blotting out of existence for men. Without men women cannot exist. Without women men cannot exist.
There are many possible reasons for young people acting this way but let’s not ignore the Werther effect. That said, here is one reason that a few girls want to erase themselves and become something other than what they are.
Might we consider the number of girls who have been sexually assaulted, whether within the biological family, within the “blended” family, by that nice boy next door, by Mr. Jones the kindly counselor, or even out on the street by some creepy stranger, before they reach adolescence? Without men, and most importantly without any concept of chivalry which posits that a man’s duty is to protect women and girls and which had to be destroyed before any of this could happen, there is nobody to defend them. So the girl must die and become reborn as a man, who can defend himself. Even the lucky girl who has only been catcalled, had her purse searched by the boys at school looking for some embarrassing feminine product, been followed by boys shouting insults, and so forth probably wishes, for a few intensely embarrassing minutes, that she could be someone quite else than what she was “assigned at birth”.

The author is on point with his commentary. I also agree with your statement that women want to have careers because they can’t depend on men. This is exactly what my mother taught me because she, as well as her children, couldn’t depend on her husband/children’s father. Women just don’t want to be left high and dry with a house full of children and no means of support or education.
…and you are so far off the mark as to be in a different universe. Since time immemorial girls and women have had to deal with misbehaving men. In the far, far distant past (like about 30 or 40 years ago!), most of us learned to be strong enough to successfully navigate the occasional ugliness that is, like it or not, just a part of life. We had a guest speaker at our class at the University of Wisconsin in the mid 70’s. She was the assistant to the UW System President. She came to talk about women in the workplace. In professional occupations. Without thinking I asked: “What about the children at home?” This came from my unfortunate experience of having a mother abandoning the home for her career. I’d come home in 3rd grade and her bed was gone. So there was alota trauma inside me. The class heckled and harrasssed me for my question. I walked out.
Well, I truly admire women in the professions. I just don’t get the part where we let some social : political influencers reject the idea that the complete family is important. If someone is a mother and drifts away from being the family’s mother – well that’s a problem for me.
Ditto for fathers who walk away, leaving a woman to try to provide all that children need.
It is, but don’t tell my mother this. She’s all for transgenders. Not much for gay men, but she could never be called male supportive in any manner. The day her husband died was the court date set for her divorce. It’s an female thing for her, and I have no doubt that she is quite unaware of the psychology discussion could conducted with her over these choice details of what she supports. But yes – feminism is the root from which the vileness that is transgenderism comes. It destroys meaning, but let’s not let that get in way with ‘feelings’. Only some feelings matter.
But, don’t say that as most feminists are unable (and unwilling) to see how they will be pushed down. To understand it requires a mind that can clearly reflect and think. Well said, Daniel. My only comment here is that biology is mostly overlooked in these gender and identity discussions. The influence of genes in determining sex, gender, identity, etc is complex, and research is hindered by various interest groups and communities, to the point of intimidation and sanction, personal and professional.
I do have to say that I don’t know anybody who would willingly choose to be “Trans”, given the difficult life they face. Just sayin’.

in the late ’70’s, at work, I tried to ask a secretary a question. She ignored me, so I tapped her shoulder. She screamed “Don’t touch me!” and reported me to HR. Her complaint was properly ignored. I noticed how more and more boys became terrified of the social repercussions of just talking to a girl, let alone asking her out for a date. That foreshadowed the rise of the homosexuality “fad” and possibly, the rise in sexual violence, often against women. (As an aside, much of this is fomented by Maxtist-inspired Democrats intent on destroying the American Way of Life in order to build their totalitarian nightmare world upon the rubble.) My means of fighting back is to help less strong people — AKA “women” – protect themselves with a hidden knife, I buy good quality spring-action knives and give them away with basic self-defense instructions. My daughters have been beneficiaries and used them for defense. When I seek to buy more, several sellers — men, generally — provide discounts when they learn the reason for my purchase.

Actually Feminism did have dark roots:

Were the 50s really a giant step backward for Women? It was always depressing to hear that.
There is so much truth in this article, and it’s all very tragic – for both women and men.
However, I always bristle at writers qualifying “feminism” as a destructive force. Feminists in the 1920s (fighting for the right to vote), feminists in the 60s (fighting for equal opportunities and incomes for doing the exact same job), and feminists in the 80s (seeking equal access to more senior positions for which they were qualified) bear NO resemblance to the “feminists” of today (wearing a vagina hat and screeching about how men are all sex-crazed monsters). Unfortunately, the term has been hijacked to represent a dystopia that is going down a very dark and destructive slope. I fear that re-establishing common sense will become impossible.
The radicals have been hijacking the terminology to great success for some time. We non-radicals have done a poor job of pushing back against this tactic by often adopting the terms they wish to redefine.. I posit this success is partly a direct consequence of the poor state of public education. Instead of a concrete foundation for the use of words they are now “fluid”. You are right, it is destructive (Tower of Babel) and can only lead to the ruination of a coherent society. As a woman who came of age in the 70s, I was grateful to the women that came before me, ensuring my right to vote and have choices for an interesting career and life. But over the years, I came to realize the damage these women did to us, especially as I’ve found myself compelled to defend the men in my life – my husband, my father, my brother, my son and other very kind and decent men.
We have a great-niece that decided a few years ago, in middle school, that she’s really a boy. Dressed the part and tried to speak with a deeper voice, with hopes of puberty blockers and so forth. She did not do well in school, to the point that her mother stated she would not be returning to that school this past spring. Suddenly, out of the blue, she’s become a girl again. Why? Her teachers and friends all encouraged her dystopia, and she didn’t feel she could back down. Once she would not see these same people again, though, she’s been able to return to her true self. Puberty is bad enough without society confusing this further. It’s a freaking fad.
My impression is that the desire to destroy the concept of women and men is that these terms are in the Bible, most of human ethics over history has made morals and laws on the distinction. By destroying these distinctions, the moral codes of the world are extinguished and the slate is wiped clean for Marxist, postmodern, woke ideologies to make new rules.
After the French revolution they tore down monasteries and looted and defaced churches. Likewise in the Reformation. Muslim conquerors usually destroyed the religious institutions and values, culture, languages and libraries of conquered countries. Communists do this, the colonial conquerors of the New World destroyed priceless art and documents of native cultures. This is how we get the clean slate to write a new value system.
I would guess this is why the trans-feminists or whatever they call themselves, the cultural Marxists, etc. are doing this. But perhaps there is some better explanation that I have not heard of.

Truly today’s most important discussion is: What is misogyny? and what is Misandry? Many know the former, very few know the ladder.
It’s no coincidence that all this supposed gender confusion is happening when people are turning their backs on their Creator. Genesis 5:2 tells us that: “He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them mankind in the day they were created”. Once upon a time, that simplicity of how the world is ordered was evident to all and accepted the way we accept the sun rising in the morning and then setting in the evening.
